I just wanted to applaud the staff of ANN for deciding not to remove the beautiful new logo just to satisfy the few whiney folks who complained about it. Honestly, I can't believe anyone who visits ANN regularly and is even remotely familiar with the nature of anime would have the slightest problem with it.

Why is this debate still going on? Rolling Eyes Everyone now has a choice to hide the boobs. I hope that what all I posted yesterday in the other thread wasn't perceived as complaining about the banner, because I was joking about stuff like drawing future contest entries naked.

Some of us (*gasp*) don't like fanservice, and get somewhat annoyed when it's thrown at us. Cope.

And thanks to the ANN staff for providing a solution.

I've got the cookie installed on my work computer and not on my home computer. Good enough for me.

I'm glad we managed to make people happy with the option.

But Nudity (or near nudity in this case) does not always equal fanservice.

Fanservice is the addition to a picture (or series of pictures) of something expected to be found sexually attractive to the viewers for the sole purpose of increasing interest in the image by pandering to the viewers basic sexual lust.

When an artist envisions a character as sexually attractive and choses to draw that character in a way that they feel to be beautiful for artistic reasons it isn't fanservice.

All true, but it's quite debatable (IMO) whether the "it's art" reasoning applies here. But I don't want to start up an argument when I came here to thank you guys, so I'll shut up now.

True, but in this case what was Valery Korneev going for?

Well I want to express thanks too.

Now at work I can set it to just show her head and at home I can see the whole banner in all its skin bearing glory. Kudos to the staff for accomodating for the people who need to keep a clean looking screen display while inhabiting our capitalist cubicle prisons and still leaving people the freedom to stare at cartoon elf cleavage while they are in the privacy of their home if they so choose (and I sure do choose)! I think everyone should be happy now.

At least I am... I'm as happy as a blonde elf in a slutty santa outfit in december.

Peace all and happy holidays!

I think I'll start with giving a warning that this is a rant on my overall opinion towards censorship of the human body. If you've got a comment, make it a constructive one as I'm trying to do:

The human body happens to be an absolutely BEAUTIFUL thing. Art is a fantastic way to express that. We will ALL manage to view a naked male and female body in our lifetime WITHOUT the help of art or any other abundant social environment. So to sum it up? Some humans are complete idiots for making one of the most natural and amazing things TABOO. Who's idea was THAT? 9_9

I think not only is the current logo not *remotely* offensive, but even if it was...this is an ANIME (=ART) site. If your workplace has a problem with such things, then why are you surfing the net during office hours anyway? Can't you wait to get home?

I agree that the artwork itself is good with or without the cleavage. I agree that the personality of Jadress is definately flirty enough to warrent such an outfit (my own piece was flirty and so were some of the the others). I liked this piece art-wise, though it was not my personal favorite (for artist reasons). If Jad had happened to have been a MALE mascot, I bet money "fanservice" would be used just as liberally.

I'm sorry to those of you that find it offensive, but I'm just as surprised at this whole conversation as the Admins were.

/end rant

Actually, this is a news site, not an art site. I read this site just like I read Cinescape and Anime on DVD and MSNBC all while at work. However, none of the above mentioned sites put nakedness on their site. (Especially not on the front page!)

If this were an art site, then it should have more art and less news. There's a difference. This site frequently gets press releases from companies. There are some companies that wish to keep their "family friendly" reputation and may not approve of the banner, therefore cutting their ties with ANN. (I'm not saying that would definitely happen but it's a possible side-effect.)

And I definitely do not think the naked human body is amazing. Especially since a majority of the human race is disgustingly overweight.

As for the fanservice thing? I'd bet money that if the mascot were male, there would be little to no fanservice.

Nudity an offense? By Zeus, what a display of utter hypocrisy and idiocy!

I was born, have grown up and live in a country where topless sunbathing of women is perfectly legal and is not considered as "suggestive" or an "invitation" or what have you. And even nudism on the more deserted beaches has never been considered by my country's society as an insult to anyone or anything.

Which means that, yes, I have seen women topless on the beach and by the pool and on the hotel lawn, I have seen women nude and have no problem with that at all.

Besides, nude IS indeed part of the arts; has anyone in their sane minds felt offended by Praxiteles' Hermes or the statues of Aphrodite? These are nude statues I'm talking about, mind you. In my book, whoever gets worked up about some cleavage is a prude and a hypocrite.

And indeed, hypocrisy it is: We admire nude, newborn babies for their innocence and purity, yet, we grow up learning to be ashamed of ourselves, our bodies and the view of our bodies! We are taught that revealing outfits and nudity are sins. I do not wish to enter a religious discussion, however enlightening it would be as to how this idiotic puritanism began, so I am not going to.

But, for the record, I do not mind the mascot's cleavage at all. And I agree with Mirana that, if the mascot was some muscular male figure, no one would feel "insulted".

We need no more clones of Mary Whitehouse (famous and ridiculous '70s ultra-conservative anti-porn campaigner).

Speaking of which, I remembered the relevant lyrics from Pink Floyd's "Pigs (Three Different Ones)":

Hey you Whitehouse, ha ha, charade you are
You house proud town mouse, ha ha, charade you are
You're trying to keep your feelings off the street
You're nearly a real treat
All tight lips and cold feet
And do you feel abused?
...!...!...!
You gotta stem the evil tide
And keep it all on the inside
Mary you're nearly a treat
Mary you're nearly a treat
But you're really a cry.

EDIT: I misquoted Cassandra where I should say "Mirana".

- This is a news site ABOUT ART. I think that speaks for itself, but maybe it's just me....?
- The only "family friendly" (In standard "american" terms) anime company I recall is Disney and I don't think they pay too much attention to ANN (If you can think of another, feel free to bring it up).
- When was the last time YOU created something that functioned like the human body? Overweight or not. And on that note...I seem to remember all the classical/ancient nudes in art being what we would drastically call "overweight" today.
