A couple of things about musical acts and convention from what I know. Before it became a trend or a fad, the conventions that starting doing bands just wanted to add something new and interesting to their event. There was no conspiracy to drain the wallets of jrock fangirls, con organizers just thought it would be a fun new thing for the con goers. Who doesn't enjoy a good rock concert?
Now on the misconception that musical acts are chosen over Japanese industry guests. First off, on some occasion, the record label will pay for the band coming out so there's no extra cost to the con. Another thing is that sometimes the lack of Japanese guests happens for other reasons than a band. It requires a lot of work to get contacts in Japan, work out details, do formal contracts and other forms of Japanese formalities. And then things like scheduling conflicts and personal emergencies can sabotage those plans.
And honestly the negative view of bands seems to be a bit narrow minded. Just because it's not your thing doesn't means it's bad. It wouldn't hurt to give it a try, you might even like it, but even if you don't most cons have plenty of things to do other than bands to entertain a person. There are plenty of fans that enjoy anime and enjoy Japanese music and that's okay. I remember when I was young I would put up my tape recorder up to the TV and record the music from such shows like Fist of the North Star and Bubblegum Crisis (the original).
BTW off topic but did you know it's A-Kon 20th year this year. It's the oldest running Anime con in the US and the first one to hit 20.

Which is why I think that the best Japanese guests for a con are musical guests. Only wish I realized that when my beloved Yuki Kajiura was a guest at Anime Expo the year that I went, but I didn't make it to her concert *kicks self until the day I die* for missing it

While the storied franchise has finally taken flight around the world, this shoot ’em up seems to be drifting out of formation.― During Otakon back in 2023, I narrowly missed my opportunity to play an early build of Macross -Shooting Insight-. Wilds is a solid evolution of the franchise, and while its innovations don’t change too much of the core experience, sometimes it's fine to just get a bigger version of what’s come before.― For a long time, Monster Hunter was one of those franchises that looked cool, but felt a bit too intimidating for me to actually get into. I dipped my toes into Monster Hunter Tri on the Wii back in the day, but ...

The plot hasn’t developed in any particularly interesting ways, to the point it’s hard to write anything positive about the show.― The Bakumatsu period, the final years of the Edo period, was an era of great social change and should be a fertile choice to set a historical drama. The mid-1800s brought an end to the Tokugawa Shogunate, a mode of government that had persisted over 250 years, while also...
I think there are a lot of anime fans—a lot of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure fans, in particular—who would love Kinnikuman if they only gave it a try.― A few months ago, when FLOW was on their world tour, I went to one of the shows. At one point, after having played several familiar hits, the band asked excitedly, “WHO HERE LIKES KINNIKUMAN!!” For the uninitiated, FLOW did the opening song to this first ...
