To have the same nostalgic dub cast is really nice. Such a dubbie fanservice release deserves support.
EDIT: oops thought this was the OLD 90s series.

When I watched this I was struck with just how true to form it felt. I was late to the party with any Slayers that was released after the first season (which I watched on old VHS fansubs back in the mid 90s) so I watched Evolution pretty much right after catching up and I can say with no feelings of nostalgia that things just basically picked up right where they left off.
Usually there's a readjustment that has to take place after a franchise returns after even a year or two. Character designs are slightly different, the pacing feels different, sometimes it feels like the voice actors are trying too hard. That everything feels so natural after being gone for ages when it comes to entertainment is quite a feat.
I'm just as in love with Amelia as I was after the first season.

I'm glad the new series looks like something that old time Slayers fans will enjoy. I've been looking forward to Funimation's release. Like the other posters stated, I'm really happy Funimation was able to reunite the old dubbing cast.

I'm happy that they like the dub so much, especially since I watched the subs on Funimation's website and loved the Japanese performance as much as I loved the English dub for the old series.

TRIVIA: Parallels have been drawn between the main characters and the classic roleplayer archetypes.
The Real Man: Gourry
The Real Roleplayer: Zelgadis
The Loony: Amelia
The Munchkin: Lina

I have one question for Carl: Why only review the first eps, instead of waiting for the release?
I mean great reviews as always, but it should've been concentrated on the entire series. Just sayin...
Overall, Carl had the right train of thought: Slayers is just fun. Plain and simple. No brain, all heart, fun.
This review reminded me of his Druaga review, in that both series have a feel-good sensation and are great, if not excellent ways to pass the time!

...has it not been clear that we do reviews in chunks of streaming shows and then also do the box set if and when it comes out?
Obviously there will be another review when the box comes out. There's room for both.

I'm a casual fan of the movies; the humor is too bizarre, outrageous and genuinely hilarious for me to not like them. Now seeing and being surprised by how witty and clever this series really is, I'm thinking of checking the original classic series now. It's really interesting when Funimation tries getting the original dub cast to come back like they did with the 3rd Tenchi OVA series, it must especially be interesting for the dub actors to come back and reprise their roles after so long.

She gets a ton of fanservice shots in these last seasons.

Silly, unpretentious, meandering, shallow and entertaining as hell? Yep, that's Slayers, all right.

I know, I was actually kind of surprised because other than Naga, fanservice was never a big component, really. "Lina has no breasts" jokes, sure, but not necessarily straight up fanservice.
I love her more for her indomitable sense of fiery justice than her obvious cuteness. She, Zelgadis, and Xelloss are really the core of the show for me.
I'm actually really lukewarm on the OAVs and movies but thoroughly enjoyed all of the series. And I'm probably one of the few people on the planet that simultaneously likes Martina and dislikes Naga.

Gourry is the default hero in many of the RPG's during the 80's and 90's. He's the typical legend complete with typical the sword of light. Lina is the mysteriously overleveled blackmage, with the cheesy high collar and 90's style pauldrons, who just so happens to wield the infamous (and quite possibly world ending) DragonSlave. Amelia is the Ganbatte! tomboy princess that oddly enough wants to destroy evil and save her kingdom, with her awesome fists of justice. Zelgadis Is the angsty support character with the tragic past. Jack of all trades and master of none. Tricked, cursed and enemy turned ally, Zelgadis turned out to be one of my favorite characters.

I know what you mean. Amelia is hilarious for her sense of justice, the fanservice doesn't fit. Trust me, I love fanservice, but to me, Amelia was anything but sexual.
She has a tentacle scene. Had to happen sometime, I guess.

Oh come on Zac! You don't have to be a stickler for correctness! I "know" you guys can review whatever you want, "whenever" you want (Aria the Natural's 2nd boxset is proof of whenever...), but why waste the effort?
No need to review something twice. Either Carl is a huge fan, and REALLY wanted to let it out, or it was something to do. I don't personally care. Heck, I love Carl's insights! His and Key's reviews are some of the "key" reasons I like ANN!

I see this review as a way to hype up the release a few weeks in advance. There is nothing wrong with it.
