"Limited Grossing Potential" my ass.

We're talking about a sequal to one of the most respected and well-known animated films out there. One with (presumably) a huge budget, and judging from that short teaser, eye-popping animation. The only thing "limiting" the grossing potential would be a COMPLETE lack of promotion. Judging from past efforts, that will probably be the case.

so does it mean they own the rights? so it will be them to make the DVD and stuff? cause it seems like they're taking a long time for Millenium Actress. but maybe thats just me.

Byron: Out of fairness, GITS has long been a tough-sell in Japan, because Shirow's art sucks whenever he's not drawing porn. (Well that and the fact that he throws around futuristic terminology like it's a trend.) And Oshii's first movie lost to Memories at the box office. I think the only reason it's making any money there now is that it's leeching off of the popularity of the Matrix the way Yamato leeched off the popularity of Star Wars, even though it was also older. And according to http://www.boxofficemojo.com/genres/anime.htm GITS has only made a fraction of Princess Mononoke. So no, despite its recognition, it's not the power-house everyone makes it out to be.

"Limited Grossing Potential" sounds about right to me. Anime has yet to prove to be proffitable in theaters, no matter how many awards they win (just look at Spirited Away).

I bet it will be to make it "appeal" to a wider audience...

More importantly: Will it be given a good English dub?

IIRC, Millennium Actress is -not- being dubbed. As another DreamWorks release, I'm wondering if the same will be true for GitS. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

To reiterate my point from past threads, the big studios pick up the rights to anime films to sell them on DVD/video, because there's enough of a profit to be made from the anime fandom niche to be interesting to them. The fact remains that the studios doubt that anime films, excluding the kiddy TV franchises, would make back at the box office what they'd spend on the prints and advertising for a wide release, which is why the releases of anime films never exceed 200 screens, barring Oscar wins**, and even that was only limited-wide, and Bend It Like Beckham beat the pants off of it with no advertising (at the time) and 1/6th the number of screens.

**Bah... I still like Lilo & Stitch more...

Tenchi: Anime movies would be more successful here if fans waited instead of bootlegging them. (Or at least paying for them after they downloaded them.)

Perhaps, but I don't bootleg (though I do seem them at festivals often before the theatrical release). I don't think there is a single movie every North American anime fan would be interested in seeing (yes, some anime fans even don't like Ghibli), but even if, say, 90% of anime fans paid to see an anime film in the first weekend of a hypothetical wide release, I doubt it would be enough to float it.

For this specific film, I'd wait and read the spoilers and see what anime fans are saying to find out if it's as boring as the first one (nothing against Mamoru Oshii... Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer is my favourite anime film, but Ghost in the Shell; I watched it a couple of times in 1996 and didn't see what the fuss was about, then I re-watched it in December and it still did absolutely nothing for me).

Oshii's GITS only satisfies if you hate Shirow's GITS. Of course Shirow actually one-upped Oshii this time, because his GITS 2 looks nothing like Blade Runner or The Matrix.

The man and machine interaction keeps me reading the manga and wishing the GitS 2 will be released soon. It like watching a series about the Borg, but less evil and more entraining. Razz

I disagree with this - I think that given the chance most of the people whom downloaded digi-subs would still go the the theature to see the movie and would still go out and buy the DVD. For example, Cowboy Bebop:Knocking on Heavens Door and a digi-sub out of the movie a full year before it was out here in north america, yet it had fair showing for a limited release movie, and it has had good DVD sales. IMHO, I feel the the compaines are moving in the right path for digi-subbing to go by the wayside, and we should be seeing less of it going on now that anime is not as hard to get. However, I don't think that anime is going to make money in the theatures unless a company takes a chance and releases an anime in wide release.

As big as anime is in America rigth now, it is still not considered an adult hobbie. Most Americans look at it is as a hobbie for geeks who are just still stuck in childhood. A film like Spirited Away (Lilo & Sticht still should have won IMO) does surpass this limitation, but that was still only succesful because it was a childrens film at heart. GITS 2 won't be that much more succesful than Beebop or Mononoke simply because the very fact that it does cater to an older audience, which will reduce the amount of younger children that will see it, who are still the main audience for animation.
