So I started to watch Princess Resurrection on ANoD and I thought, "great, now I can save money by not having to buy the series on DVD."
Wrong. After two episodes I now feel the need to own the series. So I watched the first two episodes of Shikabane Hime" on the Funimation website. Great, another series I won't have to buy! Wrong. I feel I must own it. The only thing is that it doesn't appear to be available on DVD any where. Yeah, this "free" anime is going to get expensive I can see. |

I think that's kind of the point of the streaming sites.
I'm not sure if that's what you're getting at or not, but I noticed that the video quality on most anime streaming sites does not satisfy me anymore, and does not do the show justice either. |

Actually, I saw the first eppie of Shikabane on an LCD monitor and it was fine. Quality is actually not the issue with me. It's more of a psychological thing...if I like a series I have the urge to own it. Mind you, there is the example of Ninja Nonsense which is a show I'm enjoying on ANoD yet feel no need to actually own. I'm hoping this kind of thing will happen more often.

Wow, the thread title threw me off. I thought you were going to talk about the morality (or not) of fansubbing.
I find that downloading a show as opposed to watching it streamed usually reduces the desire to own it on DVD. After all, if I have it on my hard drive, why - beyond getting the dub - do I need to buy the show? Of course, I still go out and buy all the shows where I downloaded more than one or two episodes, if only so I can keep the moral high-ground. |

Meh, morality doesn't bother me, especially since it takes ages (if ever) for the series I like to be released here in US. It's rather practical - I wouldn't wait for 3-5 years. I don't even live in US permanently, so in Eastern Europe it's very hard to find anime other than in fansubs online.
That said, I agree with dtm42 on the psychological aspect of it. Perhaps, once I finish studying and get a well-paid job I'll start buying up releases in whatever's the newest format. Until then,

Welcome. To my world. What's worse? Seeing a free show and NOT finding it on DVD! 
Second to worse? Finding the DVD and realizing all the PVC characters for the series have long since been retired. 
And I can't believe you're older than me. Starts to explain alot, gramps. 
Hang in there! It's a slow process but it is changing. Now all we have to worry about is this [bleepin' bleep bleep bleep] broadband capping that's hitting the news.

I feel you. Streaming things, getting to watch them "for free," is ALWAYS the main reason I add something to my "I must now buy this" list.
I don't keep things on my hard drive (unless I'm making an AMV or a review show, and that's temporary.) It makes me sad that I have lower quality illegal video sitting around on my drive, sometimes with forced subs on it covering up the art permanently, when I should have a DVD on my shelf with pretty art that I can show on my TV and pass out to friends, etc. If I like something, I have to buy it...over time, though, I'm not a binger and can't afford to be. I have a nice long list of both movies and anime that I scratch away at every other week: one new series in box/thinpak form every other week, and/or three movies, depending on how I'm doing with the bank and all. I'll still watch stuff I never plan to buy, but I stream it hodgepodge, often right before it gets taken off the internet. You CAN find everything that way, and shockingly, most things in dub as well in Japanese, so I get to try both!  I may not watch the whole thing, but I get enough to decide whether or not to rent it, sometimes blind-buying if what I saw was AWESOME. (Check out my avvy. Saw three episodes, then bought the whole series blind.)
Not that I haven't blind-bought COMPLETELY blind before, but I had dial-up then...and could have saved some money. Not a safe method. |

Some of the best and/or enjoyable shows that I have I bought blind. Rumbling Hearts, Crest of the Stars, Kino's Journey, Gasaraki, Berserk, Hellsing, Trigun, Haibane Renmei, Elfen Lied; I could go on. And on. And on. Living in a backwater like New Zealand does have one good thing going for it; usually only good or popular shows make it to our humble shores. So blind buying is actually an acceptable purchasing method. Sorry for going off topic, I'll disappear now. |

So far out of the shows I have seen streamed I have no desire to ever buy. except FMA: Brotherhood which I planned to buy anyways eventually.
That being said I haven't been streaming for long and I still have a backlog of stuff that I own and have not watched, so maybe that is the reason.
Funny I did this when I first started, although it is more hit and miss in Canada. Got to say I've been incredibly lucky and the not so good stuff has somehow been kept to a minimum. This is also the reason I have such a backlog though. |

Those are pretty good ones. (Well, I could beg to differ on two of them, but they're popular, anyway.) See, we get all KINDS of random crap even in backwoods Kentucky coating the old FYE that I can't do that with any kind of safety. The shelves go on for several yards, and just because it's cheap doesn't mean picking up Mouse or Melody of Oblivion is advised, right? But I can see where you're coming from when you say you only get the cream of the crop...a lot of places in the states get the cream of the crap. |

I can understand where the OP is coming from. Even downloading isn't enough, I still want the actual DVD in my possession. That's why I've severely minimized my viewing on Funimation's videos on their site and Youtube, since there's already enough from them I want to buy that adding on to it is just too much. Bandai didn't help here by putting Code Geass on Youtube, now I want that one as well (I missed the Adult Swim run), but luckily I was already planning to buy Gundam 00 so no problem there. And now even Viz is starting to put anime (and even manga, geez) online, it's too much!
The same logic applies to manga as well for me. That's why I'm hesitant to read much manga online, as I know once I start, I'll want to buy it all. And since I find manga-buying to be more expensive and shelf-hogging than anime DVDs, I've only read/bought about ten manga series so far. As for buy blinds, I've not been burned by them yet (most of my anime is bought blind, and the least favorite in my collection is Final Fantasy Unlimited, and even that I found so-so). I try to look up reviews/plot synopsis/trailers before buying, and I'm able to tell what I would like and what I wouldn't (I'm open to most genres). |

Yeah, but it was a lot safer buying blind when companies were releasing single discs versus half season or full season sets. Not that I don't prefer buying the half/full season sets, but if you haven't seen something before the higher price tag is more of a hindrance. The other problem is that I don't like buying something twice. I would really like to try out Baccano. But if I bought a single disc and liked it, then I would have to buy the artbox+volume 1 version (because I'm an artbox whore). I really like what ADV was doing before they tanked, releasing boxes with volume 2 of series (Red Garden and Tokyo Majin were two of these). This is where previewing something online then becomes much more desirable. |

Umm, no. Mouse, like a lot of other series was made off of trying to promote the manga, and was ended pre-maturely, of which I never like to see happen. I actually only got to see the dub which in itself sounded like a bunch of older women deprived of something. It had fanservice and such which is great but it just didn't have that appealing factor to it like the manga does. Getting back to the topic on hand, it sure does feel great when you get to watch these series for free, but it's also a marketing ploy in a good way that makes you want to have it. And you get stuff on the DVDs that you don't get just by watching the episodes in themselves. |

Yeah, if I wasn't a student I'd be motivated to buy the DVDs of the series I like as well; however, when the choice comes to food and clothing versus DVDs, I still choose food 'n clothing. Guess I'm not enough of an otaku
