Group C-17
Kino, Kino’s Journey
vs.
Letopanyu Spoor, Crest/Banner of the Stars franchise

Letopanyu Spoor. Quite different characters and I'd love to see them both go at least a few more rounds, but ultimately I prefer Spoor flashiness and screen dominance over Kino's sometimes overtly neutral and subdued personality.

Group C-18
Allen Schezar, Escaflowne franchise
vs.
Medicine Seller, Ayakashi, Mononoke

Medicine Seller. More a vote against Allen, since the later events in the show make it hard for me to root for him. And hey, at least the Medicine Seller looks cool.

Group C-19
Yuuko Ichihara, xxxHolic, Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle
vs.
The Count, Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo

The Count. For now, though I think his flaws will really start to hurt him in the later rounds.

Group C-20
Nicholas Wolfwood, Trigun
vs.
Taichi Keaton, Master Keaton

Taichi Keaton

Group C-21
Akira Tokizawa Eden of the East
vs.
Fee Carmichal, Planetes

Fee Carmichal. Going with what I know and Fee certainly was the coolest character in her show.

Group C-22
Kyouraku Shunsui, Bleach
vs.
Rin Tohsaka, Fate/stay night
vs.
Roy Focker, Super Dimensional Fortress Macross/Robotech

Roy Focker. Previous arguments against Kyoraku didn't make him seem particularly impressive and I will never vote for Rin, so I guess Roy's old school cool wins him this round.

Group C-23
November 11, Darker Than BLACK
vs.
Utena Tenjou, Revolutionary Girl Utena

Utena Tenjou

Group C-24
Reinhard von Lohengramm Legend of the Galactic Heroes
vs.
Roger Smith, The Big O

Roger Smith

Group C-17
Voting for: Letopanyu Spoor, Crest/Banner of the Stars franchise

Reasons: She just sounds like the character I would like more of the two. I know Kino has a lot of support but I haven't seen any great arguments to sway me her way.

Group C-18
Voting for: Medicine Seller, Ayakashi, Mononoke

Reasons: Allen is fairly cool but not a heavy contender here.

Group C-19
Voting for: The Count, Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo

Reasons: Easiest vote of the group. I still don't think Yuuko deserves to be here at all because cryptic bs =/ being cool. Yes, I'm exaggerating a bit and I do actually like her as a character ... sometimes. But her comic relief moments severely undercut any cool factor she could have and really leave me rolling my eyes and sighing at her. In contrast, The Count is awesome and suave and there is not a shred of doubt in my mind that he should and will do well here.

Group C-20
Voting for: Nicholas Wolfwood, Trigun

Group C-21
Voting for: Akira Tokizawa Eden of the East

Group C-22
Voting for: Kyouraku Shunsui, Bleach

Group C-23
Voting for: November 11, Darker Than BLACK

Reasons: If the resident shoujo expert, LydiaDianne, is voting against Utena, I have no choice but to do the same.

Group C-24
Voting for: Roger Smith, The Big O

There are a lot of tough matches this round, although that might be due to some unfamiliarity on my part.

Group C-17
Kino, Kino’s Journey
vs.
Letopanyu Spoor, Crest/Banner of the Stars franchise

Vote for: Spoor
Spoor seems to stand out more in the framework of her series and thus has a more active sense of "cool." Still, the margin of her win is still pretty narrow for me.

Group C-18
Allen Schezar, Escaflowne franchise
vs.
Medicine Seller, Ayakashi, Mononoke

Vote for: Medicine Seller
I'll give the nod to the enigmatic, immortal, demon-slaying elf-man over the fairly straightforward heroic mecha pilot.

Group C-19
Yuuko Ichihara, xxxHolic, Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle
vs.
The Count, Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo

Vote for: The Count
All the ladies want him. All the men envy him. Joji Nakata at his second finest.

Group C-20
Nicholas Wolfwood, Trigun
vs.
Taichi Keaton, Master Keaton

Vote for: Wolfwood
I'll admit to having limited knowledge on Keaton's show, so I am definitely willing to change my vote here.

Group C-21
Akira Tokizawa Eden of the East
vs.
Fee Carmichal, Planetes

Vote for: Akira
To a certain extent Fee gets hemmed in by the realistic nature of her show, preventing her from doing the awesome things that Akira accomplishes; yet Akira's attitude is aloof and eccentric enough that I'm willing to give him this one.

