So far my candidate is from Shikabane Hime. For those of you unfamiliar with the series, a Shikabane is a monster/ghost created when somebody dies in the throes of a "strong regret." A Shikabane Hime is a Shikabane who kills these monsters/ghosts - usually by riddling their brains with many, many bullets.

The titular Shikabane Hime of the series is schoolgirl (naturally) Makina and the OP lyrics are sung from her point of view. See if she strikes you as a fun date (words transcribed from the English sub provided from Funimation's website):

I rip my inescapable fate to pieces and move forward
accepting the unavoidable reality in my heart
At the end of the sorrow and hardship
my writhing soul heads toward the light
I shout... I grant...
And I head past the unwavering obsessions
Even if just for a moment
hold me, heart and all, in your arms
So I can feel the warmth of happiness
I destroy... I try...
I just have to live with all my might
I don't feel loneliness
since I left it somewhere
Kindness... sympathy...
I don't need either of them now
Shine the light!

Aw, don't you feel all warm and fuzzy now? So what are the most suicide friendly OP (or EN) lyrics you've run across?

Although anime-related, this is still more appropriate for the Music thread and so is being moved there.

Pretty much anything by Ali Project makes me feel sad from reading the lyrics.

What, no one's going to mention the Serial Experiments Lain opening? It's a really good song and the lyrics are a bit sad. I know I can think of more if I actually sat down to think about it, but this just came to mind.

I thought of the Akagi OP when I read the title:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZkm9egboZU

Here's the English translation of the lyrics (full):

I've just been pretending to have some courage, already half a year has passed.
What has changed? Who is it that I love?
Inside my head, my dreams have began to crumble
But I'll get used to it somehow

It's been nothing but desperation for the past half year
What has changed? Who do I love?
Inside my head, my dreams have began to crumble
But I'll get used to it somehow

Funny, that's what I thought of the moment I saw this thread.

To this list you can add the OP for Witch Hunter Robin. Though I can't recall the lyrics, I do know it perfectly set the mood for each ep of this rather somber series. Maybe my inability to remember the words could be chalked up to selective amnesia, as it is quite the downer.

I'm surprised nobody has listed Gilbert O'Sullivan's "Alone Again (Naturally)," which was used for one episode of the classic Maison Ikkoku.

http://www.[Illegal streaming site].com/dailymotion/x27m1n/maison-ikkoku-op-2---alone-again%252C-naturally/

"In a little while from now
If I’m not feeling any less sour
I promise myself to treat myself
And visit a nearby tower
And climbing to the top will throw myself off
In an effort to make it clear to who
Ever what it’s like when you’re shattered
Left standing in the lurch at a church
Where people saying: "My God, that’s tough
She's stood him up"
No point in us remaining
We may as well go home
As I did on my own
Alone again, naturally

It seems to me that there are more hearts
broken in the world that can’t be mended
Left unattended
What do we do? What do we do?"

There are plenty of ED songs with depressing lyrics, but it is rare to find them in OPs, since OPs are generally meant to be upbeat and energizing.

At the moment, I can't recall any OP more depressing than Gankutsuou.

Harsh words were said, and lies were told instead.
I didn't ever mean to make you cry.
But love can make us weak and make us strong.
And before too very long.
I was totally in love with you, I bathed in you,
Lost in you, captivated by you,
Amazed by you, dazed by you.

Nothing can go wrong.
Nothing can go wrong.

So tonight I'll sing a song to all my friends,
Also to those we won't be seeing again.
To those I knew and those I still adore,
And I want to see once more...
I just pray that you will love me and trust me,
Laugh with me and cry with me,
Spend those silent times with me.

Love me evermore.
Love me evermore.

You and I were lovers.
Our dreams were not soured by life.
And then my friends betrayal
Meant you never would be my wife.

Harsh words were said, and lies were told instead.
I didn't ever mean to make you cry.
But love can make us weak and make us strong.
And before too very long,
I was totally in love with you, I bathed in you,
Lost in you, captivated by you,
Amazed by you, dazed by you.

Nothing can go wrong.
Nothing can go wrong.

Perfect fit for the character of the Count, the mood of the series, and the original Count of Monte Cristo backstory.

There's also NieA_7's OP, which like the show itself, is quite melancholy. Basically, it's about trying and wanting to be happy, while never quite getting there. And possibly about a mournful jealousy of people who are happy.

I'm a big fan of that song, but had no idea it had been used in an anime! That, along with "Nothing Rhymed", are O'Sullivan's best thought-provoking, somber songs. Thanks for the heads-up, bud.

To stay on-topic, while it isn't the most depressing OP ever, the lyrics to Oasis' "Falling Down", used in Eden of the East merit a mention:

Oasis wrote:
A dying scream makes no sound,
Callin' out to all that I've ever known,
Here am I, lost and found,
Callin' out to all...

We live a dying dream, if you know what I mean,
All that I've ever known, it's all that I've ever known.

Catch the wheel that breaks the butterfly,
I cried the rain that fills the ocean wide,
I tried to talk to God, to no avail,
Callin' him in and out of nowhere,
Said, "If you won't save me, please don't waste my time."

It's really a perfect fit for the tone and themes of the series.

Gotta chime in here. My favorite incredibly depressing OP song, from Nurse Angel Ririka: "Koi wo Suru tabi ni Kizu Tsuki Yasuku" (When in Love, One Can Be Hurt So Easily")

Quote:

Somewhere in town, someone is alone, crying
Somewhere in town, the night is painful for someone
When in love, one can be hurt so easily...

If you cherish something too much, sometimes you lose it
I'm the one who took away your freedom
The feeling of loving changes into oppressiveness - REGRET
I have to see you again, but it might cause a storm

Somewhere in town, someone is lonely
Somewhere in town, someone is living an unbearable night
When in love, one can be hurt so easily...

All this to a peppy techno song! Anime dazed

One of my favorite downer OP lyrics are the ones from Higurashi

Behind where I looked back (Who's in the front?)
I raised my claws at the darkness (and ripped the night apart)

Raindrops turn into droplets of blood
and run down my cheeks
If there isn't a place for me to return anywhere anymore

Take these fingers, my fingers
I'll take all your fingers away
To the unopenable forest where cicadas cry
There's no turning back anymore

People disappear one by one (blue flames)
On the other side of the darkness (the morning won't come anymore)
People disappear one by one (blue flames)
On the other side of the darkness (the morning won't come anymore)

With countless wriggling and stretching hands in the mirror,
Come on, lure someone here

Oni-san, come here, to where my hands clap
No matter how you run away, I'll catch you
The voice that was coming from the animal trail
where cidadas cry, is no more

Take these fingers, my fingers
I'll take all your fingers away
To the unopenable forest where cicadas cry
There's no turning back anymore

Oni-san, come here, to where my hands clap
No matter how you run away, I'll catch you
The voice that was coming from the animal trail
where cidadas cry, is no more

The opening animation fits really well with it too.

When I first saw the title to this thread I immediately thought of Higurashi.

Other than that, I don't pay attention much to song lyrics, but I have to also second the SZS OPs and EDs.[/i]
