I have a question. I just got into a very annoying argument with a friend of mine about anime. The argument was why isn't anime released in 3D?
By 3D I mean the type of 3D in theaters with the glasses.
My stance is that 3D adds nothing valuable to anime. I am a bit of a purist and believe anime should be done with Cels and paint, but that's beside this argument. Anime is already chaotic enough nowadays and its not practical outside of movie theaters where you use the glasses and then toss them out. You don't see movies in the US released on DVD with 3D glasses, aside from maybe 1 or 2 instances.
Her stance was well I'm not really sure. Thoughts please.
Should anime be sold on DVD in stores with 3D glasses? Requiring you to watch them with glasses? Would studios have to make both 3D and non 3D versions of the anime, requiring them to spend more money in the process?

In a practical sense, it would add too much extra expense to make it 3D, and I question how much it would contribute to a production anyway beyond being a flashy gimmick.

To make 3D live action films you basically need two cameras so you're just doubling your initial setup cost and media storage.
For CG animation you just need to render everything twice from two virtual camera positions so all it takes is extra computing time and storage.
For non-CG anime the difficulty would have to be immense as you have no camera to move so you would have to work out the angles manually for each frame. The foreground would have to be drawn twice, almost exactly the same, or more likely all elements drawn individually and moved around to simulate parallax which would still be time consuming in terms of composition and the characters themselves would all still be 2D.

Just a quick question here, were those final fantasy movies 3D anime? I mean, yes they were 3D, but were they anime?

Yes.
This thread reminded me of that new movie, Hottarake no Shima. That film looks AMAZING. I'm surprised there isn't more buzz about it.
When CGI anime is done right, it WORKS. And looks AMAZING.

Well, there's also that new Astroboy movie coming out. Could that be called anime even though it's being made by Westerns?
Not looking forward to it though. I'm surprised that a western company would pick up this concept; I didn't think Astroboy had enough brand power here in America.

In one book Frederick L Schodt, he says that a lot of people in the 60's and 70's really enjoyed the Astro Boy and Kimba anime..not knowing it was from Japan.
Of course that was quite a long time ago!

They're not 3-D in the sense that the TC is using the word. TC is using the word to mean a 3-D effect created by showing superimposed, differently colored, and slightly differently drawn images and filtering the images using colored lenses in order to perceive a flat object as 3-D. You're using the word to mean polygon rendered graphics. The effects are quite different, as it is easy to tell that a polygon rendered image is being displayed on a flat screen.

I think maybe they're hoping for the nostalgia factor to have parents/grandparents bringing kids in to see it- I know I turned on AS marathon of the original black and white Astroboy one New Year's, just becuase I'd never seen it- not only did both my parents recognize it in an instant, my mom even remembered the specific episode being aired.

I don't remember any Final Fantasy being made in 3D, unless I'm gravely mistaken I think the OP was referring to the sort of 3D you have to wear the fruity glasses to make work. The Final Fantasy sort is CG or at least that's how I've always separated them.
Personally I don't see either amazing pop-out graphics 3D being particularly beneficial to the industry, I mean knowing how anime works you can bet the majority of it would be used on skirt effects or breasts.
Given that the OP was referring to the CG type, I've only seen it done well in games and Advent Children. If you can pull off that caliber every time, then more power to ya. However I must admit, that I found Advent Children and to a lesser extent the Appleseed movies and other CG anime feeling less like watching anime and more like watching an extended cutscene for a game or something. Which just isn't what I'm looking to do with an anime and probably why I find anime based on games so boring. But that's just my personal opinion, if you don't mind that or don't get that feeling then good for you, but it's not something I'd like to start seeing in anime anytime soon.
