Think it in bright side. The scent features in VR can use for other purposes too, such as cooking game VR.

On the one hand, "oh, you wacky Japan!"
...
on the other hand, proof of concept,. Porn has driven multiple new technologies (VHS, DVD, Internet streaming, etc). As VR adds more and more senses it becomes more and more "real". Tech developed in labs become commercially viable quicker and are improved with the revenue streams that are initially provided by porn, basically using a powerful human drive (sex) to drive new ideas and concepts. Instead of the invasive and nasty "plug wired into your skull" envisioned by earlier SF writers, we have VR with sight and now smell. Taste is being researched in University labs now, how much longer for touch? Imagine walking the streets of Tokyo without having to spend 14 hours crammed into a nasty steel tube, no jet lag, no carbon footprint, no expensive flight many cannot afford. Just put on the VR and be there, taste the food, smell the scents of spring, actually be there without having to leave your home?

This is the future, make no mistake, staring you right in the face.

Everyday we inch closer and closer to a dystopian cyberpunk future, and I'm okay with that.

Heh, nobody has called me a kid in over 40 years, so thanks for that Smile. As for "immorality". What if that "virtual girlfriend" is an avatar being controlled by your wife(or husband)? Would it be immoral, then? I've seen morality change so much in just my short life, who's to say what will be "immoral" ten, twenty years from now? The technology is going to make for some very interesting changes in how we perceive the world, and each other. And it's coming at lot faster than most can imagine.

Nothing wrong with that! To each their own. Imagine if it was a Yuri!!! on Ice or some BL VR game... then it'd be okay?

Ok so the "fixing" of other people's post when you quote them can stop now. It's disingenuous at best, and simply trollish at worst. If you're going to respond to someone's post then actually respond to what they said. Don't misquote them and "fix it" for them to conform to your own view. I have removed the "fixing" parts as well.

What disturbs me more is that they will want to at least be somewhat accurate. Do they have a used underwear sniffing connoisseur on staff?

Well the future of human morality and social norms is quite a frightening thing to behold. Especially since morality nowadays seems to mean what ever anyone wants it to mean rather than beckoning from the inner conscience. And as far as indecent human pleasures help advance science, other morbid methods such as human experimentation and whatnot could take us much further in the field than the more conventional methods. In my opinion no matter how convenient or beneficial something can be for the sake of science the fundamental's of morality and conscience are not worth violating. I guess to what extent something is immoral to you or anyone else is no longer bound by traditional law. Confused
