Artland did a really good job with Mushishi, why did Gunslinger Girl season 2 suck?

Oh wow, I did not know this was being streamed. I've seen the first few episodes fansubbed and while the production value certainly took a bit nosedive from the first series, I think Il Teatrino easily has the more interesting plot. I definitely cannot wait to see more of it (and might not have to, if we figure out where the streaming is...might be nice for the review to mention that).

Hmm... I started this one fansubbed in the way back when (i.e. pre-licensing) and dropped it for precisely the negatives you gave it. But if the finale really does wind up going somewhere awesome as you say, I'll probably give it another try now that's streaming.

As a huge fan of the Gunslinger Girl manga, I was quite enthused with Il Teatrino. I don't think it was mentioned that Teatrino stays much closer to the source material than the first series did. Also, Teatrino is not a direct sequel. There are a few episodes that play out almost the exact same as one or two episodes did in the original series. However, Pinocchio is the real treat in Teatrino, and spoiler[his confrontations with Treila] sure did not disappoint.

Yeah, it's not as well animated as the original series, but that's to be expected from a change of studios from Madhouse to Artland. I still say that the animation suffices for the most part, and the more fleshed out characters (particularly Franco and Franca) make the series worth it every bit the watch (c'mon it's free!) and buy once the set is released.

I agree. When you make the direct comparison to the first series, then the art suffers. But if you put it up against the majority of anime out there, it's either the same or quite often significantly better done than others *cough*xxxHolic*cough.* It's not really bad animation it just isn't spectacular either, at least IMO.

I never saw the first series, but it interested me. Unfortunately, only a couple of episodes of it are available for streaming.

Could someone familiar with both tell me whether it would be a bad idea to watch Teatrino without having seen the first series? Would I be able to understand what's going on? Would I spoil a bunch of the first series for myself?

What a profoundly depressing review. Depressing because Gunslinger Girl is a beloved favourite of mine and to hear the second season isn't of a piece with the first is a bummer. I haven't seen Il Teatrino yet, but Carl's review jibes with rumblings I've heard elsewhere and I'm very afraid I'll be in agreement with it.

*sigh*

Sometimes, Blood, a little animation sacrifice has to be made for the story, which was still given an "A".

I can forgive this, especially since I didn't really appreciate the art style of the original as much as others. The story definitely made up for it.

Not to be negative against ANN reviewers, but it seems they're so picky, I don't think I've ever seen a "positive" review overall. If I were to relate my choices solely based on what others think, my collection would have two titles in it.

As a review writer once myself, I definitely know it's impossible to please everyone.

So, does anyone have any idea when this is supposed to be released on DVD? I have purposely NOT watched the subs, because I loved the dub so much on the first season and I am holding out hope that the original cast will return. It's been over a year since Funi announced that they'd gotten the rights to this show, and since then, there's been nary a hint of a release date.

I personally don't care what kind of reviews this series gets, I'm buying it regardless.

There have been a few glowing reviews in the past. Some that jump to mind were the very positive reviews of Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid and I believe Sky Crawlers got a very nice review as well

I would say its a pretty bad idea myself. Alot of character development happens in the first season

I think Mushi-shi has had positive reviews here as well, from what I remember.

For me the art really put me off the 2nd season. I decided that after reading this section of the manga there was really no point at all in watching this. Although this bit arguably has a better storyline I was just put off by the presentation and didn't feel like going over things a second time when I could just re-read the manga if I wanted that.

Oops. Didn't mean to imply there weren't any, just that I've yet to see one.

But I'm also not done yet, either.
