I appreciated your review, Tim, even if, thanks to its "scrambled" nature it took a couple of reads to penetrate your message. Although I think more highly of the film than you do (see my extended comments here at ANN), you have made me re-assess some things that I had put at the back of my mind in my enthusiasm for it.
The main issue is how the film treats rape. Is it there as entertainment or is it being seriously examined? On the evidence of the first film alone, its examination is perfunctory (gak, that's the second time I've used the word today on these forums) and, given the orgy of violence concluding the film, it seems that the treatment of the issue may not get any more sophisticated than some glib lines from Oefcoque and Balot. In my own comments I noted how the fanservice undermined any feminist message being made. Having said that, the series has two more instalments to go so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt at this stage. I initially rated the film as excellent but, if these concerns aren't addressed, I may reconsider the rating. I'm also pissed off at the lack of content for the price I paid. Anyway, thanks for making me think. |

Now that's a reply, and not just because I was terrified I might inspire some rage responses.
I'm certainly pleased you got something out of the review, and equally glad you seem to see my concern. In general, I try to keep moralising out of reviews, but the way in which MS used some pretty horrendous abuse as a catalyst for transforming into a 'kickarse' (and slightly unstable) gunslinger girl outing was just... urgh. You made an interesting note about the 'licking the dagger' moment in your own write-up on the forums, too. Unstable and violent outbursts/behaviours would be perfectly in-line here, a way of using the extreme violence to build, contextualise and even properly examine what must be going on inside of Balot's head. Perhaps this was what was being aimed for. However, the end result was largely in-line with the anime character-mold of a super creep who murders for fun; much more random Ninja Scroll villain than La Femme Nikita. |
