I just watched an episode of "Detective Conan" on Adult Swim, but the name was changed to "Case Closed". Why did they change the name? Also, I liked the episode, so how many episodes are there in this series? I've heard that there are quite a few made-for-tv-movies and specials as well.

I really don't know why they changed the name. Maybe they wanted to have a more exciting title. Well the encyclopedia does wonders for information on anime series.
Here are the episode titles and the number of episodes. anime#454 |

The title change is due to FUNimation attempting to avoid legal altercations with the rights holders of the Conan name in America (most likely Conan the Barbarian). Just like Capcom changing Biohazard to "Resident Evil" in America due to the band Biohazard already owning the name. As for the characters' name changes, nobody really knows for sure, though I have a suspicion that it's a request by the Japanese producers (wouldn't be the first time).

Conan the Barbarian: A muscle bound powerhouse that wears a loincloth and weilds a big-ass sword. Detective Conan: A kid detective, barely 3 feet tall. Conan O'Brian: An Irish Comedian with his own Late-Night talk show. Yeah, I don't see the similarities other than name. |

Just a bit ago, NHL player Tony Twist sued Todd McFarlane for using his name in Spawn. The Character? Antonio Twisterelli, a 500 pound Italian mafioso. Just because there aren't many (or ANY) similiarities outside of the name doesn't mean a lawsuit won't go through. Also, Resident Evil is a kickin' rad name as compared to Biohazard. |

The case only held water because McFarlane is a "certified" and well known Hockey Fan. Which I might add sets a dangerous precedent for all forms of entertainment. By that case's logic, someone named Jessica Fletcher could sue the author and makers of Murder, She Wrote for ruining her life, because now she has a "reputation" of having people drop dead around her just by association. |

With enough money, lawyers can do anything, and the "Conan" name is owned by Fox.

About the name changes, the japanese producers helped with funimation on the name changes to appeal for an american audience. I don't care about the name changes as long as the story is not changed.

And that's all it takes. Name copyrights have nothing to do with likenesses. Just ask Hasbro, they're really starting to regret letting many of their names from the 80's expire. Now they have to be either sneaky (Jazz -> Autobot Jazz) or make changes (Shockwave -> Shockblast). Emerje |

You sound quite reasonable. Most people would have screamed bloody murder about name changes, for example: "His name isn't Jimmy,it's Shinichi!" or "Don't call her Rachel!Call her Ran!" You get the idea.Heh. |

You're all forgetting Spike Lee, who may be a good filmmaker but can pretty stupid sometimes. He sued Spike tv because people think he's involved with the channel. |

Actually I don't think anyone thought he was involved in the channel. He sued on the basis that people might think that he was involved with the channel and/or that the channel was showing his point of view on things. |

That's what I meant. I forgot to add the "might" there.
![]() Anyway, this stuff doesn't just happen with names. Donald trump recently tried to own the saying "You're fired". He might as well sue the billions of bosses who use that to fire people. |

I don't mind the name changes, though it is kinda . . . interesting . . . when they are reading something that is obviously a Japanese name (with the kanji and kana) and they say something like "John Peterson."
Regarding the series itself, I am so far not too impressed. It's not a bad show, but the logic they use to come up with the conclusions sometimes feel forced. |
