Wow, although that takes a ton of guts, considering how she defined otaku, I am slightly annoyed.
My reason? Your average American who doesn't know anything might get the misconception that anime otaku are those who are people who do nothing but watch "cartoons" and are weird.
Maybe I am wrong, but anime hasn't always had the most postive image. Especially because of over the top violent/moe shows and H games.

Last week, Scrubs said something about hentai. I think Elliot said she had a phase where she watched cartoon porn. (or something on that line)
I thought the 30 Rock thing was funny. I mean yes it showed some parts of the fandom that really shouldn't be shown on prime time t.v. But it was pulled off well and I laughed when I saw the episode.
Though the American Idol thing was just a bad Naruto fan thinking that would be a hit in Japan. Really you had to use the word otaku just because your a Naruto fan?

30 Rock wins for James Franco saying "moe".
I do appreciate the AI girl NOT singing an anime song though.

No, it's because she's an otaku. It's not something to be proud of.

30 Rock convinced me to start watching again with that line alone.
On the other hand, the otaku girl should have introduced herself as a weeaboo because that's what she is. The sad part is she looks dead serious about it. If she wasn't serious she would have sung a song from Naruto or something.

Hmmm.... Maybe that anime explosion of the 90's is making it's way back A whole new decade and era is here. Who knows what can/will happen?
Edit: That is NOT an otaku. That, my friend, is a piece of Wapanese weeaboo trash. Sorry to come off so mean, but it's true.

Still, why use the word otaku? I mean yes the word is something you don't want to call your self after you figure out thats it's a bad thing. I mean there's a bunch of other things they could have said, like just say anime fan, or I have a big interest in Japanese culture.
Anything else that doesn't sound weeaboo-ish.

I <3 James Franco even more now. Did not think that was possible.
And man, I saw that Naruto girl on American Idol and while she was annoying for her definition of the word Otaku, I don't know, I don't think she ruined it for everyone. People will think that she's a dork and nothing of the preconception of otaku will change because of it. I kind of feel sorry for her a little bit, 4chan got a hold of her Deviant Art account and Youtube page and bombed the hell out of it.
Anyone being squeemish about the 30 Rock episode just needs to be less uptight really. That part of the otaku fandom is not something meant to be taken seriously and definitely doesn't define the whole. It's pretty much taken the same way as those people that get Star Trek/Wars marriages.

Well, I'm personaly proud of that otaku who went on American Idol, atleast with her showing her love of anime on an American based show. I know not many anime fans define themselves in public as "otakus", last time I checked I was one of the few people that did by atleast mentioning the word.
Cus we all know that anime has been getting some bad reputation in past years, especaily with the whole "Kids-with-Death-Notes" and other stuff that's been hurting anime's rep.
I know she kinda gave us otakus, weather we admit we're otakus or not, a bad-rep, but heck we're unque indivduals who like what we like, and alot of us are dang proud of it too.

I just pray that there will be an anime explosion. It would make me feel that anime and manga would be more accepted by people.

They did all that stuff to her? Pretty sad, but she asked for it. I probably wouldn't have hated her if she sang something like Lonely Sunset or Soba ni Ite. I mean for sure she must have at least some Japanese speaking abilities if she's that in deep in "otaku culture (ugh)".

I don't think that girls on American Idol are going to do anime fans any good. I really don't see an anime explosion ever happening again. The curiosity and marketing just isn't there I believe.

Ya the 4chan stuff was all over the place earlier in the week.
I mean sad really but, it's a given that if you do something like that, 4chan is bound to find anything and spam the crap out of it. (sorry about my use of swearing but it fits for what I said)
I know I shouldn't laugh at the pain of others but some of the signs and other stuff people edited for the American idol deal was funny.

Well, I can't disagree with you on that. Cus now America is even farther into debt than ever before. And now beacause of all thoughs things that have happened beacause of anime in past years.

I watched American Idol and that girl looked like an idiot. I would never associate myself with someone who acted like that. No wonder people look down on others who watch anime.

HaHa!!! Yes, I'm pretty sure she does speak a little. Wouldn't be surprised if she's even taken some courses. The old days of weeaboo fangirls having 10 word Japanese vocabs are gone. The insanity of it all is: she could stroll on over to Nico Nico, post a vid of her singing/dancing to some hit J-pop record, generate a bajillion views, get signed and be on the top of Oricon by this summer.
