BR sequel didn't make money? Really?
Well, it is safe to say GANTZ will make money even without the controversy since the story and concept is good enough, it can live without. Its an adaptation afterall.

I still want the shocking elements of the original in the adaptation. That would be soo frikin cool. Wonder if there'll be a director's cut version with additional x-rated scenes.

Actually no, what happened is that the first BR was good, and the second one was terrible.

Hopefully this means the rebirth of the anime.

I don't know, they'd either have to restart it from scratch or pretend that stupid final arc from the TV series didn't happen. Maybe they could say it was just a nightmare Kurono had.

Man I also wished they would continue the anime instead, sans the last episode that gave it a fake ending, going into the nature of the game, what happens when you do get enough points, other newcomers, etc. and finally finishing the series, maybe in another 26 or even 52 episodes. There's no way just 2 movies can do the entire Gantz manga justice.
I agree. I'd rather another anime series over live action.

This can't actually be happening, can it?

With the quality of some of today's Japanese cinema, this might actually be good. There will have to be some good special effects for it to work well thought, because GANTZ has all sorts of crazy sci-fi things. Futuristic energy weapons, Matrix-stlye feats of impossible strength and speed, cloaking devices, etc...

I wonder if it'll have characters from the manga or if they'll be making up a new GANTZ story. And yes, to live up to its name a GANTZ movie will have to have a pretty high level of violence.

With this, my second favorite manga will be in live action. My first favorite already got several movies (Death Note). Now I can only hope that we go on a roll and get a live action movie for my third favorite manga, Gunmm (Battle Angel Alita). I know James Cameron keeps talking about it, but as usual I'm skeptical it'll actually happen.

If Nino's in it, I just might have to watch it. He's a good choice, since he can actually act...
Wow... yeah, this is what has me sort of torn. I watched the first handful of Gantz episodes and knew it was absolutely not something I'd like. So normally a live-action of it would not interest me in the least. But Ninomiya, really? I always imagine him as a basically kind, likeable guy, like his character in Stand Up!! for example. Well, either way I'm sure it'll be somewhat toned-down from the anime, as I really doubt any Johnnys performer would be allowed to act in anything terribly graphic-- so maybe I'll give it a go.

The main participants are now college students. Maybe that will allow the violence in but it does dull the whole high school and teen environ violence theme that permeated GANTZ imo.

http://mainichi.jp/enta/cinema/news/20091007mog00m200064000c.html
Quote:
google translate:
This time, the man who played for refraction Ninomiya says "I am happy just loves to be out of work. This work is foolish and arrogant of humans to me (arrogant) told me the part. To make a shadow of light Instead of that there is a desire to create an optical shadow. and I love creating a contradiction. ... The Maniac In a nutshell Maa (laughter), "he said.

Which sounds more clever than "YEY! I'm so happy to be in this project! YEY!" like in the 4th update of the article. I would love a proper translation of the article if possible.

Here's an official NTV's english article on Gantz the movie
http://www.ntv.co.jp/english/an/06pr/09/20091008.html

They already made clear it will be targeted for general viewing with focus on the psychological aspect of survival in a war so don't expect any porn to be included. There will be blood and death but no boobies ... though Sponichi did highlight about "hooters", so keep your fingers-crossed.

i don't know whether to rejoice or be upset or angry by this news.

on the one hand, it'll be nice to have more of gantz especially after the horrible way the anime ended. they might have learnt from it and the movie might be better.

but gantz has a lot of violent and bloody scenes not to mention the erotic ones. if a lot of them were removed, as they might have to be if it's to be targeted for a general audience, gantz would not be gantz anymore. and i can't imagine how they're going to portray the weapons and equipments in gantz. it would suck to have all of them CG-d and like p3rseus said,

I remember seeing Ryuk in the Death Note live action and how it didn't look realistic or even good enough to be believable. Hopefully they've improved.

... That has to be the worst advertisement I've ever seen ~_~;; I can understand not wanting to show too much given how early it is, but it basically shows nothing at all.

And the Kishimoto actress needs moar bewbs >.>;; Her overly voluptous figure is one of the defining traits of the character and greatly influenced how other characters viewed/treated her. If her sizable endowments had no bearing on her relationships with others, then it wouldn't be an issue for me, but in this case, they should have found a girl who fit the image a bit better. spoiler[Especially since in this story, they go a bit further than typical manga/anime where even 13yo girls have D-cups and everyone just takes it for granted or drools a lil'] Give her some pads and a body double for any risque scenes though and it should work out fine. Anime hyper

It's got the budget, some actors known to produce good work, and awesome source material so I am looking forward to it. ^^
But does anyone know what "general audience" means here exactly? I could take it as aiming for the equivalent of PG-13 (for the widest audience) or staying true to the source but not be so graphic that it gets NC-17 (general public not being into pure gore-fests or porn.) spoiler[The bump to characters' ages would also make nudity more acceptable internationally if they choose to include it.]

My money is on #1 covering 1st phase and #2 covering 2nd phase of the manga.[/spoiler]
