Oh God, this reminds of the old D&D mini packs. But these are much more pink!
 I'd have to buy a case of the D&D mini's and sell the extras on EBAY. I guess one could do the same with the K-ON! mini's. But not me! Not even as a joke for D&D night.

It apears you missed the other great evil of trading figures by luck.
The dreaded secret figures, the ones they don't list and upon buying your second entire box suddenly find one of. Often something realy minor, like a different facial expression or different pose that it doesn't list. Or 5 of the figures (with doubles) appear in every whole box, and only two change between each, so you'd need at least 3 entire boxes to finish a set. It gets to a point where it can actually be cheaper to buy each off a reseller than to buy enough boxes to get a full set. |

Nice review - my sister has two of these K-on figures and i think they look FAR better than the petit Professor Layton ones, which are VERY sloppily panted.
But I must chime in and say not all trading figure sets are as evil as many seem to think. Kotobukiya and Good Smile know how to do it right. I bought the box of Hetalia One Coin Grande Figures (kotobukiya), a box of 10 - there are 10 figures in the set - hence one of each. And this wasn't just absurd luck, every other person who got the box got the whole set too. I also got the Vocaloid Puchi trading figure set (Good Smile) which was an even better deal, 12 in the box, 11 in the set, and you get all 11 of the figures plus a random double. (the only thing left to chance in the set is who the double will be. I got Kaito, my friend got Len. the extra Kaito was thus an easy christmas gift for my sister) Both cost the same price, around $60, and both sets of figures (particularly the Vocaloid one...Good Smile are legendary) are -incredibly- well made and well worth the money. These K-On ones are 'okay' to me, but I wouldnt say the set is worth $60. Trading figures make more sense if you have an opportunity to trade them socially, rather than just through internet re-sales. I suspect the density of North American K-On! fans who also collect figures is not high enough for these, although perhaps at the larger conventions...

I have to say, for a Bandai product, it's one of their better ones. Seeing these figures up close (sorry, David, from another website), I have to say I'm a bit impressed. At least they didn't mold the things in one solid color, the paint shadows on them.
I've stayed away from the trading figures line since, as David said, one isn't guaranteed to the get entire collection (especially with this one). Though I've never seen K-On, I like the figures coming out, including this set. I may just have to start investing in them now, given that by the time the series is released here, they'll be sold out. Say, David, care to trade your duplicate 3 for a figure I have? How about a 1/8 figure for the three? Another good column. Such a shame it doesn't run as often as Shelf Life, but I'll take what I can get. See you next time! |

I bought a trading figure as a gift for a friend once at an anime con-I just asked the vendor if I could look inside the box and pick out the one I wanted (the friend was missing Chun Li). The vendor let me. I hate garbage like that where a company forces you to keep buying figures for the sake of one, or even worse, for the sake of the one rare figure in the set.

While I'm not sure that I'd want to spend $60 on a box of figures that might include repeats, I think they're pretty cute. |

I noticed the same thing with some of Bandai's Gundam trading figures: the number of figures in the set is less than the number of figures in the box, so you already know you won't get a full set. But I've been pretty lucky buying trading figure boxes from other companies. The King Gainer poses were awesome.

Gotta agree with the love for the new reviewer. I'm not usually fond of negative reviews, but this was quite well written and clearly thought out from all the different angles a toy collector might consider. Critical instead of complaining, as it were, and funny too. ^-^

Thanks for the thoughtful review! I have some of the Code Geass PPPs, but I'd say, if you're a North American collector, save buying these kind of toys for conventions, especially if you're with friends. I bought my CG PPPs at one (about 5 or so, I couldn't resist) and was lucky to only get one double, that I managed to sell right away to one of my friends. Hooray for no shipping, at least!
