It's stated in the article: he was arrested and convicted for possession of Child Sexual Assault Material.

if not, the reverse.

I can't feel like having to pay $1,500 for a massive library and likely being a major distributor would make him feel too bad about it.

Not from the editorial department.

The episodes should still be available for ranking regardless, and if the series gets enough votes, it will appear in the Your Anime Ranking charts: animenewsnetwork.com/weekly-ranking/2024/summer/.216099

Bummer. I'd love to see ANN take on the new anime, even if begrudgingly so, as said by the site owner. You could take a couple of jabs at Watsuki while doing so. Win-win. Hehehehe.

tho i understand the desire to be disassociated with anything watsuki related. forgiveness is something hardly earned here after he got a slap on the wrist because of japan lax laws/views.

I asked what it was as the conviction part failed to load in on my screen

I wish Watsuki well and hope he recovers. Hopefully the 30th Anniversary tribute can cheer him up and shows he is loved.

I wish Watsuki a speedy recovery. Kenshin is one of my all time fave properties, and we've lost too many manga-ka due to health issues Crying or Very sad

I will never get over how one sassy tweet is responsible for nearly a decade's worth of misinformation.

For the record, at no point was it ever actually revealed he was being investigated for distribution. Just that he was found during a separate investigation. I don't think the details of that other investigation were ever revealed.

Anyway I hope he recovers, if for no other reason than because I want him to able to properly finish his manga. I have read too many manga forever unfinished due to illness and death I won't wish that fate on anybody.

The original report stated that he had so much material they assumed he must have been. They never investigated him as such because he simply said it was all his. That is a shocking and horrific amount of CSA material and does not make things better. Also a "decade"? You might want to double check on some timelines.

I wish Watsuki a speedy recovery. I'm sure all his mangaka friends and apprentices are doing something to lift his spirits. Come back at 110% so that RK doesn't get another hiatus so soon.

I kid you not, I did extensive research on this a few years back because I had never seen any of the original formal news articles and their sources report on that specificaly, and sure enough it isn't. They mention the police were tipped off during a separate investigation that had was in possession of illicit material, so they did a search, but that doesn't imply they thought distribution and that's the extent of what'sbeen reported. The idea comes from a tweet that says "The author, Nobuhiro Watsuki, is an actual p3dophile who got caught with so much cp they thought he was a distributor." From 2019.

That's the big start of it from what I've gathered. It's sensationalization getting picked up as real news.

I will say you are right about the decade thing though. For reason I thought the news broke out in 2014, but that wouldn't have even been possible since possession of CSEM didn't become illegal until 2015. This case broke out around 2017, so my bad.

I also just want to make clear I don't condone Watsuki's crime here one bit. Sensational news becoming treated as fact is simply a pet peeve of mine. Especially since being suspected of distribution is a highly serious allegation to make and if I was a fan, I would want others to stick to the truth since that's heartbreaking enough on it's own.
