I just finished brigadoon last night. Yes I know it's been out for a long while but this is on my list of really good anime.
I thought in the first few episodes I thought "aw this is just your monster of the day show with a nerd chick and a human super digimon like things! Ampules! What tha pokemon! mhahahahahahahahaha!" I was super wrong. This is really cool to marathon. Marin the leading lady is a bit charismatic and a loveable character because throughout the series you just want to take her out the TV and hug her. She has a hard knock life being an orphan but is still a happy responsible child with a great big imagination. The anime shows several scene with whats going on in her head which is funny. Melan the leading guy is a Gunswordsman. The source of all the action in this anime. He's sent to protect Marin from the world brigadoon. Many monsters called monomakia constantly tries to kill marin to stop the day of pasca on brigadoon. This anime has comedy, loads of action (that gets really bloody later on) and some love and friendship. Drama is heavy later on because so much bad stuff keeps happening to this girl and Melan.spoiler[ its starts small like being made fun of at school. then the cops hate her since she brings the monomakia. Her grandma dies, the world is crashing! (literally) she goes blind due to a accident, the entire world hates her presence, her classmate tries to kill her, a mother tries to kill her, she almost dies or get seriously injured so much it rivals kenny of south park and she's poor. ] Those events and the character really made me tune in every week. But thanks to the family like people at the tenement and Melan she gets through it all. The tenement folks are really good side people. My faves are jun and mike. Then ending seemed spoiler[a bit deus ex machina the way everything was quickly solved and explaination was rushed in the last 15 minutes of episode 26] but that just might be me. And the spoiler[kisses between melan and marin was cute but it felt weird because she looks so young and melan is so adult looking. but he's not human so its whatever to me. ] The story style reminded me of shadowstar narutaru when it starts all cute and nice then gets more and more effed up on the way but unlike that its ends pretty happy and wrapped like a present. I gave it a see on VOD but now im going to give it a buy. (sorry if this is a lot to read but I needed to gush about this! ![]() |

I just saw the ending. I also kinda thought it was kinda rushed at the end of episode 26.
But I loved it. ![]() But I was kinda confused, im not sure if this counts as a spoiler or not but ill just put a spoiler tag on it just in case spoiler[ I was kinda confused if he ended up staying with her or not. it didn't really say, all you see is them flying around...] I think its safe to say he did, but not 100% sure. & I loved how spoiler[ they kissed!! ] loved the anime ![]() |

The anime felt so..off, to me. It's horribly bloody and dramatic at later parts, and the animation style is a complete opposite of that. I didn't find it weird "f'd up" like Eva, or insane weird like flcl or excel saga..it just had it's own category of weirdness.
It's like watching a tom and jerry cartoon where tom catches jerry, and then skins him alive and boils him. You know that it should be child like comedy and humor, but it's not what you're seeing. It wasn't just the animation either...I don't know. spoiler[And there were some pseudo weird sexual things going on or what? With her little turtle thing and how she drove it.] Been well over a year since I've seen it and I just didn't know what to think of it after it ended. I think I rated it a good, so 7/10 on my list. Some good fighting, drama and development but I just couldn't really put my finger on what this was all about. |

I thought the animation compared with the plot was fiting until the episode when spoiler[granny died] and after that all the effed up stuff began. Its hard to pinpoint a style it should have because im so used to this one. spoiler[i didn't think anything sexual when she drove the turtle. i just instantly thought ATARI. ] BTW...I WANT to see that Tom and Jerry if it ever gets made. mhahahahaha! |

Yes the beginning was kind of kiddy with the whole "kid finds a big cool robot" but as you said...when the drama starts occuring, the super bright colors and young round drawing of people...just didn't fit.
And I'm sure that thing has happened on itchy and scratchy before, the simpsons bloody copy cat of tom and jerry. |

Just finished watching it.
I agree with your comments that it's very difficult to put it into a category, since it doesn't seem to fit any. If you watch only the first half of the series you'd go thinking "Aw geez another Sailormoon/Card Captor/Pokemon spinoff". But if you watch only the latter half of the series you'd go "WTF is this series why the hell's everyone dying??" But I think that's the reason why I loved it, because it's so unpredictable; it's like you're watching a soap opera, you get to a scene where somebody dies and everyone's really crying, and then someone comes up behind you and smacks you upside the head. It's never too sad and never too cutesy. You can't categorize it. You'll fail. Like that episode spoiler[ where the enemy beats Melan half-dead and takes him to Brigadoon. Since Marin was blind, all she could hear was Melan being beaten up, and all she can do is cry. The atmosphere was so sad and heavy-- then in the next scene Marin sees Melan, Pyon and Erin being judged for their crimes, and they are..... all turned into small pigs. ] I know it's not a very popular series [when you search google for it, you'll get a Musical 95% of the time.] But nonetheless... I love it to bits. I think I agree with the TS. ![]() |

