Seitokai Yakuindomo (TV)
With this series, the producers must be trying cause cognitive dissonance in viewers. The first episode started out looking like yet another generic high-school comedy. Then came the dirty jokes. A LOT of them. All female characters look like innocent 'bishoujo', but they make dozens of sexual references per minute! It's kind of funny, but it gets old fast so let's hope this show has something else to offer. I won't be holding my breath though. |

First episode wasn't bad, but it wasn't laugh out loud or anything either. The dirty jokes are fun to an extent, but after a while you start to feel as awkward as the guy in the middle of them.

Well it is not quite what I expected, my brother was able to come up with a good description though, it is like Kaichou wa Maid-sama meets Seitokai no Ichizon meets B Gata H Kei. But I do wonder if B Gata H Kei's Yamada might be outdone in dirty jokes by the girl in this one, kind reminds me of when I was in school being told that girls from all girls schools being desperate for stimulation.
We also got a short girl who is child like, seems to be quite the staple in a lot of shows lately, so it looks like we will be getting a lot of short jokes. Not really original but the short jokes usualy makes me laugh. And the other girl, well looks like the motherly one, but like Sietokai no Ichizon's Chizuru, she also has a twistered side and if I am not mistaken they might have implied she is spoiler[a lesbian.] Wll I don't really have any qualms with this show, just as long as they do not over use jokes and expand on what they have already set up. |

Hm. I unexpectedly found the first episode to be entertaining enough to continue watching. Possibly because the male lead doesn't really freak out often or nosebleed at anything, and in general isn't one of the annoying types. The girls look more or less entertaining, too, and teh dirty jokes. "This is the classroom that's almost always empty..." However, so far it's less than stellar, and might get old fast.
The ad was funny though. And is their TV really so prude that they have to beep out every other word? |

Usually shows that are based on 4-koma at least try to hide it.
This one didn't at all. It was just a bunch of small jokes that aren't even connected most of the time with the repeating eyecatches thrown in between them. Dropped. Not because of the erotic humor, cause some of it was funny, but because of the actual format of the show. |

That's what I was thinking. Aside from the beginning, even if the scenes were played in random order, the episode would still make just as much sense. For now I don't find it bad enough to be dropped. Working!! was worse I'd say. At least this show doesn't have excessively annoying characters. |

I agree with Megiddo in that this is the first anime based on a 4-koma in which I actively realized it was a 4-koma. All the scenes/jokes are too random or otherwise go at a predictable pace. I was kinda bored by this. I'll watch episode 2 to see if it's any better but as of now, not impressed.
And it's not because of the ero-ero either cause B Gata H Kei is one of my favorite comedies. The sex jokes in here were trying too hard to be subtle without actually being subtle (I know that sounds weird) and as such, it's just not funny. I will say though that ED sung by angela is made of win. |

It may not be great but it's the best of the new shows I've seen so far. Lots of little laughs. I'm thinking it'll solidify and be more coherent soon.
I think you have to forgive shows, especially single season large ensemble gag comedy shows in the first episodes. They can't be subtle, they always have to rush the introductions in order to get as much as possible established before they can attempt more involved situations. |

I think i will give this show a few more episodes for a try, i was not a big fan of the first episode. It was mildly funny, but i think that the jokes just lack subtlety and being so forward kind of takes away from the cleverness of the show. Also, it seemed to lack order, one moment we are on the first day, then we are on the third day and after that its kind of hard to keep track the next day from the previous day. Things just seem to randomly happen. I just found the style of comedy rather dry and after a while i just cant see watching enjoying the humor since it will become rather awkward and repetitive to me.

I had to watch the scene with the piano twice to make sure I didn't hear things (didn't read the subs). LOL! "Put the top of the piano to good use" - or something like that. Nice one there. I liked the ecchi jokes all over the place, and unlike BGHK's female lead that girl doesn't act like a barking dog.
I liked the art style. It's not flashy, with no bubbles floating about. Not distractive. The character design fits my taste nicely, and there's no unnecessary facial expressions added on an effort to make things look funnier. I'd say the setting is really generic, but the overall is somewhat unique. Definitely my favorite so far. |

And destroy the gags by ruining their rhythm. While I thought the gags were getting a little repetitive by the end of the episodes, I really enjoyed the pacing and delivery of them. Felt much more like the sort of stuff you'd get on Wonderful back in the late nineties than the soporific treatment you might expect nowadays. |

Totally agree on the 4-koma-ness of it all, which I do find a little off-putting. However, the first eppie had enough charm for me that I'll continue to check it out. This is another show that managed to clear the bar of my Low Expectations.

This is really true. It is definitely visually appealing, as all of the characters and background are drawn very nice. None of the characters body dimensions are absurd either- except the shortest girl I've ever seen lol. The boy could not be more average as well. The jokes alone provide the humor, no need for blown up heads or those giant white eyes |

What I wrote in my Anime list:
Yes, I know I know, but no matter how dirty it is, something this consistently funny deserves at least a Very Good. Many parody shows focus on stringing together scenes from individual works, whereas this one has in its sights the entire high-school Comedy-Romance genre, Ecchi or not. From the lyrics and visuals of the catchy ED to the hilarious "stamped" messages that come up, the more you know about Anime and its various cliches the funnier it is. It loves to break the fourth wall and poke fun at not only other shows but itself as well. And then it has a few passes at the actual Anime industry, like when it claimed that a certain censored scene would not be uncensored for the DVD release. Watching Seitokai Yakuindomo was so refreshing. As has been said many times before by other people, the style is very reminiscent of the 4-koma comic strips in Japan. A short and usually innocuous setup, a crazy and/or dirty twist, and the reaction from the "straight man" (which in this case was usually Tsuda). With such short jokes, any that didn't work - and they were rare - were quickly removed from the screen and replaced with something else. That said, the show still managed to have plots (of sorts). It didn't feel vapid or unsubstantial just because of the setup; indeed, having so many varied and interesting scenes did provide the audience with a great insight into the mind of each of the characters. There wasn't any development per se, but this is a pure comedy show after all. Any time the show looked like it was getting too serious the scene was immediately stamped on, usually by gently laughing at a particular cliche or trope (a heartfelt confession, walking under the same umbrella, you name it). I also loved how although there were hints of romance in the latter stages, it deliberately never went anywhere. It is difficult to poke fun at cliches if you are using them in a serious way. One thing that cannot go unmentioned was how risqué and just plain dirty this show was. Masturbation jokes (both male and female) were a dime a dozen, and there were frequent mentions of S&M and oral sex. But hey, as long as you are in your mid-teens or older, there is nothing here that should genuinely offend. I was a little shocked at the "maturity" of the material that made it to air, but I didn't mind it. And the dirty jokes were often so funny (or at least outrageous) I couldn't help but laugh anyway. This show isn't for everyone, that much is obvious. However, if you are fed up with the same old cliched shows appearing season after season, then this is very much worth a look. Which is hilarious in a way, because its description (boy goes to recent all-girls school and falls in with the all-female student council) is so cliched in itself. But trust me, this show is so much more than that. |

Yep, I ended up enjoying this one a lot, too. Don't really have much to add to dtm42's comprehensive comments other than to say I really enjoyed the creepy voice that Newspaper Girl's seiyuu used as well as the squeaky-cute voice of Judo Girl. Very much hope there will be another season, which seemed to be hinted at when Prez and Vice-Prez indicated they would stay on the Council despite being 3rd years (and therefore having to study for college entrance exams).
It's hard to pick, but I'd say my favourite gag was when Prez gave the male lead a souvenir from her trip: a porn book called The Dancer's Make-up is Cum. |
