Death and Rebirth is just a recap of the TV series, along with a part of The End of Evangelion. With this in mind, you should pick up EoE first.

Braves is right about Death and Rebirth being a recap of the series, but if you have it on DVD from Manga I HIGHLY RECOMMEND watching it with the Mokuji Interactive Feature turned on first. They're on screen notes that makes sense of the show and the Eva universe (well, as much sense as Eva can make). Of course End of Evangelion will distort all your knowledge, but I still recommend it. That is the single greatest extra ever.

The movie is a remake, but with a few things modified. You'll see once you watch it. I only watched the first so far, but what I'm really looking forward to is the ending, and if it will be different.

Yea, from what I've gathered, in the first movie it starts as a remake with tweaks and then diverges into an alternate retelling from the second movie on. I would then assume that movies 3 and 4 will be a totally different story.