Oh, an old topic dug up for a series I had on my Otakon wish list (and actually managed to get there too). This was actually the first of the things I finished from my Otakon haul because I was honestly expecting something a bit calmer and cutesier, I had read the two volume manga ages ago and was expecting more of the same from this (and to be fair, for the first half of the series or so it really was), but then about halfway through, it just dropped the cutesy charade and just did one of the most depressing things I've ever seen done to any anime character ever. In fact, the cutesy of it may have made the depressing parts even more depressing.
The most depressing thing to happen in the first half was spoiler[the sudden passing of her beloved grandma], which is something I could have easily forgiven as mildly depressing and not a sign that things would only get worse for Marin. Then, a few episodes later and within two episodes,Marin: 1) spoiler[returns to find her house burned down] 2) spoiler[loses her eye sight] 3) spoiler[is almost killed by the crazy psycho woman whom I never thought I'd see again from earlier in the show (while Marin is blind)] 4) spoiler[is almost killed by a jerk classmate who hates her when Marin kindly asks her to take her back to someplace safe, she gets led off a broken overpass above the freeway (while Marin is still blind)] yes, #4 did end up in something positive, but I could hardly believe the series did that! And not to mention how addictive I found the opening song, even if the action in the back was a tad plain in the back of the song, but I brought the series with me to school to rewatch it at some point. One thing that was always inadvertently funny to me was the best friend's name, Moe, due to the current meaning of the word that wouldn't have quite been there when the show was made in 2000 (her moe look didn't help her cause), so even during these super serious scene where spoiler[Marin and Melan are about to be forced to kill Moe], her name it, just...the double meaning really made things funnier then they were supposed to be. But part of what I liked about the series was how the second half was so incredibly depressing while the first half only hinted at it. I actually really liked the character deigns and artwork and in particular how it gave no indication to the actual nature of the show (it reminded me a bit of Fantastic Children in that way). |

i liked the show, but i hated the ending. spoiler[i didn't like how this whole deep story they crafted was wiped away in the matter of a few minutes] also the pedophilic overtones got creepy really quick. what i did love about this series however, is the human aspect. unlike other shounen series, you actually got to see the consequences of the hero just running around the city destroying things.

Ah.... I knew I'd hear the 'pedophilic' line sooner or later.
"Pedophilia" is an adult's sexual preference for prepubescent children. I am sure you'd agree that the term could not be applied here, because 1. Melan is a living weapon Monomakia. He was created for battle, and as such wasn't designed for sex, or the desire of it. [Hmm, now that I think about it, if Marin and Melan actually ended up together in the end, then this is going to be a BIG problem ![]() I'd like to think this is more like an "odd pairing", which as the name suggests is when you try to pair up two kinds of characters whom you usually would NOT pair up. Yes, the age gap is there, I did find it unusual, and I was a bit conscious of it at the beginning. But i guess didn't find it bothersome enough and was able to shrug it off after a few episodes. I've seen worse anyway. Such as pairings between humans and animals. Such as ... huh.... oh yeah. Chibiusa being paired with Pegasus. Which wikipedia tells me is a horse. [Fine. So it's a unicorn. Which is a one-horned horse.] I've seen a dog and a girl paired up in "All Dogs go to Heaven" and a fully grownup man and an 11-year old girl in "The Professional". Except for Chibiusa's bit, I've found it fun to watch a story develop with an odd pairing in it. But it's even more fun watching an unexperienced audience react to it. |

I've only read the manga but Brigadoon is a mecha loli show at best. The frienship between the two could easily be viewed as something lolicon.

Yeah, but the story in the anime takes a really different turn, it was hardly comparable to the manga for at least the second half. Yes, I still could see Marin and Melan being a bit lolicon (I'm not the only that that came off as a little bit creepy to), but the story isn't really like it was in the manga, it's not just a lolicon robot+young girl story that I'll admit the manga leaned more towards. Not to mention the best friend's name, I got a small smirk on my face every time I heard her name (with a loud laugh the first time, when I was younger and didn't quite understand Japanese pronunciation, which was when I read the manga, I just read it as "Moe" and is "Larry, Moe, and Curly", not as...well....). Either way, the anime was better than expected for me and a lot different than the manga. |

as I wasn't familiar with what 'lolicon' is all about, I had to go digging into the subject and what I discovered made me hate wikipedia for a while...
"lolicon" seems to be used in the same context as pedophilia, as in the case of "Kodomo no Jikan", another anime series which incidentally is being discussed somewhere here in the anime section of the ANN forum as well. Apparently, there is undeniable sexual tension between the teacher and his kid student and this makes for a very uncomfortable audience. [how far this "sexual tension" thing goes, I have no idea, but I understand the kid went as far as 'seducing' her teacher] I've watched the entire Brigadoon series thrice, and I didn't see anything as explicit. But maybe because I'm looking at it from my point of view? I seriously don't know. *mutters to self* I am *too* obsessed with Brigadoon..... |
