I think it's ridiculous that such an awesome anime doesn't even have a proper blu-ray release here. Imagine how amazing HD Taiga would look. Maybe if we get enough attention NISA will take notice and think about it.

Simple: NIS America didn't have the license for it, probably because (I imagine) it would have been considerably more expensive.

The BD box set didn't even exist, so it's not like they had a choice. The same thing happened with Wagnaria. They licensed Toradora February 2010, but the BD box set wasn't announced until early August 2011. They probably would've gotten it since they tend to get those rights for shows that have JP BDs, but NISA might not be too into the whole "re-release with a BD"-thing like Sentai, Funimation, or Media Blasters are.

I have no doubts that Toradora will get a Blu-ray release in North America.... eventually. For now we must wait, but It's too popular not to.

I'm not complaining. I am if anything hopeful that the longer it takes the more likely they might consider dubbing it this time, or at least this is what I tell myself.
And I just like dubs even if I also liked the original, I know plenty of people don't understand why since one can hardly be unhappy with the original VAs here. But the same was true of Spice and Wolf and I was quite happy with how Funimation did there. |

it's not like it ever needed one, but if they ever do... the story of Taiga & Ryuji, and Kitamura & Kano is something I enjoyed enough that I'd show my support by buying it again.

Why would one need a romcom in high definition in the first place though? I could understand some other genre that would benefit from it like action, science fiction, or fantasy, but I don't get the appeal of high definition talking heads for 600 minutes.

Why does HD ever appeal to people? Because the lines are cleaner, it's more attractive to look at, etc. If you like the character designs they are closer to what was intended rather than being fuzzy/etc.
It's like saying that people shouldn't look for high resolution pictures or desktop wallpaper because "it's just a still image." |

Toradora is an upscale from a SD source so it's not going to be as clean as something that was originally done in psudeo-HD/HD (720 or 540p). But, one thing that's nice about blu-ray is not only things look cleaner and sharper, but the video codec used (h.264) is superior to the MPEG-2 used on DVDs. Setting aside the fact that you can throw more bitrate at a video compressed on a blu-ray, it's just better codec at compressing video. |

Just pointing out that the video codec used for a BD is superior to the one used on DVDs. If the upscale is not shitty, then it's better to take the upscaled BD than the DVD in terms of video quality. |

Another problem, as elaborated by Clarine Harp of Funimation production fame, is that the Japanese companies are reluctant to let NA companies use the upscales they make, since the upscale/authoring process is a lot more expensive in Japan. Talk about a ripoff. So they'd rather give the NA companies the SD masters and let them do their own upscaling, which can be cost-prohibitive. Or NA companies might not even be allowed to release Blu-Ray at all, upscaled or not, because the JP companies fear reverse importation too much. Or even if JP companies will allow a NA BD release, the "cover our asses against reverse importation" extra BD licensing fees may be too much for the NA companies to afford. |
