Quote: | Let us hope that this volume, the exact middle of the series, is simply a bump in the road and needed set up for where Unita is going next, because it would be a shame to see so charming and thoughtful a series jump the proverbial shark. |
Lol.

So, does this reviewer not know about the controversy and discontent regarding the second half of this series? I know and I haven't' even read it, only seen the anime which doesn't touch the second half.
Speaking of which, since I haven't read it, I have a question; do we ever learn more about Reina's mother (her name escapes me) and how she's dealing with hating all her in-laws?

Yeah, I heard this was where it started going downhill.
It was interesting watching Daikichi and Rin develop. Skipping from prepubescence to older teenager leaves out a chunk of time that would have been nice to explore. I'm okay with more focus on Rin, but I always felt that the series' focus should be on her and Daikichi--not on Rin's romantic life. Particularly if it's littered with tropes and the usual issues. (It also doesn't help that I just don't read romance or anything with a heavy romantic influence.)
I'm just keeping the first 4 volumes, personally. I don't feel the need to have the others.

I was considering reading the series, but the artwork really could be better. It is almost enough for me to call "bad." It's a shame.
Also I think that the whole "she's not actually related to him" thing is a very stupid, generic twist. Really, if you're going to do a twist and make the characters have a relationship (that in this case would really unsettle the reader) you may as well just do it all the way. It's fiction. That or keep it a nice cute story about raising a kid that everybody came to love.
As though this really needed to be in a spoiler; it is impossible to avoid knowing that unless you stay clear of anything with the title even mentioned.

This is one of the few times where "not being related is still not okay even in my books" A step brother or sister or even a 1st-3rd cousin "still blood related" you can sly by me depending on how it's handled like in canvas two, dacapo or aki-sora... you just don't pull a Woody Allen of all things "look it up if you don't know the term"

Only because people are apparently constitutionally incapable of NOT spoiling it.
I got spoiled for this on /u/. /u/! Why the hell was anyone talking about Usagi Drop on /u/!?

People seem to be almost as bad at saying things about Usagi Drop's ending as people are/were with a certain event in Madoka Magica.
And avoiding Usagi Drop threads isn't 100% protection. I got spoiled because some asshat decided to say what the ending was in a thread about a completely different show, and Usagi Drop had not been mentioned at all in the thread before that post. He suddenly used it as a comparison and then didn't tag it.
To top it off, he basically told someone else who was upset about being spoiled on it that they were stupid for getting upset about it, because it was "obvious" that it was coming.

Oh, wow. This is honestly hilarious: just earlier this Saturday or Friday, I was randomly wondering-- as one that hasn't been following Usagi Drop or its American release schedule (though as one that knows the gist of the ending)-- when ANN was going to get to reviewing the latter volumes of Usagi Drop and what the reaction would be. Kinda surprised to see the apparently "downward" slide occur so soon after the time skip.

Believe me, I know. I try not to mention it in my reviews, although my opening lines belie that this time, but mostly I went into this volume hoping that the issues that, as Fencedude mentioned, people seem unable to keep bringing up would not start until closer to the end of the series.

I bought the first 4 volumes of the manga, I'm content to stop there.

^Same here. The first four were very good and ended in a decent place, so I am not bothered with just pretending it ended there, as would normally bother my urge to complete everything.

I did a speed-read of this volume, and yes, you do.

Foreshadowing for the conclusion happened long before the timeskip. Why adopt someone since their name just will change once they get married? Surprising what happened in the end based on those words, not that I was surprised or anything; I read the series based on reviews of the show from this site but before the ending was done. It's nice to see reviews for the manga are a bit more attentative to details rather than "Oh, it's so cute!!".
I also love the fact that while Daikiche's grandfather was ruled out as Rin's father, there's still the whole physical resemblance and the fact that the old man treated her as part of the family. So, I kind of think the suspect was Daikichi's uncle. You know, the one who didn't want Rin anywhere near the family. Still, I love the way the whole idea that Rin had a father in the first place was just dropped in favor of the automatic "teenage girl in love conquers all resistant" ending. It resolved everything so neatly.

I figure that even if you know how it ends you don't know exactly why it happens that way, so expressing hope that it becomes a more "thoughtful" story is still a very valid observation. In fact it better be a VERY thoughtful story in order to resolve anywhere near satisfactorily.

Some people call it "spoiling", others "saving".
