Yeah, a guy on the I.G. forums said Sony's gonna release a cut version for general audiences and the complete version for fans. Though seeing the trailers for Steamboy doesn't make me think of it as a general audience movie.

Perhaps they mean "general audiences" as distinct from anime fans, who typically demand uncut anime. Personally, I'm glad to hear of this. Most Americans simply aren't used to anime's peculiar milieu, and I'd rather they at least get some exposure to mind-expanding anime, even if it's in an edited form. I don't think we should expect a Joe-on-the-street to "get" anime. |

The real problem is that the dub/butcher print will be default, and a theater will have to SPECIALLY REQUEST the sub print.
Of course what do I care? They won't show it here in Philly anyway |

Y'know, I'd love to see you go up to an ADR director and tell him/her dubs are inherently butcher jobs. Anyway, we already know how you feel--no need to bring it up every time that three-letter word creeps into a thread.
I wouldn't go that far. Sure, some films are probably a bit too different to catch many people's attention, but there's too much variety in anime to discount it all. As for Steamboy, dunno. I can't say much until I've seen it. |

It said right up at the top that the dub print has been edited, therefore butchered. It is not the director's original vision, and is therefore wrong before the language issue even enters the picture.
Been there, done that. Bought the T-shirt. "Actors", ADR directors, pretty much everyone involved. |

Not all editing is "butchering." I certainly wouldn't go so far as saying that when these changes are made often with creator concent and always under a binding contract. Don't like them, that's fine, but you've got to take it up with the Japanese industry that allows it just as much as the American industry that does it.

Why do you think so many HK studios now either refuse to work with Miramax, or insist on binding contracts? The creator's vision is what is important, no one should be allowed to compromise that for any reason, especially for the purpose of dumbing down, which is the stated reason behind 90% of non-television edits for foreign films, (my words) "So it'll play better in Peoria" |

The author's intention is not being analyzed. Simply stated, the version originally released is the definative version UNLESS THE AUTHOR STATES OTHERWISE(For example, Pierre Boulle wished he'd thought of blowing up the bridge at the end of River Kwai, thereby making it an authorized, and even preferred change). No changes should be made whatsoever from that version in any form. Period. The author of the piece is the ultimate authority, and unless it is blessed by said author, any change must be assumed to be unauthorized, and therefore wrong. That's simple logic. We're not second guessing people's artistic intent, or going by personal . Simply advocating keeping the original work intact. |
