I remember watching an anime cartoon series in 1973 called Casshan the Robot Hunter. Now 31 years later it's been updated to a live action movie called Casshern. http://www.casshern.com

I am anxiously awaiting it's release as are my friends. It's weird looking at this new remake now at age 36 but it's nice to know that people in Japan haven't abandoned the great shows of their past. I encourage all of you to get this movie when it comes out.

There's an English part of the website...Does that mean there is a chance of an American release?

Never heard of it, but it looks pretty cool. There's enough of a market for Japanese live action films over here that it could get released on DVD Stateside.

YesAsia.com says that the DVD will contain English subtitles, and normally, they don't lie.

id say same chance as a snowball in hell

R2 DVDs rarely have subtitles. heck, the only one i know to have subs is FLCL, but thats anime. but you never know unless you can read kanji, look at the site, on the DVD info page, first comes the length, then the 3 audio tracks available(DD:EX 6.1, DTS:ES 6.1, Director's Commentary DD 2.0), and then we have something else, 1 and 2, but what are they? might be info on the subs, but thats most likely either director's commentary, story board, or just plain Japanese

Yes it will have English subtitles. cdJapan has it listed with them, even going so far as to add a big "English Subtitles" in the name listing.

YesAsia actually has a large selection of Japanese R2 DVDs with English Subs.

Crap, there's a DVD/Kubrick set and they aren't selling it. Confused

I first saw Casshern at the Helsinki Film Festival about two months ago. This one of those films that you love or hate. Casshern is pretty much a mixed bag of almost every possible post apocalyptic vision you can think of. Plot is nice but there are holes in many places which left the viewer wondering what had happened. The film has good characters but they aren't, apart from a few exceptions, developed properly. What Casshern lacks in plot and characters, it takes back in visualilty and vision. Once the movie starts rolling, it rolls right over you Wink, with style. Haven't seen the Casshern anime so I can't really compare the live action movie and the anime serie.

Since I liked Casshern a lot, I bought the japanese R2-release of the movie. And yes, it has english subtitles.

As a fan of Tatsunoko's visor wearing super heroes. (Gatchaman,Hurricane Polymar,Tekkaman and Casshan) obtaining this DVD is a must. iv'e seen the trailers a few months ago, and i was left with the impression that "Cashern"may be the best thing in Japanese live action/sci-fi next to Battle Royal.

At least the production isn't sh*tty like that 8-man movie. (anyone remember that turd? Macek even had the voice actors from the Anime dubbing the Movie.Bwahahahahahahaha!! Twisted Evil Laughing )

Hopefully i'll live to see a live action adaptation of Gatchaman.
Now that would be "off da charts"! Wink

from the GITS2 message board:
Quote:
DreamWorks Pictures has taken domestic distribution rights to the Japanese feature Casshern, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Based on a 1970s animation series, the live-action feature follows a young man reborn as a bioengineered being who becomes involved in a bitter struggle between humankind and androids.

Japan's Shochiku released the film, directed by Kazuaki Kiriya, in April in its home country.

If you haven't heard of this you should...it's amazing. Here's a short description.

Set in a retro-futuristic alternate world where the entire planet is divided between two opposing alliances, "Casshern" is at once visually entertaining and dramatically profound. The earth is left diseased and polluted through a "great war." The geneticist Dr. Azuma vies for support from the government for his "neo-cell" treatment which can rejuvenate the body and regenerate humankind. His appeals for funding is turned down by the government leaders who fear that the new technology will threaten their entrenched powers. Driven to complete his work by a desire to save the life of his beloved wife, Dr. Azuma accepts an offer from a sinister militaristic faction. However, Azuma's "neo-cell" cloning experiment goes haywire after an accident, and a race of mutant humans (quasi-androids) is unleashed upon the world. Tetsuya, Azuma's son, volunteers to be reborn as the bionic warrior Casshern in an attempt to save the world, and to clear the name of his father. Casshern valiantly sacrifices his own humanity in order to attain the powers needed to defeat mankind's powerful enemies. Haunted by the memories of his slain mother and having to deal with the super robot that has absorbed his father's consciousness, Casshern must put aside his own emotions in a desperate bid to save the human race.

I think the film does more justice to the original than that dreadful 90's remake anime.

Grenadier's "The following program has been brought to you by" includes what appears to be some sort of ad for Casshern.
