two words: Water Intoxication
I accept the concept of writing an angry letter but never sending as a good method for some people to blow off steam and frustrations or, like hussar67 said, just saying "i wish so and so would just die" is one thing and are usually done during emotional moments. Unless you have to do it on a "normal bases"; then you got something else...
But making something that equates to a hit list is a much more calculated, sometimes detailed matter. I think that's what bothers most people and why some find it hard to associated with Therapeutic writing. Even I support the possible therapy behind it but really the hitlist aspect of it all is a bit too far for me. At least angry letters, music, or art promotes a bit of creativity and possibly leads to new healthy outlets. But hitlist style... yeah not something I would promote.
At the same time though most of these people are young so they might not fully grasp the nuiances of it all or just don't like writing or typing that much. Of course making "plans" for this stuff makes it easier to point out the kids with problems, and the ones just venting in a less then appropriate manner.

Actually, the mangaka has already stated that Ryuk was lying about that IIRC. |
Really? In the character book the author said the point was that there is nothing after this life-no heaven nor hell, just nothingness (so grab all the gusto you can this time around). I thought the comment was even no reincarnation. The author thought all these wish-the-hero-back shonen revival things were just wrong-dead is dead. (So maybe DN came about after the author read one too many brought back hero titles). However in that novel Viz released, there's obviously something considering who the narrator of the story is.
Quote: | It's possible to make someone drink himself/herself to death. Now I won't say how... |
I don't think the point was one can't die from drinking too much (one can die from drinking too much water even), but that making one drink oneself to death short of having a gun at their head is impossible. Of course, if the drinker loses control while drinking, it would be possible to keep the drinks flowing until the drinker passes out, but short of said gun/knife/death device or an IV pumping it directly in, drinking oneself to death is a self-inflicted situation.
If the kid were just dreaming, it's not a problem. Writing stories killing off one's enemies is one thing, but the bomb bit is indicative of a need for counseling.

It's very easy to setup with the right equipment imo. (You're only talking about 9-10 drinks.) No need for gun, knife, death device or IV. So the possibility still exists and some worry from school officials.

I thought the point was that you can't make somebody else drink themselves to death. Its not like planting a bomb nearby them, or shooting them. You can't just say, 'here, drink yourself to death!' or whatever. I guess you could like tie them up or something, but then they wouldn't really be drinking themselves to death. You would be doing it for them.

I just have to say that writing up a detailed list of people to die, how they are going to die, and where the bombs are going to be placed is either a serious worry, or the stupidity of some random kid. Funny thing is that a 'death list' (not Death Note specifically) appeared during my 8th school year. But honestly, more of this Death Note drama?
I understand that it's bad to scapegoat the source material even though it may have influenced the student's thoughts, but that doesn't mean that this should go unchecked. Well that's my two cents, it's still a freaking death/hit list even without the Death Note title

These are basically hit lists and schools can't take them lightly anymore for obvious reasons. For a list of names and a title but no details the kid should just be given a day of in school, spent talking to the counselor going over why it is inappropriate to have in school. For what this kid did he needs to be taken out of school and not let back in till he has been cleared by a Psychiatrist as not being a threat to others. If you are talking about bombing buildings and detailed deaths you either have a sick sense of humor or have some mental issues that need to be looked at.

This just makes me roll over laughing...
Guess it won't be long until the so called human "evolution" turns into a "devolution", considering the kids nowadays.
A serious matter indeed, funny indeed...
After all, I'm just one of those who don't care about the future.
Where to buy this note? I'll get one and write Osama's name and see if the most wanted terrorist in the human history would miraculously/ironically die.

Don't misuse the term "evolution".

Doesn't every kid know that writing notes about threats will get them in trouble in school, anyway? Maybe it's just me, as my middle school was getting a bunch of bomb threats each year (though that was probably some idiot who thought getting out of class and standing outside in late fall was fun). Everyone was always pretty mad at whoever did it (we never found out, so it was just "man, I can't believe that a person would do this!"), not overjoyed, and the school system warned that the ones making threats would be in trouble with the law.
Still, schools just can't take these things lightly. Not these days, anyway. And especially when the student was writing down plans on how to blow up a school. It's not so much that people think that a death god is going to show up and that there's a supernatural force that will kill someone, but that it may just be a guise, concealing true intent with a fictional story, and that the kid has serious mental issues. Honestly, I think this kid seriously needs some help. The other cases weren't good at all, but at least they never wrote about bombings. I think there is a difference between writing to relieve stress and writing a notebook of names of people you want dead (in terms of Death Note, it's actually a person killing another through supernatural means). When I'm stressed or angry, I write out my emotions in fictional stories, but not anything like glorifying killing.
For people who think it's stupid to get in trouble for something like this, as yourself: If there was a chance to prevent a school shooting/bombing/death, wouldn't you take it? Whether it's a guise or someone with issues, the fact is that they brought a list of people they wanted dead to school and wrote down plans to use bombs.

Don't abuse quote. Why would you quote a 5 line post that's just above yours to say 5 words?
And who are you to tell me what to do? I didn't know sarcasm wasn't allowed here.
Sorry, but if you don't explain things clearly that's what you get.
