Section 9, Ghost in the Shell franchise vs. Straw Hat Pirates, One Piece Voting for: Section 9 Because: I think people are being a little too harsh on the Straw Hat Pirates. They are as successful as they are because they have each other for support. The various members bring important and diverse skills to their dangerous expedition: navigator, doctor, cook, etc. They build strong bonds over the course of their journey, and while Luffy is often the one to save the day, he is not infallible, and on at least a couple occasions he is saved by his crew. Ultimately, however, they lose out because they fight as individuals. I feel bad penalizing them for what is essentially a genre trope, but at this point of the tournament, that's where the difference lies. Section 9 works in precise synchronization while the Straw Hats go man-to-man. While the latter still require the trust that everyone does their part in order to achieve the necessary goals, it is just incapable of matching the level of coordination of the former. Groups C/D Semifinals MITHRIL, Full Metal Panic! franchise vs. Debris Section, Planetes Voting for: MITHRIL Because: I feel that while they were all together Debris Section is the better group, the departure of a certain member in the later part of the series hurts them drastically. It's not an outright betrayal, but it is a serious blow to their merits in terms of dynamic, and to a lesser degree, their effectiveness. MITHRIL, on the large scale, has some drawbacks, but they do better overcoming then in the end, whereas Debris Section never completely re-formed. |

Section 9, Ghost in the Shell franchise vs. Straw Hat Pirates, One Piece How you vote, between these two, depends a lot on how touchy you are about anime being taken seriously. If you are embarrassed easily, then Section 9 is the only choice here. It's hard to take One Piece seriously, with all the weird goings-on (zombie penguins, oh yes), but it's still a tale with a solid backbone of moral and philosophical issues. To the casual viewer, these may drown in the madcap antics of the huge character list, but they are there nonetheless -- and central to the "heavy stuff" in OP is the nature of the team and its team spirit. I've already spoken of the excellence and hard-bitten competence of Section 9, so I won't go into that -- but I will state that these two teams are completely evenly matched. That being the case, I will vote for the Straw Hat Pirates, to even things out a little. Either one of these teams deserves to go on, equally -- and will easily beat the opposition, so we're picking the winner here. Groups C/D Semifinals MITHRIL, Full Metal Panic! franchise vs. Debris Section, Planetes Both slightly flawed teams, but I think MITHRIL have the best record of competence and coherence. They get my vote. - abunai |

Ya know, I'm very much in agreement with Abunai here. I stated earlier that SHP are pretty much the polar opposite of S9. But at the same time, they remain a veritable force of a team who deserve their place as S9's rivals.
I was hoping this match-up would turn out to be epic like much of One Piece, but it disappointingly didn't. So, A/B semis, voting: Straw Hat Pirates. As much of a staunch believer in Ghost in the Shell as I am, I won't deny the SHP is a marvelous team. I do think S9 has the edge, but I'll favor the SHP here so as not to see them steamrolled by too much. C/D semis: Chidori ~~~n! *cough* I -- I mean MITHRIL! |

Section 9, Ghost in the Shell franchise vs. Straw Hat Pirates, One Piece While I am not completely surprised that Section 9 has a substantial lead, I will also favor the Straw Hat Pirates to even things out a bit. I feel that the Straw Hats care for each other a lot more than Section 9, which while a powerhouse lacks the warmth and strong sense of reliance present in the SHP. Both of these teams deserve to move on though, and I think its safe to say that they are the two strongest teams in this tournament. Groups C/D Semifinals MITHRIL, Full Metal Panic! franchise vs. Debris Section, Planetes MITHRIL is the clear winner. They never fragment like the Debris Section, and I feel that are more coordinated and far more competent. Unfortunately, both of these teams are weak enough to be steamrolled by whoever wins the SHP and S9 match. |

Section 9, Ghost in the Shell franchise vs. Straw Hat Pirates, One Piece Straw Hat Pirates. Not out of pity nor because I don't want to see Section 9 winning with a crushing score. I do believe that the SHP are a better team because they certainly are the best when it comes to friendship and bonds, though Section 9 certainly is good at things, just like a "Jack of all trades", but they are the best at nothing; nothing but a mere well balanced team in my view. Therefore this is my vote, even though it won't affect the outcome. Groups C/D Semifinals MITHRIL, Full Metal Panic! franchise vs. Debris Section, Planetes MITHRIL. I haven't seen Planetes, but I've heard about a few occurrences that did affect the team, so I'll go with Mithril's somewhat solid organization, which isn't perfect by the way. |

Section 9, Ghost in the Shell franchise vs. Straw Hat Pirates, One Piece Section 9. Straw Hat Pirates sound worthy enough, but I'm as of yet still not familiar with their series and the arguments levied against Section 9 seem far too feeble to make me vote against them. Groups C/D Semifinals MITHRIL, Full Metal Panic! franchise vs. Debris Section, Planetes MITHRIL. Like has been said before, Debris Section just shouldn't have made it this far, so MITHRIL wins almost by default. |

