Personally, I think that big robots aren't enough of a pop cultural icon in the US for a Hollywood Patlabor movie to really work. As others point out, remove the big robots and that basically leaves you with a police comedy, or in other words a Police Academy remake.

That's cool but I can't for the life of me figure out why Hollywood would be paying Patlabor any attention.
