Glad to see this so quickly, I just finished chapter 6 Tsumihoroboshi last week.

Tsumihoroboshi corresponds to the last arc in the first season of the anime, and had a lot more content than the anime, and did a better job of explaining everything (plus a hugely important point that the anime left out entirely).

Miinagoroshi will be all new to me, and I eager to dive in.

Are these just interactive novels?

I've seen season 1 and 2 of the anime and it left quite the impression on me. I thumb through the manga when I'm at Borders/Barnes and see it mimics the anime it terms of story.

I'm really curious as to how these games play out.

As far as I know (I've played Umineko, but not Higurashi), they're not interactive. They're like VNs without choices.

I've read some of the Umineko VNs and they were way better then the anime. I hear it's the same case with Higurashi. And I read today that the Euro was down so now might be a good choice to purchase these.

One of the previous chapters of Higurashi has a a simple choice in the tips section. The gist was to show you that having choices does not alter the story being told to you here.

That being said, I was stunned when I ran into what seems like a story altering choice a good ways into Minagoroshi.
I have not reloaded and played through that section again so I can only say "seems" above. As a fan of the previous 6, I of course am liking this so far.
