I love Silver Diamond, and I'm glad to see ANN continuously remind the fandom of its existence, but I'm also glad to see a reviewer bring up Tokyopop's steadily decreasing paper quality. SD4 is actually better than some of the other recently published volumes, which is pretty depressing. A lot of recent Tokyopop titles are basically sporting newsprint.
Also, the exclusion of the color inserts sucks, but to Tokyopop's credit the awful fanart *was*there from the beginning. You'd think it'd get better with more volumes and presumably ergo more readers, but...

I go back and forth on the paper quality/extras issue. I definitely crave good paper and amenities like dust jackets and color inserts, but I also want to continue seeing releases, even on a more spartan budget. I'm generally less irked when a publisher cuts back on materials costs for a longer series than on a short series or single volume, as it's more of a budgetary commitment. (This assumes that the physical quality is at issue and not the quality of the translation.)
I'd jump on vol 5 of "Demon Flowers" (Kuruizaki no Hana) in pretty much any form at this point. Official electronic download of the final proof? Sign me up. I freely admit I dread seeing it released on newsprint... but let me take this opportunity to assure TokyoPop that I'd snap it up in a heartbeat. I can glean only so much from the art in my Japanese edition, and it's The Final Volume. Please schedule. Much appreciated.

Yes, Rakan is a bit of a Pollyanna. But that's part of his character. His practicality and "Let's all just get along" attitude are part of what makes him attractive. Similar to Yuuki from "Kyou Kara Maou", without the spazz. At least he doesn't annoy me like some shoujo heroines do. I also enjoy the art. It doesn't have the curly roundness of old school shoujo, but neither does it have the sharp angles or elongated lines of some newer styles. It's perfect of what it is. Pretty shounen-ai action.
The use of Japanese and Japanese nomenclature in this parallel world are a key point in this manga. And I'm glad that TokyoPop included notes in the first few volumes (I assume it's in v4 too, which I haven't received yet.)
Like the other comment-ers, I'm sorry for the decline in paper quality and lack of color inserts. But (hopefully) at least the translation quality and editorial standards are still high. Unlike "Kyo Kara Maou" v2 which was so bad editorially that I wanted to demand a refund.
The stall or discontinuation of volumes are what really make me mad. I'm with rabrek. I want the final volumes of "Demon Flowers". Also "Dragon Voice", "Pick of the Litter" and "Li Ling Po" were near finish. Somebody was obviously buying them for TP to publish the books in the first place. When you get us hooked on on a manga, finish it!
Keep readable volumes coming steadily and I'll keep buying them.

I agree. I really dislike the decrease in paper quality, but if it means getting VB Rose out again, I'll live with it.
I just read Silver Diamond vol 1 a week or two ago and really enjoyed it. Glad to see it's still entertaining, even if this isn't the best volume. Will definitely pick these up in the future (come on TRSI TP sale!).

agrees with the unattractive fanart comment...and hey, what's with the paper quality.
AND what's with the VOLUME 5 release date being pushed back to March of 2010??????????? (at least on amazon's site)
Japan's on Volume 17 and hey, it's getting close to a wrap-up. At this rate, the english readers will have to wait another 10 years until this is finish...that is, if TP hasn't dropped it or if the readers haven't already moved on to her next title or some other new thing.

Quote: | In any case, there really is not much to recommend this particular volume when it comes to character development. We get to see Rakan being Super-Generous and Thoughtful, providing pre-prepared food to his companions after they end up on the rear end of nowhere. Meanwhile, Chigusa continues to make clumsy, suggestive overtures to Rakan—and gets precisely nowhere with them (besides garnering the contempt of the other men, that is). And the Pac-Man gone all snake-shaped named Koh does not appear save for the briefest of cameos, more's the pity. |
To be fair, this volume would be expected to be more of a plot-development, or at least an aclimatize the main character to the new planet volume, not to mention intro new recurring characters. I have no doubt that the thieves will pop up regularly if they are not going to serve as home base at least for awhile.