Group C-22
Kyouraku Shunsui, Bleach
vs.
Rin Tohsaka, Fate/stay night
vs.
Roy Focker, Super Dimensional Fortress Macross/Robotech

Vote for: Roy Focker

Group C-23
November 11, Darker Than BLACK
vs.
Utena Tenjou, Revolutionary Girl Utena

Vote for: November 11

Group C-24
Reinhard von Lohengramm Legend of the Galactic Heroes
vs.
Roger Smith, The Big O

Vote for: Reinhard

Couple of upsets this round with Faye and Lelouch going down. Lelouch was even the top mini-game pick to win his quarter of the bracket in the next round. Eboshi vs. Nana could be interesting next round.

Anyway, results. Olliff regained what little lead he lost last round. Overall results were average for a second round bracket.

Difficult round for me. There aren’t any match-ups where I’m familiar with both characters in the match-ups. So, in some cases I’m going on what little knowledge I have and the arguments in the summaries.

Group C-17
Kino, Kino’s Journey
vs.
Letopanyu Spoor, Crest/Banner of the Stars franchise

The arguments for Spoor haven’t convinced me. Kino never, ever loses her cool.

Group C-18
Allen Schezar, Escaflowne franchise
vs.
Medicine Seller, Ayakashi, Mononoke

Of these two, I’ve only seen the first episode of The Vision of Escaflowne. Based on the arguments provided, Medicine Seller comes across as the more intriguing character.

Group C-19
Yuuko Ichihara, xxxHolic, Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle
vs.
The Count, Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo

The Count: If and when the Count loses, it will be against a formidable opponent. Nothing has convinced me so far that Yuuko Ichihara meets the grade.

Group C-20
Nicholas Wolfwood, Trigun
vs.
Taichi Keaton, Master Keaton

In a weak series, Nicholas Wolfwood stood out as easily the most interesting character. In a stronger show he would be overshadowed. Going by the series trailers Master Keaton comes across as the superior entry. Mind you, I’ve never been convinced to watch the series so I guess the gap between the two is narrow.

Group C-21
Akira Tokizawa Eden of the East
vs.
Fee Carmichal, Planetes

I’ve seen Planetes and the first episode of Eden of the East. That first episode hasn’t encouraged me to watch the series, so Akira clearly wasn’t cool enough. I agree with Generic #757858 that Fee Carmichael is the coolest of a bunch of mostly uncool workmates but, again, she isn’t the strongest candidate in the tourmament.

Group C-22
Kyouraku Shunsui, Bleach
vs.
Rin Tohsaka, Fate/stay night
vs.
Roy Focker, Super Dimensional Fortress Macross/Robotech

Rin Tohsaka: When you’re suffering from massive blood loss and you can slowly, calmly and methodically explain to someone as obtuse as Shirou Emiya what he must do next, well… that is the epitome of cool to me. ”There are a few things I think you should do.”

Group C-23
November 11, Darker Than BLACK
vs.
Utena Tenjou, Revolutionary Girl Utena

Utena because she transformed anime and that’s cool.

Group C-24
Reinhard von Lohengramm Legend of the Galactic Heroes
vs.
Roger Smith, The Big O

Roger Smith because tomatoes rule.

What about this resident shoujo expert's opinion?

Group C-17

Kino, Kino’s Journey

Group C-18
Allen Schezar, Escaflowne franchise

Group C-19
Yuuko Ichihara, xxxHolic, Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle

Group C-20
Taichi Keaton, Master Keaton

Group C-21
Akira Tokizawa Eden of the East

Group C-22
Rin Tohsaka, Fate/stay night

Group C-23

Utena Tenjou, Revolutionary Girl Utena
When it comes to general cool, for me, breaking boundaries is a major component. A typical little girl, when rescued from heartache and loss (her parents had just died) by a handsome prince who kisses her and gives her a ring, will often dream of finding that prince and marrying him one day. Not Tenjou Utena. No, she dwells on that feeling of being helped, how it saved her from the dark place and from wanting to die. She doesn't want to marry the prince, she wants to emulate him. She wants to rise up and rescue others from their pain. And so she does. Not only does she emulate rescue, but also takes on the air of a prince. The boys encourage her to join their teams (she refuses--she's a girl, after all, she doesn't want to be a boy, just a prince). The girls adore her, fawning over their Utena-sama. And slowly, she breaks the shell around the heart of Anthy, the one to be saved, the one that doesn't realize she wants to be saved.

