I hate Suncoast. A few years ago I bought BGC 2040 from a stall at the San Diego Comic Con--they said the tapes were new--and when I got home and tried to play them I found out they were all ex-rentals repackaged that were completely warped (no sound, pic, etc.). I called their main office and they said they couldn't track down which branch store had a stall at the con, so I couldn't return them. I even talked to a local Suncoast employee about it, and he was like, "Don't buy anything at cons!" So it was a big disappointment to me and I won't buy from there again.

Suncoast doesn't rent tapes (DVDs...whatever). Are you sure it was a Suncoast stall?

Yeah, it was absolutely Suncoast--they had their own huge stall. I've never seen a Suncoast do rentals either--it was weird because the packaging on the tapes/boxes looked pristine new, but the tapes inside didn't--and it wasn't like they all had the same exact warp factor. The tapes were all different levels of warped (but unwatchable warped) like when a rental tape should have been retired about 100 playings previously. I don't know how it happened, all I know is that it was Suncoast and it sucked for me. :`(

Yesterday I went to Suncoast.com to look up the next Triple Point Weekend dates, and discovered that their site now has a huge "Anime" tab at the top of the page, next to and completely seperate from the more general "Movies" tab.

Then today, I get home and check my mail to discover that Suncoast has e-mailed its Replay members a list of upcoming anime cons.

So I'm wondering... Has ANN done any kind of features on and/or interviews with Suncoast yet? If not, maybe its about time. They're certainly one of the biggest anime retailers out there, and with all they've done for anime fans over the years (huge stock, tons of reviews in Request magazine, Pocky displays, mini poster giveaways, distribution deals with the major periodical and manga publishers, various other displays and promotions etc...) I should think there has to be SOMEONE near the top of their corporate ladder who favors anime and manga for one reason or another; and should have something interesting or inciteful to say about it. Even to explain why Suncoast is so dedicated to anime, would be interesting to hear.

Yes indeed, I think I'd really like that.

I've noticed that places like Babbages have also got an anime section plus a spinny rack of manga titles. A year ago I didn't remember them having that much stuff. hmmmmm.... interesting.....

It's about the $. Many video stores like Fye started to put more and more anime on their shelfs because it's the current rave. I can still remember when Waldenbooks and B&N had very little manga and now they have shelfs of it. But, it is good to see Suncoast get in the spirt and hit the Cons.

I usually go to Suncoast to browse. First I look through the anime titles then I browse the manga section. I usually buy my anime at Best Buy or online.

I actually do usually buy from Suncoast (at the moment, online retailers aren't an option for me), I would go to Best Buy, but being in the store actually makes me physically ill. It's a strange and markedly unpleasant experience that I avoid vigorously.

I will usually by my anime and manga at the local anime shops. One of the shops price their DVDs with a 10% discount and the other store will give me a 10% discount because I am a regular shopper there. From time to time, I will by an anime or two at Media Play because it is usually 2-3 dollars cheaper than Suncoast. To tell the truth, I have never been to Best Buy for anime. I may have to check it out sometime.

I couldn't agree more because (in old voice) back in the day, Suncoast was one of the VERY few places that you could find any anime.

While I don't want to burn any bridges...
... wouldn't that kinda be the same as doing a lawn care interview on Wal-Mart? :)

LOL Laughing

I don't see a point in doing interviews w/ retailers. Where's the journalistic angle for ANN?

I actually see a legitimate reason for doing an article about how come Suncoast picked up anime so early. It certainly wasn't the money at first because Suncoast was selling anime before it became as popular as it is now. It is not like interviewing Wal-Mart about why they carry lawncare products because everyone has a good idea why they do.

Indeed, so they may be the armory of light in the war against the dark gnomes of the grass.

More legitimately (I almost hate to not leave what proceeds to standing alone), I think such an interview may be of interest. Whereas Wal-Mart carrying lawn-care products (and many others, but we've latched on to that example) is a practical decision, Suncoast carrying anime is different. They had anime before it was sure that it could be profitable. I'd like to see what led to that decision. I'd also like to see if they'll give a hint of ever lowering their prices a bit (but I don't mind much, especially since I usually buy the week of a release and save $5).

And don't forget the fact that their dedication to the medium has remained strong ever since. In many places, my home town included, they keep by and far the best selection of anime and anime-related goods in stock; and they're always catering to the anime crowd, with things like the recent Pocky & Japanese Snacks promotion and the summer convention schedule they recently sent out to their Replay e-mail users.

I'm not nearly as much of a fan of theirs as I used to be. Now that I have my own credit card, I'm planning on doing all of my anime shopping online once my Replay membership expires, in order to make the most of my money...

...But even so, I still have a certain amount of respect for them, and I would be interested to know why they have shown so much dedication to anime and the anime community.

And it would be an interesting change from all of the voice actor and production staff interviews that people have been doing in recent months, at the very least. (IMO) I don't know about anyone else, but I'm so sick of those that I don't even skim those anymore - even the ones posted here. Confused

Bad man. I did buy one set of HK's and that was Kenshin a while ago. I regret it and got rid of it. The boot leggers are the worst scum. Do kazaa rather than bootleggers. I know its easy to go, ohhh all of Ranma, Kenshin/DBZ for only eigthy!. (Especially Kenshin, it was 800 for the series not long ago). If you are gonna buy, go to Roberts anime store. They have low mark up, and good shiping. They do R2 as well, so you can buy R2 GITS with English subs or Battle Royale. No subs on that, I might import one from Britain.
