Part of the anime appeal for so many fans is the extra merchandise. Some people go to great lengths to get wallscrolls, figures, plush dolls, etc. I'd rather spend my money on dvds and manga. I have a few anime posters and such but my attention goes the meat and potatoes of anime. Do you think one's collection of extra stuff is a gauge of their anime fandom or just a personality quirk?

My vote goes to personality quirk. I love the heck outta anime, but my merch only extends to a single YuYu Hakusho t-shirt, a few OSTs and some DVDs.

I think that your question closely goes along with this thread

animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=8518

Just need to ask if being a fan means buying extra merchandise or is it a personal preference?

I think how much stuff someone owns is a gauge of how much money they're willing/able to spend, and nothing else. You could be the biggest fan in the world, but if you got $5 a week from your mom from lunch money, you can't buy a lot of collectibles. Likewise, you could be a lukewarm fan but have lots of stuff because you think it looks cool, and you have the money for it.

Though hardcore fans do tend to make bigger sacrifices with their money to get the items they want.

Hm...bust armature for Sculpture class or pre-order 1/100 scale Master Grade Gundam Freedom model kit?

Yeah, sometimes I wish I was that irresponsible. Razz

I am a huge anime fan but I really cant spend the money on anime merchandise since I really need to buy a bigger amp for my new guitar. Really you dont need anime merchandise to be a hardcore fan although it gives you some bragging rights if youve more stuff then the other anime fan when youre trying to see who is a bigger anime fan. I tend to buy more merchandise over dvds becouse I found I just dont watch the dvds much. of course I also dont play with my figures but its cheaper to collect capsule figures and other misc stuff ie plushies and by far of what i own my most "WTH" is my Nemo from da Capo towel I have hanging on my wall we;; maybe not as bad as the CCS pillow case that came with the DreamCast game collectors edition but I sold that for way more then what the collecers box had cost me.

I have a chibi Vash plushie! He wards off the evil monkey in my closet and other various evils that dwell in my room. Also, my one friend recently picked up a Kureneko bobble head. Anime catgrin

I haven't got much. One Deunan poser I remember, 'cos it came with a preview DVD of the new Appleseed movie which I wanted.

You can't "watch" collectibles. I think they're just a waste of money but that's just my humble opinion. The only thing I'd go for is a little trinket to hang on my mobile phone. But I've yet to find one I like.

I think you cannot really say it's one or the other. I have seen lots of animes already and I don't feel the urge to spend all my money on some silly toys. If there is an anime though that really gets me into it then there is a chance I could buy something like a callendar or an artbook. I even thought about buying those cute littly toys that appear in the Kodocha anime, although they are way too expensive and really unnecessary. Things that I will probably never buy are t-shirts with anime characters printed on, dolls and maybe not even posters. So if I should spend my money on such merchandise stuff (which is rather unlikely to happen) then mostly for things that I see in an anime; cool clothes, funny toys and stuff like that - not directly anime connected things. (<-- not sure if you can follow me; I admit what I say does not make too much sense ^^)
