Oh, I'd forgotten that detail from the movie. So that's what that ding ding ding! Pelvic thrusting in the bar was about. I guess I never really did figure out what was going on.

I for one really love seeing the gang again in all their crazy glory, though I will admit that the long beaks between new seasons/a movie do not help in staying connected to the world. Not only do you forget past events but it can also make you less enthused about the series in general.

So I'm still glad to have the gang back as of episode 3, but I will admit that, for me anyhow, Konosuba has lost a bit of its zing. I'm enjoying the new episodes, but they feel more like OVA than a new season. That said, the bar was pretty damn high since Konosuba season 1 is one of my favorite anime ever in the history of ever. I've definitely seen worse sequel seasons, and if this is as good as it gets, I'll gladly keep watching just for that comfort food type experience.
Kazuma remains a scum bag, and the first ten minutes of him acting like an obnoxious house pet that gets coddled anyway was both amusing and irritating for me. The episode picked up when his party arrived to take him back. It's interesting seeing the contrast between Lalatina the noble and Darkness the adventurer.

On the Train to the End of the World thread Spastic Minnow commented that having all the characters screaming is a comedy killer. And it certainly can be, especially when the voice actors are trying to substitute volume for investing real emotion. But there are always exceptions...D-Frag! being one example. And Konosuba has always had lots of characters melting down simultaneously in ways that were hilarious, and it was obvious that the voice actors were top notch and enjoying themselves and riffing off each others' performances.. But for me - and it might just be that I've been in a weird mood while watching the show or something because the characters have been consistent and the boxes have all been checked and everything - this show didn't really recapture the magic of the first two seasons until yesterday. But yesterday felt like something fell back into a groove for me. It's a hard quality to pin down. .

I've been saying the same since the beginning of the season and after a review, I believe the problem is that until Ep4 the comedy pattern was to have the characters "bounce off" one another exclusively, which is a departure from the previous pattern of "setup and payoff" which is good comedy practice. Further, in the past, the character interaction has been made part of the setup and payoff so it was present but not alone. That's why it seems there was something missing or "off". Here's hoping this return to form continues because I had dropped it at Ep2.

Season 3, Episode 4
So, someone is needing to clean up their senpai's messes up.
I hadn't been as into the season as I might have hoped, but I think I had some return. One I think Kazuma bouncing off Megumin, her being a menace again. I think that I liked a quick gag of Aqua getting sloshed with the maids, sharing her depravity. And the gang unloading on Kazuma when he is tied up because he tried to cover for Chris.
Also had to think that we have had an extended Darkness needing to be the responsible one. Which feels a little a bit of a shame as her masochism is one of my favourite gags. At least one good gag outside of that norm when she was taking no shit in allowing the perverts to peep, sure she likes being humiliated but I don't think she has ever allowed it to be done to others.

Well, Ep5 continues the trend from last Ep of improved comedy and I couldn't be happier. Wonder if the first few episodes had a different script writer or director?

Season 3, Episode 6
I am going to say some great Darkness moments in the episode. It was a great needle drop that it looked like Kazuma and Chris's plan was going great, and then it is Darkness so they close the door. Not because she would be a physical threat, because she would miss, but chances if anyone would recognise Kazuma or Chris it would be Darkness. Which of course she does when she immediately sees them, and it is she who is now in an incredibly awkward situation of where her loyalty should lie and how much she would trust either of them.
Megumin though can't see through the disguise and is just awed by it, because of course she would, and Aqua is herself not the brightest and or too drunk. Darkness had a classic moment with enjoyed being bound, which has been rare so far. And as soon as Kazuma and Chris getting away, we cut to Darkness using her surprising strength to torture and force an answer out of them, which I kind of like this side of her. fair enough why they wouldn't tell her. But also that the Kazuma reason that it would have put her in a difficult situation to even know it was going to happen, which he was embarrassed about her hearing, clearly his lighter more caring side.
And then in the last act where Darkness tried to smooth things over without anything actually getting out about what Kazuma did, everything made Kazuma want to do something like show the ring that it was him. Just then funny for Kazuma really trying to do the sort of stupid thing the others usually get up to, and Darkness needing to be the reasonable one that Kazuma was in earlier arcs. It kind of tiptoed around whether Iris actually figured out it was Kazuma, but with her praising Chris put Kazuma off the trail, but the end kind of hinted that she did know, Kazuma did share stories with her.
I don't think it was before, but I think that Darkness might be my favourite character now in the series. My favourite was probably Megumin.