Voting for: Section 9, Ghost in the Shell franchise Reason: Teamwork. Each member has as role to play in every mission, and their specialities contribute to the unit's success Groups C/D Semifinals Voting for: MITHRIL, Full Metal Panic! franchise Reason: Both organizations seem flawed, but MITHRIL seems less so. Despite the occasional double-agent infiltrating the group, MITHRIL gets the job done efficiently and effectively. |

Section 9, Ghost in the Shell franchise vs. Straw Hat Pirates, One Piece Voting for: Section 9. I usually tend to favor teams with profiles roughly similar to that of the Straw Hats, give or take a few exceptions, but things are going to be different this time around. In the end, ccdx has presented a fairly detailed overview of both contenders and Section 9 ultimately comes out ahead thanks to their greater degree of coordination and cooperation while still having more characterization on their side than, say, Hotel Moscow ever did. Groups C/D Semifinals MITHRIL, Full Metal Panic! franchise vs. Debris Section, Planetes Voting for: Debris Section. I like both, in spite of the fact they've been considered weak by previous voters...but while neither of them have much of a chance given the understandable numbers of Section 9 supporters, this time around I believe the Debris Section is being dismissed far too easily. Why? Well, when a member or two of the team leaves, particularly if it's happening on generally good terms, that doesn't necessarily mean we're seeing a breakdown of their internal dynamics. If anything, I'd say that can ultimately end up being a sign of positive character progression despite a few rough spots here and there. Though fiction sometimes argues otherwise, taking up another job opportunity can be a perfectly valid step forward in someone's career, not an actual "betrayal" of their preexisting affiliation nor a real "failure" for the team. |

Section 9, Ghost in the Shell franchise vs. Straw Hat Pirates, One Piece Straw Hat Pirates. It's no surprise that I picked Section 9 to win it all on my bracket, but I still feel that the Straw Hats are the slightly stronger team. While they may be slightly less coordinated, I feel that they rely on each other much than the members of Section 9. The intense emotional bonds present in Straw Hats are simply not found in Section 9. I wouldn't be disappointed if Section 9 won, but I am a little surprised that Section 9 winning is being hailed as a self-fulfilling prophecy. Groups C/D Semifinals MITHRIL, Full Metal Panic! franchise vs. Debris Section, Planetes Debris Section. While I don't believe that either of these teams can beat Section 9 or the Straw Hats, Debris Section is devoid of a bit the shady dealings and double agent activity found in MITHRIL. Debris Section has character development, teamwork, and individual character growth in aces, but they fall short when one of their key members decides to go their separate way. |

Tournament Semifinals are now closed.
The results should be obvious. Out of 21 votes, Section 9 takes out the pirates 15-6, while MITHRIL notches an even more impressive 16-5 victory. Due to a not-entirely-unexpected time crunch, I am not going to be able to set up and start the next round until at least mid-afternoon Tuesday (American EST), as certain parts of it I cannot do while at work. Because of that, I will allow an extra day for voting if it looks like the Finals is close. (I'll be a little surprised if it's not a blow-out, though.) |

So, apparently I made a little mix-up in the scoring last round, and swapped guet and dtm's points earned, which means guet should have been listed as 4th and dtm as 6th. It's been fixed now.
So, results. Most people correctly predicted Section 9 would move on, and no one expected MITHRIL to do so (Debris Section only had 1 person expecting them to make it to the final). |

Round 7: Tournament Final is now open!
And so we come down to to just two. This one is for all of the marbles, folks! And apologies for the delay. As previously stated, if the match is still close (i.e. the leader has less than 2/3 of the votes) at the end of the day on Monday then I will extend the voting until the end of the day on Tuesday. (Both GMT-5) Finals Section 9, Ghost in the Shell franchise vs. MITHRIL, Full Metal Panic! franchise |

First! haha.
But seriously I'm voting for Section 9.. I think we pretty much knew it would come to this after the Game Club got shot down in flames, or at least I suspected it would. MITHRIL has too many issues as have already been discussed, whereas Section 9 truly does perform with military precision in every operation and have very few flaws overall. They're gonna take this easy. |

And now all those who haven't voted since forever will come and participate.
I vote for Section 9. Surprise surprise. This battle shouldn't even be close. At this stage in the tournament, ALL negatives must be taken into account. MITHRIL is not just Sousuke and Friends, it is a large paramilitary organisation, one that suffers at least two important betrayals that I can think of off the top of my head. That fact alone would mean my voting against them, and so I shall. I won't even begin to consider anything else about either team until someone can address this point in favour of MITHRIL. I assume someone will; how else did such a weak organisation get this far if not for having die-hard fans? |
