Ok I know Motoko used to be fully human, so does this go for everyone else who is a cyborg as well in the world, or just a few including Motoko

Is this the movie or TV series? If the movie, Motoko was never human. She was created as a machine, as you see in the opening credits.

No, no, no.
I could be wrong, but I believe that that was the maintenance. She thought she was once fully human, but she was questioning that in the movie.

Yes in the movie, all of Section 9 was once human. Togusa and Aramaki still are. The Major and Batou are completely cyborg, except for their brain which is not (actually parts of the brain, because part of their brain is their cyberbrain)

No no.. most people in the world ARE still human, most people have cyberbrains that allow them to access the net, but they aren't cyborgs and except for their enhanced brain their bodies are still human. Mostly just some military personnel and elite groups like Section 9 have people that are complete cyborgs. The other case would be if something happened to your body and you they needed to make you a cyborg to survive (which is what happened to the Major). Togusa and Aramaki for an example are completely human except that they have cyberbrains.

Actually they never say exactly what the Major is. In the movie they mention that she is "A few brain cells on a chip" which implies that she is some where between a cyborg (robot with human brain) and an android (robot with no brain). But in the manga they never say what she is, but hint that she is a cyborg. However, given that she was able to merge with an AI I would say that she lies somewhere nearer to an android than to a cyborg

My understanding was that she was once fully human. I know we're talking about the movie here, but in the TV show I seem to remember her talking about a doll she had once that she accidently crushed because she wasn't used to her cyborg body.
In the movie, doesn't it say that her brain and spinal cord are all that's left of her original body?

During the boat scence with Batou, she jokes that when they retire, the only thing left of them will be a brain and some other minor body parts.
As for Togusa and Chief Aramaki, the only thing that is remotely cyborg about them is a Brain Augmentation of some sort. Motoko makes the reference in the van about Togusa going after the Garbagemen, and Batou mentions this to Togusa about him and the Chief when they overlook the Puppetmasters "body."
Also, the Opening Sequence has the entire process of making Motoko. Judging by the images, it can be assumed that Motoko's Brain, some nerves, and her Spinal Cord are the only things "natural" about her. The rest is all artifical.

Yeah, that's what I was saying they have cyberbrains, but that's it (most people in the world of GITS have cyberbrains except for really poor people), not near as many are actually cyborgs. Saito is next in line in Section 9 for being the most human after the Chief and Togusa, only his left eye and wrist are cybernetic

BINGO!! I found my old Philosophy Thesis on Ghost in the Shell on my Harddrive. I'll try to include the main points.
Kusanagi comments in the film that she wonders if she was someone else once. What if during the process of turning her from Human to Cyborg, someone decided to mess with her inner pysche, refered to as "ghost" in the film, and give her a new persona, i.e. "Motoko Kusanagi." She questioned this in the movie twice, once in the boat, once in the elvator with Batou.
While this is a possibility, it's safe to say that Kusanagi was not tampered with soul wise. Thought it's a major plot point in the film (the possibility of "Man-Made Ghosts or AI's spontaniously creating a soul"), there is no way you can tamper with a Human Soul vs. the Cyborg Ghost. However, Aramaki does have a comment with Batou about the folks that do the maitenace of both him and Kusanagi. The people that work on the cyborg bodies have to go thru alot of tests, but those that do the tests...are only Human.

Yeah, but you didn't use the correct terminology. Hence the correction.

That's only in the SAC TV series. No mention of that in the movie.

That's what they have in the movie too, it's just that they don't mention the name of it. That's what allows them to talk to each other in their heads.
