Pretty prescient.

DVDs have in fact increased the audience, largely due to the choice of language. Now if only it didn't have to be either/or; why limit it to only two language tracks?
Wouldn't it be nice if one could hear Jean Reno in French as the voice of Porco Rosso, with English subs?

I would rather have Japanese, as the quality of the voice acting is usually better. But not always.
The dubs of Ranma Half were great, with people like Teryl (Stargate) Rothery as Kodachi. Fushigi Yugi did well I thought, with the obnoxious neighbor's actor tying to adapt the anime style of comic multi-octave speak-to-shout-to-speaking-again acting.
It's fun, even humerous, to switch from Sonia singing "Tenchi Muyo in Japanese to english in mid-sentence. And If I wanna do a little housework while a familiar story is going on in the background, English is better.
So I have never been passionate about this argument, which I have heard now for 25 years, and for HK movies even longer.

What's interesting is the changes that have taken place in the meantime regarding fansubs, which I find I do prefer. I would rather read syntax clubbed to death by an angel, who wanted to convey as possible, than prose written to appeal to the lowest possible (Anglophone) mental denominator.

While I am not familiar with all of the companies releasing anime today, I believe I have seen a slacking off on the attention to cultural detail that drew so many of us to the sub-medium in the first place. Fan subbers for the most part translate the puns, the food references*, and other semi-relevant or interesting info.
Mahou, for instance, do an amazing job.

As long as fansubs of unreleased material remain legal, I believe they will provide a necessary barometer of what the professional companies will need to translate themselves.
Not to mention the quality they will need to aspire to.

What the...? This article is ancient. But, yes, its interesting to see how much has changed in just the past seven years.

There's alot I like to point out with first of all not all of us grew up with anime in its original language correct? I mean not all of us have seen anime in its original language at such a young age wherever we were born or live we saw it in our language I'm sure. So how can people seriously complain about how its not its original language. Look I honestly can say I approve of its original language and that of my own. But honestly kids have to start out somewhere and the way anime is marketed to us is in our own language. No child will want to sit there reading pokemon on tv. Its not likely. I mean why do people complain so much when they see anime in dubbing if you dont like it then buy the dvd that gives you the choice of watching it in whatever language you like. With whatever subtitles you like. However i do believe more languages and more subtitles should be allowed. But honestly what do you have to complain about. The only people that complain are the ones that watch it online or just watch it on t.v. the whole point is to support the anime and the company and if you like the anime so much that you see on tv then buy the dvd or if it interest you but you dont like the language then buy it. Not that complicated and i dont see why everyone has to be forced to only watch subtitle anime because certain people dont like english dubs. Put a mixture of both i say. Another thing i like to point out is alot of fans just complain about the dubbing i mean i know it was explained above but come on do you ever think about the expenses that go into making a anime and how much it must cost to hire the people that do the dubbing hardly i bet most people all they can see is the small picture they dont really think about how much work goes into that anime dubbing even if some voice actors/actresses arent so good you never actually give the credit do you? I mean really if you were in that creators position and you barely had enuff money but you wanted it to happen because you wanted everyone in the world to be able to watch your anime in there own language wouldnt you do anything to make it happen? Why are people so thick and can't see whats right infront of there eyes.

I have alot of passion for anime and manga and the companys that produce them and im most grateful for the dubbing they do being a artist i know how much time and work and money goes into that project so I think that maybe the fans are just ungrateful and inconsiderate.

As for anime network I hope you release both types of animes on your ch. Please do I like the choice of having one series in sub and the other in dub its nice Smile
