The review detailed exactly what I was hoping for, so thanks much, Carlos!

Score x2 + 500 Bonus! I share a similar feeling with Aria, so now I'm really looking forward to watching this.
I'm hoping the many anime I've watched, including Pani Poni Dash, will allow me the enjoyment of many of the cultural gags, even if there are no pop-up hints to help me.
Thanks, Gewürtztraminer! You just helped seal the deal.

Now I did qualify that it was nowhere near Aria, just the pacing and style and subject matter reminded me of it. I am rewatching Aria The Natural part 1 this morning, and am being blown away once again. |
Aria the Natural is great. I'm only on the 2nd disc of part 2 though. Can't wait for Origination to be released.

Was really happy to see this one get released, since I thought it had no chance in hell of it. It's about the only slice of life (other than Manabi Straight) that I can stand, and it wouldn't bother me if this show went on forever. Even with being as formulaic as it is, I can never seem to get tired of it and always notice new little things when rewatching an old episode.
My only qualm with the DVDs other than the bare-bones release is that they ended up with broadcast versions of episodes 1 and 6 (that I know of so far) and some of the art is a bit wonky in the broadcast versions and later fixed on the DVDs. Hoping episode 9 is the DVD version as it's probably the worst case of broadcast animation and art the series had.

Aaannddd... I'm not gonna bother. Which sucks, because this review got me REALLY excited for the show.
I don't understand how they could have a bunch of typos in their SUB-ONLY shows. I don't speak Japanese, so I need to have confidence in the translations that are handed to me. This is one of many reasons I avoid fansubs. If a professional product has a bunch of typos in their subs, how can I be expected to have confidence in their translations?
Ah well, it's not like I'm short on slice-of-life shows anyway.

However, if Shinbo did it, the lack of translation notes could be truly devastating. He typically has tons of signs all over the place, and there are bound to be lots of puns and cultural references (the source material is particularly fond of puns already). It'll likely still be good, but we're bound to miss out on a lot. It may be one of those cases where you buy the DVD so that you have it legally and then watch the fansubs since they're likely to have done a fair amount with the signs and cultural notes (though not having seen any fansubs for the show, I don't know for sure that any of them treated it that well. |
This is actually one of Shinbo's less pun-centric anime. No "chalkboard gags" in sight.

Lucky Star... *GROAN* I did not care for. In fact, I downright hated it. It was painfully unfunny/boring to watch, for me. The one exception being Lucky Channel at the end of every episode, which was freakin' hilarious! I thought THAT should have been the show!
And so, I'm on the fence. Perhaps I'll dip my toes into a Sub or two to test the waters. |
Lucky Star is perhaps the comparison that's least similar. Hidamari Sketch is far less Otaku-centric, and, like others have said, closer to Azumanga.

The closest Hidamari comes to is a mix of Sketchbook and Geijutsuka Art Design Class. Taking both the art elements, and the differences in calm and manic tones of both of those shows.

I'm up to episode 10, and it is indeed a paced slice-of-life show. So far, I've enjoyed it immensely simply because there's nothing to really do but sit back and watch.
Though, much like Aria, one will be watching the background in this series too! The art style approach is interesting, and I now play the game of "How many Pani Poni Dash References Are There In This Episode?" (so far, I found 3 in the series).
There's another series reference as well, but I don't know what it is given I've not seen it. But the characters pop up here and there.
I'll have this knocked out within the next 2 hours. Now the difficult part: What to watch next.

And I totally understand that. I play a lot of the visual novels that get translated over here, most are chock full of spelling, punctuation and grammar issues. But the total market for these games is so minuscule I can overlook it.
But with a DVD release? I bought this and loved it despite the errors.
It really annoys the hell out of me though. Once they they think they have it solid, how hard would it be to pass it to someone who has never seen it, is interested in it, and has 6-8 hours to kill?
When I can finally read a review of one of the quickie sub job dvds without seeing spelling, punctuation, or grammar issues used as a detraction, I will be satisfied.

Well, then the lack of translation notes and the like may not be such a big deal, but it would still have been nice to have them. With other of his shows though, it would have been a major blow.

Thanks for the review. I just bought the first season, although I was originally hesistant about getting this. Since this was a Shaft title, I imagined that even for something as seemingly down to earth as Hidamari Sketch, it would still receive the weird abstract/formalism treatment that made Pani Poni Dash! and Negima!? somewhat of a roller coaster to watch.
I'm just hoping that they made HS a bit more subtle that those two (even though in the end, I still enjoyed them).

The review is making me want to finish up season one. The DVD has been sitting on my shelf for a few weeks. I made it to episode 5 and was overblown with how cute it was.
Still Hidamari Sketch is not as "insert past Shaft series in background as a joke" deal like SZS and their other shows are. Or at least I'm having trouble spot jokes like that in this series.

Hello!~
I understand the want for absolute perfection when spending your money..
And I am sorry they have so many errors that may take away from your enjoyment from the series! The subtitles SHOULD be free of misspellings and typos so the viewer is free to enjoy the show without the "nails running down a chalkboard" effect every time you encounter an error.
Please take into consideration that even though there may be a handful of errors that made it passed QC, that there are countless others that were caught and corrected. Some days are more rushed than others, and unfortunately it shows in the finished product.
Please take my sincerest apology, and hope my eyes become sharper so I may catch more errors than usual.
Gomen ne, minna san~

Thank you for the apology, and it's good to see people own up to their mistakes.
BTW, I didn't think they were too bad, and certainly much better than many other anime and foreign films I've watched. But there is always room for improvement, and I look forward to your future work!

Believe it or not, I check ANN every day to see if they have reviewed something. I get so excited when they say they don't catch anything! (Which.. granted.. isn't a whole lot..) And then if they point them out I even go back to watch the series and see it for my own eyes.
Then I cry a little on the inside..
Please try not to let our silly mistakes take away from the true art: The anime itself. The artists and staff who pour their talents and time into something they can be proud of shouldn't be overshadowed or skipped due to our seemingly careless ways.
I thought about staying as anonymous as possible, but i figured now was the time to say something. So hello everyone!
If you catch them, please post them if you feel the need! I will most definitely jot them down and give myself a whack on the head for missing them. I understand it is no one else's responsibility but our own; However every little bit counts! It helps me learn in the process of rules I may not be aware of, myself.
Thanks everyone! You guys are majorly sharp!

The problem isn't you. It's that you seem to be the only person responsible.
Final qc should be done with no less than 2 people... 4-5 is even better. That's the only way to be sure to catch 99.9% of mistakes.
One person alone is always ALWAYS going to let 5% or more slip by. It's just the nature of the human brain.
