xxxHolic has earned me quite a few comments on Facebook and at school, since I'm the sorta guy to write in my profile whenever I get a new book, DVD or manga. It gets worse when I'm commentinf about xxxHolic with fellow fans, and others wonder how I can watch "that cartoon porn stuff".

I once made (and print) a chart showcasing three different images: a typical anime one, and ecchi and a hentai one. Wish I could remember where the hell I left it....

The first time I ever watched anime as Art, based on glowing recommendations, was Wings of Honneamise. Carl Horn is just that convincing. Most everything else, though, seems like a load of wank. This is almost entirely due to the vocal fans who seem to be less than critical. Might be good stuff, but the need to tell everyone it's Art just turns me off, given how bored I am by the arts section in the Inquirer.

Well it's natural they would think it's porn something, with a title like xxxHolic. Alot of people are so quick to judge without gaining any understanding of what they are judging.

Here are my thoughts of streaming from another thread:
Quote:
I believe streaming works for those who would buy the DVDs in the first place. If you watch a stream and don't buy the DVDs, then you probably wouldn't of bought it in the first place.

And I stand by that 100%. If you buy a show after streaming it, you would of bought it anyways whether you could stream it or not. If you didn't buy the show you streamed, then you wouldn't of bought it regardless.

Streams, as they are now, are just legal fansubs they make you some money. They are there for the people who can't or don't want to buy DVDs. If someone who wouldn't of bought the DVDs watches a stream, then they didn't lose any money.

I feel that the people who buy DVDs don't watch many streams to begin with because they like owning DVDs. If they do watch the stream and they love buying DVDs, then they will buy it anyways (I'm this kind of person). People who watch fansubs and buy it when it's licensed are the same way. Personally, I don't stream shows I have no interest in anyways, so I usually end up watching a stream if I'm on the fence and if I like it, it's going on my To Buy List even though I just watched it for free because I love owning DVDs [that aren't sub-only]. Hell, if I can't stream it, I'd buy it anyways.

I get how you guys think they're losing money, but they aren't because they're filling in the gap for those who don't buy DVDs anyways.

With me I don't try to keep it a secret and most of my friends don't care anyway. I am the only one out of all the people that I hang out that likes to watch anime. I have lots of other interests that over shadow my anime watching habits anyway, like watching Mixed Martiarl Arts like the UFC or other sporting events. My friends might make fun of me every once in a while for it but when we are hanging it doesn't really matter. Plus I don't care what people that Idon't know think about it anyway.

Were the twins in Ouran High School Host Club identical or fraternal twins? I don't remember, is the specificity of their twin-hood ever addressed? Because they look exactly the same, but have their subtle differences. There was even an episode where they were surprised that Haruhi was able to properly identify which was which and give proof to why she knew.

The Ouran Twins were identical - and yeah, there was an episode about the subtle differences, but you gotta admit...all in all, they were still a character "unit".

Brian, I have a question about next week's question.

Exactly what do you mean by "artistic"? Are you talking about titles like Trapeze and Tortov Roddle? Or do you also include things like say, Time of Eve and even shows like Durarara or Mushi-shi? (since I consider those last two "artistic" as well)

I'd have to disagree. The twins get a kick out of the whole "who is who!" game they play on people, but it's more of a defensive mechanism they use to keep up a wall between them and others. The Ouran twins at first seem the same in every aspect, but as the show progresses there are differences in the two, and the manga goes up and beyond with the differences in their personalities (and there is a difference. One is "sweet", very thoughtful and intelligent, while the other is a mischievous troublemaker who usually drags his twin into his shenanigans, and he doesn't really think about the consequences of anything he does).

I wish the anime would have continued further with the manga because the manga takes on some interesting twin psychology as Kaoru and Hikaru mature. They progress to the point that they decide to become their own person instead of just half of a duo, and one goes so far as to completely change his appearance, and even move out for a while. Currently in the manga the "who is Kaoru and who is Hikaru" game is no more. I believe now that they've "opened up" even other girls in the school can tell them apart now if they happen to be looking the same.

The progress the twins have made in their character development is what has made them my favorite characters now in the series.

I'm not sure I completely agree that they are a character "unit." I think that's the perception they themselves were trying to give, as all of the characters were self-imposed stereotypes, but with the introduction of Haruhi into their lives, it started to split them apart and make the differences more noticeable, particularly later in the series when Hikaru begins to show more interest romantically in Haruhi. I haven't read the manga, so I don't know how different it is there, but that was always the impression I got watching the anime, that they wanted to be taken by others as a unit because it was safe with each other. Inject Haruhi and it allowed them to begin developing themselves as separate entities.

EDIT: Oh, thanks, littlegreenwolf, for proving my point before I had a chance to. Very Happy You probably put it a lot better than I ever would have, especially since you've read the manga.

The way I approach my love of anime is the same as the rest of my hobbies,if you know me then you know what i'm into. I've always thought that unless someone asked, you sort of kept that info to yourself , I don't tell random strangers I love the Oakland Raiders for the same reasons I don't tell them I love Gundam. I don't hide my fandom but I don't broadcast it either, get to know me you'll hear about it at length.

As an identical twin myself, I find this a little...disturbing. What's the deal? Is it just stereotypes or lazy characterization?

I think you can add something a bit more positive there as well ^^ Twins are something special, so many people do believe certain "mystifications" about them - like they'd understand each other completely without talking, they look alike, so their characters must be alike etc.

I agree that this is not limited to anime. It seems to be kind of a problem in real life, when twins aren't treated as two individuals in their own family, school etc. So, sometimes parents are advised to put them in seperate classes, not to always dress them alike or to give them too similar names (which they really do a lot oO;; ), so that both will be seen as individuals.

I find twins to be quite rare in anime in general, but you might to want to check out these series to see some twins with "different characters":

Ouran High School Host Club !
Higurashi no naku koro ni
Clannad (and maybe Lucky Star)
Bleach (Kurosaki's sisters are twins)

I've had that happen with xxxHOLiC before, and definitely with X. CLAMP seems to enjoy giving titles to things that force us to explain that it's not porn.

As for the answerfan question... well, I suppose I shall write in and see if I can make it 3-for-3 on getting my answers posted!

Gotta add my add my own personal fave to the twins list.

Zero and Ichiru from Vampire Knight are identical twins with different personalities. Ichiru has slighty longer hair and is physically weaker. spoiler[I should use the past tense since he's now dead.] Of course, Ichiru sort of fits the "evil twin" stereotype but I use that term loosely since he had a motivation but redeemed himself.

Are you familiar with Anime DVD Supply? I am thinking of purchasing from the site, they have a huge inventory and glowing customer reviews but I finds myself hesitating, too good to be true?

Yep, your instincts are absolutely correct - they are, in fact, too good to be true. Them's be bootlegs, there.

Apparently they are relatively high-quality bootlegs, at least, but bootlegs nonetheless.

I found it funny that they posted this on their website.

Are the DVDs your selling real or burned copies?
Please know when you make a purchase on our website you will not receive some cheap burned DVD-r(s). We do not sell home made or burned copies ever. All products on our site are professionally pressed, brand new, they have the barcode and copyright notice. Every set has full artwork and a keepsake case.

What the hell does that mean exactly, lol.
I have a Sailor Moon S box set sitting in a box right now. bootleg. Got a refund after I complained enough times to buy.com. Different seller, though.
