I guess I'm a bit confused as to why they held the event. It certainly sounds like the promoters understood it would ultimately be a money-looser. Am I missing something?

In the end it was designed as a community-builder + "We're one of the big boys now" show off publicity stunt.
Since it's not intended to be an annual thing or anything I can see it as being a useful stunt.

The Nico Nico Video player needs to be able to go full screen. Also the site seems in need of work.
pulled anime from the site did not help.

Ah, sorry. The way that news story was worded made me believe that there was actually some understanding that they would have made some money off of it. Let it suffice to say that I would have loved to go!
