Book of Friends is one of the most consistent manga/anime. It’s nice that the quality hasn’t dropped after all these years.

It's very weird that after all these years the subs are now calling Nyanko-sensei "Master Kitty Cat." oO At any rate, it's good to have it back.

This series continues to be my all-time favorite. After booking the director and animation producer (currently CEO of Shuka) for FanimeCon back in 2013, I'm lucky to have a continued friendship with them. Every time a season ends, I ask Omori san when the next will be. He had been telling me to wait for the past 7 years for this 7th season!!!!
Absolutely worth the wait though. Mini sensei was absolutely adorable and the series has me feeling warm and fuzzy every Monday.

Quote: | the episode seems to hint heavily that Yorishima knew Reiko, and that's why Natsume seems familiar to him. How well did he know Reiko? Are we looking at Natsume's grandfather in the flesh? |
I would say no, since Natori directly asked him if he'd heard of Natsume Reiko and he said no. Since you said he was a reliable narrator, I don't know why you'd doubt him in this case. Not that he couldn't be unreliable here, I guess. Or that he knew her but not her name. Anyway, I still think not. I think what's familiar to him is the youkai energy bound up in the Book's names.

I hope we see more of Matoba and Tanuma soon. I rather like them both. This season is feeling a little flat for me. I hope they do at least one story over two or three episodes instead of ayakashi/yokai of the week all season.

Tbh, I don't think there's any proof that Yorishima is a reliable narrator. He could very well be lying about knowing Reiko. A possibility for him being Natsume's grandfather is that after being eaten by the yokai, he thought it was too dangerous to go back to her and now after she died probably thinking he abandoned her, he's consumed by guilt so he doesn't want to acknowledge the connection. Or the yokai possessing him could be messing with his memories, so maybe he legit doesn't remember Reiko. The fact he has Natsume's manga color scheme (in the manga Natsume has silver hair and green eyes) seems to be a point in the grandfather favor.
But he could very well be a red herring and not Natsume's grandfather at all. The yokai knowing Reiko while he doesn't could also make sense.

I'm hoping for the opposite. Episode 3 already fell flat for me because of the exorcist angle to it, the episodic youkai are always more fun for me

I don't know if you'll get that this season, but I do know that there have been several two, three, and even a couple five or six chapter long story arcs in the manga past the point where anything has been adapted, and while manga was running every two months and so had longer chapters, too. So even if you don't anything that lasts two or three episodes this season they'll do it eventually if we get more seasons.
That said, I did see a Tumblr post that purported to have the list of chapters being adapted for the season, and while they did miss one (it wasn't in their list), they have been right so far with what they did list. If they are right, I suspect there will be at least one two parter.

The original comb was from a seashell he found. Maybe he can only magic parts of himself.
What a great surprise that was though. I also got a chuckle out of how Nyanko-sensei was skittering like a bug ahead of Natsume as he climbed the tree. And any episode with Misuzu in it is a win for me.

Quote: | Because her kind grandfather was able to see yokai, Taki has always been intrigued by the supernatural. |
Her grandfather could not see youkai, which was why he tried making the forbidden spirit circle that revealed any youkai that entered it. He was deeply interested in them though, which fueled all his dabbling in such arcana.
Quote: | Unless he's squeezing Sensei, the yokai's presence makes it nearly impossible for Isamu to bear being in his childhood home. Why is that? It's never fully explained! |
I thought it was explained pretty well, at least by speculation and empirical evidence. Sensei figured because the youkai was sort of possessing Isamu, all the weird and random wards their grandfather had set up all over the house was making the youkai sick, and it was passing those feelings on to Isamu. Sensei was ok in the house because he'd gotten used to it. And he figured that his great spiritual power would suppress the youkai, which in fact appeared to be the case, since Isamu was fine while Sensei was perched on his head or shoulder.

I think there's probably a good possibility we'll see Isamu again. Human friends Natsume makes tend to have second appearances, even if episodic yokai tend not to--Shibata really seemed like a character we'd never see again, for example, but he showed up again much later. I think Isamu being a yokai skeptic is interesting enough Midorikawa might return, especially if he's going random places people have seen yokai in and thus is likely to attract trouble. His connection with Taki also makes it more likely he'll come back around, since she's part of Natsume's inner circle.

Natori's theme music never gets old. Brings a smile to my face every time he shows up sparkling for his fans.

Quote: | Was anybody going to tell me that Natori and Matoba were friends in high school, or was I supposed to find out by watching the show? |
I think "friends" is overstating it, but yes, we've known they were acquainted in high school since "A World Unbent," S5/E8. Natori met Matoba at a meeting of exorcists, and later sort of helped Matoba (well, failed to help, really) exorcise a youkai that was targeting exorcists. Remember the mansion with the kimono of many colors on the tree branch?
Also, Matoba is younger than Natori, which makes them becoming friends at that age even less likely.
