Was anybody going to tell me that Natori and Matoba were friends in high school, or was I supposed to find out by watching the show?

I think "friends" is overstating it, but yes, we've known they were acquainted in high school since "A World Unbent," S5/E8. Natori met Matoba at a meeting of exorcists, and later sort of helped Matoba (well, failed to help, really) exorcise a youkai that was targeting exorcists. Remember the mansion with the kimono of many colors on the tree branch?

Also, Matoba is younger than Natori, which makes them becoming friends at that age even less likely. Smile

Yes, series 5, Ep8 adapted Special 15 (vol17 manga), Natori and Matoba's first meeting as teens, as Gina Szanboti described.

Defintely NOT high school pals.

Special 17 (vol21 of manga, NOT adapted to anime (yet)) have 2nd story with Natori and Matoba as teens wherein the divide (paths they are on, point of view regarding ayakashi/youkai) becomes much more set, put them at odds (and not pals).

Natori definitely desn't want any harm to come to Natsume, and the protection level up since Natsume fully explained the Book of Friends to Natori, something Matoba should never learn about.

I really love this show. So far episode 5 of Season 7 is my favorite. The episodes where he deepens his bond with his friends both human and yokai are always the best!

Episode 11 was my favorite episode of the season! It was so good to see Reiko again. Her and Soko’s friendship dissolving over a lack of communication was so heartbreaking. The field of flowers was breathtaking. I was tearing up with Takashi at the end.

I wish this show would run every week for the next few years!

Since this seemed to take place in the same forest, and Natsume wanted to show the flowers to Sensei, I'm surprised he didn't ask the youkai to show him where it was. Anyway, I'm glad the last contest didn't involve Reiko deliberately throwing the match.

It's interesting that so many of these stories involve unrewarded waiting and/or miscommunication.

I seriously had to check the episode count because I thought this was the last episode. I can't believe after waiting 7 years, the series ends next week. I'm sure there will be a season 8 at some point since this series consistently does well regardless of how much time has passed, but it's going to be another excruciating wait.

Already got all the blu-rays preordered.

Since Lauren got to be a fujoshi, I'll be a himejoshi and say: doomed yuri...right in my heart...

I'm curious about the mentioned "unrequited affection". Was that referring to Souko? Not only does the yokai say Souko loved her straight out, so softening it to affection seems unnecessary, even if you don't subscribe to my yuri, love can be platonic or romantic, so... But more importantly, it wasn't unrequited. The feelings were requited, but Reiko's heartbreak and decision to move on as quickly as possible, her surety that she'd been rejected again, means they missed each other.

Another interesting note: Natsume saw Reiko's dream because he was reading Soranome's memories. So Soranome WAS able to read Reiko's mind, just once. He likely lied about this out of respect for her privacy.

Anyway, a fantastic ep. Yuki Midorikawa breaks my heart again.

EDIT:

Reading past reviews more carefully, and It's so funny the Tuxedo Mask meme was mentioned in a previous review, bc I immediately did an edit of that same meme when I saw that part: https://ladyloveandjustice.tumblr.com/post/769856095215812608/ok-so-i-had-to Great minds think alike, I suppose.

I was wondering if I should mention the obvious opportunity for yuri in Reiko and Soko's relationship, but I was worried I was becoming too much of a fangirl after just discussing the potential Natori/Matoba ship over the last two reviews. But yes, yes, acknowledged and felt.

When I say "unrequited affection," I mean the way this pair never got to see each other again! Maybe that was the wrong term. It's clear they cared about each other, but Reiko didn't know that!

Missed connection, maybe? You're right, it is hard to come up with the term...mutual misunderstanding?

Google called it unreciprocated awareness. Unreciprocated awareness of mutual feelings...doesn't quite roll of the tongue but I guess that's accurate lmao. Thanks for responding! It's nice to know I wasn't the only one getting yuri vibes here. I've been enjoying the reviews!

So maybe Hinoe had reason to hope Reiko would return her affections someday? Wink

Was hoping Ep12 at VERY end would have (like in the past) Nyanko-sensei saying "Until next time/meet again". But alas no. However, Vol5 for S7 lists Ep13 (been up since October)
https://online.aniplex.co.jp/itempaGeHjvS05.html

AO OVA could be for Ep13 rather than adaptation of manga material

Natsume live event March 2, 2025 so HOPE a S8 announcement will get at this event (another 12 epsiodes will still leave plenty of manga material NOT covered)!!