While I've enjoyed the series enough to keep watching when it gets another season, I've never really followed it closely or remember much of what even happened. So when did Kazuma get all these super powers? oO I remember him getting Steal which only seemed to net him panties, and I vaguely kinda remember Create Water, but Freeze and whatever electrocution thing he was doing to all the defenders I had no clue that he could do. I guess I should go read the wiki, but I probably don't care enough to do that.
Anyway, yeah, it was a fun episode. Darkness has really been shining these last few.

Kazuma's abilities have been a bunch of hodgepodge, or really the entire party are not typical for how they spend their points. Megumin just improving her one spell, Aqua spends most of hers to get party tricks, and I think there might have been something about Darkness mostly giving herself vitality to take damage.
Kazuma have been mostly odd abilities, which he thinks to use in odd ways, his stealth skill with steal having his class mostly be thief taught from Chris, with also a sniping skill. I remember his water skill was something he considered versatile that he could have free drinking water, and might have had something to do with Aqua having similar skills. I didn't remember Freeze, but then I recalled him teasing darkness at one point by doing it on the back of her neck, he must have thought it combos with water.
And I believe it was not electrocution he was doing but Drain Touch, a lich skill her learned from Wiz, which could get him in trouble if it was identified for where is learned it. He has previously used it taking away Megumin's mana, which accidentally made her not able to use Explosion, and had to reverse it to give her mana by taking from Aqua. He also tried using it on Darkness when they visited her place and were having a fight, and took a good bit of it.

Dusky pretty much nailed it. Plus, with Kazuma being the Adventurer class that's a dabbler in all trades and master of none, he could reasonably demonstrate any non-OP spell and chalk it up to a level up. I too have been noticing the more serious side of Darkness...or maybe more to the point, Lalatina, since it seems to be acting in her capacity as a noble that's bringing out this side of her more. It's starting to look like all of the gang have been stumbling ass backwards into being kind of formidable after all of their fights with demon generals.

That is the thing about Kazuma, he is a scumbag and lazy whenever he can be. It would be easy to see him as a weak adventurer because of his behavior and he technically is, he just uses his collection of minor seeming skills in extremely effective ways. There is a manga chapter that was not adapted in the earlier seasons and it shows how Kazuma can be crazy effective when in a party that is not a collection of weirdos.

Season 3, Episode 7
Okay, this was the good old Konosuba, although also especially cringey when Kazuma and Aqua are letting the money get to their heads and are clearly particular just idiots who don't know what they are talking about. Based on a lot of the stuff I keep getting terrified that they just going to end up losing all their money through stupidity of no financial skills. Aqua has already been tricked into buying what she thinks is a dragon egg but is likely a chicken, she is clearly someone they should give a very strict budget to. Things considered, I wonder if they should put Darkness in charge of their money, because even Kazuma seems unreliable. My perception of Vanir telling Kazuma to continue to come up with business opportunities feel like a warning that he might lose everything if he just gets complacent.
But also, I think that Darkness continue to be the best character of the season. We saw a bit of her return to character that she can let her guard down. Megumin was rather insistent that her putting ice on Darkness was just testing her endurance, but was most likely humiliation play for Darkness. Still very funny for Kazuma and Aqua's reactions. And also very funny when Vanir was trolling Darkness by having her spew her insecurities of wanting to look cute, and then revealing that it had nothing to do with the fortune reading he was going to give.
And then Darkness convincing Kazuma to do the hydra bounty. His sense of adventure would not work, promising a kiss on the cheek would not work for something that level, but the moment he realised that it was actually important to Darkness would have him give in.