Okay, so that argument is almost more for a best hero competition, but she really is cool as she does all of this. She even fashions a dress out of a tablecloth to keep Anthy from humiliation. Not to mention wearing a modified uniform (masculine, although nothing like the boys' uniform at Ohtori), earning the ire of teachers and cheers of fellow students.

Group C-24

Roger Smith, The Big O

Hmm, okay, I might be open to change. I don't really have much knowledge about either show (a bit more about Utena which is one I actually plan to watch).

No thanks needed. Anime Network on Demand has it up--I've got about 4 eps to catch up on, and it's great so far.

I was so sure that she was a dude, though. xD.

You would be far from the first viewer to make that mistake. Wink

My favorite vote justification yet this round! Definitely a reference people won't get unless they've seen the whole series. (In an interesting bit of timing, the episode which speaks to the truth of that statement just played on late-night Adult Swim in the U.S. over this past weekend.)

I'm going to hold off on voting for a day or two more because I'm still not sure how I want to vote in a couple of matches. The early returns suggest that this may be one of our most competitive R2 Groups ever; with 11 votes in, 5/7 one-on-one matches are split 6/5 and no one has the majority in the three-way.

Group C-17
Kino, Kino’s Journey vs.
Letopanyu Spoor, Crest/Banner of the Stars franchise
Choosing: Spoor
Because NRrragghhaaah! Must I choose? I want both of them to move on.
I'm going with Spoor because she's more lively. So much assertiveness, self-confidence, and charm. Vivacious.

Group C-18
Allen Schezar, Escaflowne franchise vs.
Medicine Seller, Ayakashi, Mononoke
Choosing: Medicine Seller
Because Mainly based on what people have said about the Medicine Seller.

Group C-19
Yuuko Ichihara, xxxHolic, Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle vs.
The Count, Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo
Choosing: The Count
Because Both enthralling mysterious entities, but Yuuko doesn't wield her charisma and intrigue quite as much as The Count.

Group C-20
Nicholas Wolfwod, Trigun vs.
Taichi Keaton, Master Keaton
Choosing: Keaton
Because The breadth and depth of Keaton's expertise give him a leg up over a character who lingers in my memory primarily as a few quirks.

Group C-21
Akira Tokizawa Eden of the East vs.
Fee Carmichal, Planetes
Choosing: Akira
Because Someone suggested that Akira is primarily just some kid with a lot of money at his disposal. I heartily disagree. Akira achieves a number of his most impressive feats based on sheer personality. He talks a hikkikomori out of a year (two year?) long withdrawal from society not just out of his apartment, but into action to help save the country. He captivates one of his revivals so thoroughly that she essentially sacrifices spoiler[her own chance at winning Mister Outside's game] for him. Everything he does in the first episode is done without any knowledge of the resources he has available to him. And consider the crooked cop who was also a Selacao: he ended up as little more than gutter trash, so it's not the money that imparted charisma.
Fee's a great character, too, and she's got her crew's back whenever they need her, but when did she ever radically alter a stranger's personality after only a single conversation?

Group C-22
Kyouraku Shunsui, Bleach vs.
Rin Tohsaka, Fate/stay night vs.
Roy Focker, Super Dimensional Fortress Macross/Robotech
Choosing: Roy Fokker
Because Since the character I really wanted to move on here is the only one of the four who didn't make it through the first round, I'll take my second pick.

Group C-23
November 11, Darker Than BLACK vs.
Utena Tenjou, Revolutionary Girl Utena
Choosing: Utena
Because November's got more than enough fans. I don't dislike him, but I'm not one of them.

Group C-24
Reinhard von Lohengramm, Legend of the Galactic Heroes vs.
Roger Smith, The Big O
Choosing: Reinhard
Because Don't know either, and almost no one has made a case either way. In Roger's case this might be excusable because Big O is pretty well known, but LotGH is pretty obscure outside its hardcore fans. Come on, make a convert of me.
Flipped a coin.
