Both Gokusen and Great Teacher Onizuka started out as manga, then a live action series and eventually an anime series.
Both feature very unorthodox teachers who can handle unruly students.
Anything else you want to add?

They both have "unappealing" character designs (though the ones for Gilgamesh tops it as the most unappealing).

I thought the GTO character designs were fine, but it's been a while since the last time I watched it, and if I give it a second viewing that oppinion could change.

I really like to see what you can come up as appealing for GTO character. Are they suppose to look like real teachers? Nah, that would be too typical and boring. I just think that because they're not bishouhen or pretty, that doesn't mean they're not appealing to girls.

I loved both live actions of Gokusen and GTO. I've seen some GTO anime and think it's pretty cool. I've seen only snippiets of the Gokusen anime I'll check it out in the future. The greatest reason why I Love Gokusen Live Action is that the actress that plays Yamaguchi Kumiko is freakin' gorgeous.

The actress who plays Yankumi in the Gokusen drama is Nakama Yukie. She plays Sadako in Ring 0: Birthday. I thought the Gokusen drama was more realistic and had more fleshed out characters. I thought Onizuka's student crew in the drama were too one-dimensional comapred to Sawada and his crew.
Anyway, I preferred the Gokusen drama over the GTO one, and the GTO anime over the Gokusen one. I have yet to read the Gokusen manga.
My favorite characters are Tetsu, Minoru, Yankumi, Sawada and his crew.
I wish it had Yankumi in more Yakuza activities (unless she does in the manga). Like she participates in a drive by, drug deal, bribing a politician, or something like that. I also didn't like how her grandfather in the drama didn't seem so yakuza-ish. He seemed too nice. In the anime, he at least has an intimidation aura. As in if you mess with him, you're in deep crap.
And some trivia. The guy who plays Sawada and Kumai make a cameo in another drama (forgot the title). This other drama was about how a guy wants to be a nursery school teacher and he's in the same boy band with the actor who plays Sawada.
