Yea, Welcome to the NHK ain't exactly something that's easy to watch(moreso if you can relate to the main characters, though not as bad as Satou....yet). If anything that's why it's been such an important series to me, it really let these characters go emotionally....for example, the episode(don't remember which exactly) where Yamazaki spoiler[has to go back home to Hokkaido on orders from his family, thereby abandoning a girlfriend who geniunely cared about him.(evident from the last talk they have) It continues with him and Satou having a snowball fight wherein yamazaki and Satou begin "arguing" while flinging snowballs at each other, soon however, Yamazaki really does get angry and breaks down.] I have to admit, I broke down too when I saw that....guess the timing was right. Crying or Very sad

I did enjoy the OP and ED -- the OP lures you in with high-energy pop, and the ED truly captures the dementia and insanity of the series. (Too bad the second ED is utterly generic.) That's what online stores are for Wink -- buying things that are too awkward to buy in public. And like I said in another thread, many so-called "normals" already misassociate anime with porn and other deviant works, so buying one with a racy cover isn't much different than buying one with an innocent cover. Though I guess it's different as a guy, since it's part of social expectations for guys to buy perverted/pornograchic material. suppose marketing to the perv crowd is a sound idea, but it's really misleading for Welcome to the NHK!. Anybody expecting a series full of hot babes and good times will be sorely disappointed.

I have to disagree with your comment on the 2nd ED theme, to me it was like a ray of light falling through the cracks in a wall after having crawled through a tunnel of awful self-discovery. I watch this series because...well it resonates with me and how I feel, whereas most series I'm just looking for action or crazy fights(with some romance tossed in for good measure). Cool

I also wonder why the box is coming with the second volume, I can think of a pretty vague reason ... but if anyone could explain, it would be appreciated. I used to buy volume 1 + boxes for series I haven't seen before, but appeared interesting - only to later find out I disliked them. I'm going to assume selling volume one by itself would make someone more likely to buy it, if they knew they didn't have to worry about paying extra? Confused

The only reason I watched NHK was because many people compared it to Genshiken. Aside from the obvious relation, I really didn't think they were similar at all. From the start I also viewed NHK as a drama. Sure there were a few laughs, but I really just loved the entire execution and atmosphere of the series. The characters emotions especially just seemed so realistic. spoiler[ While the series demonstrated a few stereotypes, I like that the series avoided stereotypes such as grown men don't cry, require help etc. ] The scene youkai_ronin mentioned is a great example. Actually I think every sad scene actually got to me, and I can't even relate with the characters aside from maybe one or two things. The music also was perfect at fitting the mood. There are certain songs I seriously can't listen to without feeling at least somewhat depressed. I can't recall a song ever doing that honestly.

It's ADV's new thing. Pretty much all of ADV's new releases have the artbox coming out on the second volume now. Which makes sense in that if you buy a show and decide you don't like it then your not stuck with an artbox you will never fill up. Also, and this is speculation, it might give ADV a better gauge on how many artboxes to make in total depending on how well the first volume sells.

Yeah, I definitely agree that the comparison really doesn't get you far. I actually don't really care much for Genshiken, it's not really my thing, but I love Welcome to the NHK!

I also do agree that the second EP is horribly boring. Until the switch came, I would actually watch the credit, which I almost never do, but I definitely wasn't going to be doing that with the new one. Very disappointing.

And the new artbox strategy is very smart for consumers and the company. Good work, ADV!
