toe is a math rock band that definitely deserves more attention. It's a cliché when talking about the band to note the drummer's skills. Their New Sentimentality EP is damn great. Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6I372o93U0
Shugo Tokumaru also sounds like what I had envisioned Animal Collection to be before I found out that they're just overproduced nonsense. Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbfLycuhhjI And if you have any interest in metal, noise rock or drone, then Boris is an easy suggestion. (Their band's name is derived from the Melvins' album and song of the same name, so their sound isn't a surprise.) The only albums that I could recommend for consistency are Flood, Feedbacker and Rainbow, though. Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1z0FGxWi7Q |

HellKorn: I love Toe, I still consider them to be my favorite math rock band. And I agree, they deserve allot more attention then they get. And i tend to like Boris, though sometimes I think they may try to hard, but usually they're a really good drone band.
As for Shugo Tokumaru, I really liked them. Thanks for posting that video I had never heard of them before. I really like their song. Though I have to say that I can't agree with your comment about Animal Collective. I think they're amazing, one of my favorite bands of all time actually. But that's just my opinion. |

Also, the collaboration by Ayuo Takahashi and Ohta Hiromi, Red Moon, is excellent. It's on John Zorn's Tzadik label, which tends to be a mixed bag (though regardless of my opinion of Zorn, I will always appreciate the label for getting Kayo Dot and Time of Orchids out onto the underground scene in a big way). |

I love these guys, I'm glad this was mentioned prior. It was like a "where have you been all my life" guys after getting a taste of them from Gungrave. They just have such a unique blend of rock/funk/jazz that just hits the spot for me. It's a shame they're so obscure though, I was lucky enough to track down most of their albums. |

Ah, Shugo Tokumaru! I fell in love with the song "Such a Color" like 5 years ago and just couldn't find any info about the artist in the usual J-pop haunts. Then one day I was paging through Theme magazine at work and stumbled across a full-page feature on the artist... who I then discovered was actually a man (he's got a lovely, lilting voice). I promptly bought his album Night Piece (released on a U.S. label, also unexpected) and was pretty disappointed to find out that the other songs were just kind of messy noise, imo, with lots of random audio samples and sadly, "Such a Color" was the best song there. But checking out what's he's got on YouTube now, perhaps I shall revisit his works.
