Zac Efron = the douche-bag-leader of the disgusting Disney Channel troupe of talentless con artists who make it big by starting with the impressionable children then move on to torment us even here in the world of anime. The force is strong with them. Zac seems less retarded than the rest of the HSM crew but he's dating Vannessa Hudgens so her 'yuck!' probably isn't too far from his own.

I enjoy FMP way too much to watch the potential train wreck that would be a live-action and to have Z.E. play Sousuke lol... It's so bad it might be good... no, no it won't be good.

Disney Channel drones... wow gross. What's next, is Miley going to get the urge to 'act'?

not too shabby for an R rating. You should check these things, y'know.

I did. I watched every successive week as it slipped off the top-ten more and more dramatically. Not a good showing critically.

If we're going by numbers, then Waterworld must be a masterpiece. And if that fits your deffinition, then I must say "Good day."

Depends on you. Waterworld made money for the producers of it... Isn't that considered success? Critics are finicky, I know a few critical successes that almost broke their studios. Once it breaks even, it is in some way success.

Not to say that Waterworld didn't blow chunks, but what success criteria are you using? Fast and Furious?

Ok, so for the next few possible anime-to-live adaptions we now have Keanu Reeves as Spike and Zac Efron as Sousuke....

....

What has the world come to?

Does Hollywood have fun picking on Otaku?

Oh well, could be worse... As long as its not like ZB i'll be happy. The storyline seems more like something Americans would enjoy/attempt-to-get-right so, it might end out ok....

Maybe.

If we pray enough.

Well... I can't speak for how awesome or horrible this Zac Efron dude is because I haven't seen them musicals, but from the reaction in this forum, it sounds like it's more of a horror story than a cheesy high school movie, or whatever.

Nevertheless, quite frankly, I'm just glad they are even considering making a movie; perhaps it this will encourage Kyoto Animation and/or Gonzo to get off their asses and start making an anime of the third season, and Tokyo Pop to get better translators/editors to continue translating the light novels. In fact, they would make my day if the animation studios make A Very Merry Christmas an OVA... it's short enough, and I bet they could make a fairly decent amount of money, if that's what holding them back. I know the serious fans are willing to cough up the money, no questions asked.

Anyway... I just hope it actually happens... and that it's not just talk like Akira... everyone's been "considering" that project for years, and nothing's happened yet. Not that I care, because I don't like Akira, (and yes, I did hear that DiCaprio wanted to do that movie), but I'm just making a point in terms of how often Hollywood considers making a movie of something and two days later it goes down the pipes.

Anyway, and to think I was watching Azumanga Daioh and wanted to read ANN's entry on it... Luci Christian's voice acting is so awesome... one of the VERY few English voice actresses that really knows what she's doing; a total natural, and that's saying a lot considering I think watching anime in English is blasphemy. So... yay for curiosity; I wouldn't have come in and seen this wonderful news otherwise. *_*

Really, guys? All this doom and gloom over a "maybe"? In this economy, who knows if it'll even get made?

Also, why all this hate for High School Musical? It's a movie, for crying out loud. I thought it was cute, can't be moved much either way, and probably have some of the music on my iPod. I respect individual opinions, but this is kind of ridiculous. If you didn't like it, you didn't like it. Let it go.

Same thing for Zac Efron. He's a young actor. Maybe he'll turn out to be worthwhile at some point, maybe he won't. He hasn't even done anything to warrant such unpleasantness. Wait until he beats up his girlfriend or gets caught in a compromising position with a hamster or something, and then rail at him.

I am a big fan of FMP. Have been for years. I've seen the shows, read the light novels, skimmed the manga, bought the merchandise--the whole drill. I don't know how I feel about a live action adaptation, but I'm willing to give it a shot. They could cast a gibbon as Sousuke, and I'd still probably go see it. If it sucks, it's not like it has any effect on canon. We can all just move on.

Can we please, please just be pleasant and discuss this without it turning into a hate fest on the American film industry, actors, or movies that have nothing to do with Full Metal Panic??

You know, I can honestly say I don't even know if I've ever seen Zac Effron in a movie at all, so I really don't care about his part in all of this. I have no animosity toward an FMP! live-action, except that I think Hollywood is too stupid to just make an FMP! movie. (They'll change so much if it does get made that it just won't be remotely the same thing.)

I do wish Hollywood would consider casting people who actually fit the roles they are playing every so often though. (Or at least cast people who can act and not just look hot.)

Also, I have seen Wild Things. I've always liked Neve Campbell. Definately not much more than a guilty pleasure type of movie but it is a fun one. (Hey, that movie even has a bit of a "nice boat" element at the end.)

I'm not sure if ADV has Full Metal Panic! and Fumoffu up on it's streaming site but Funimation has The Second Raid up on their Video Portal here. This is a solid franchise. The first season is a mix of serious mecha action and drama with comedy while the second is a straight out comedy. The third series, The Second Raid, continues the main plot lines from the first season and is dead-serious and awesome.

The light novels that the first season was based on are also in print from Tokyopop and they're great. Unfortunately the third book is hard to find due to Tokyopop's lack of printing. (I recommend hunting down the third one, the first two are easy to find, if you really enjoy the series. All three books contains bits and pieces the anime left out.)

This times 10. Yes, please let this happen.

@ OnanRulz: I've never seen Watchmen or read the graphic novel. However, I can say that the biggest reason it hasn't done as well as some movies in the same genre is it lacks the widespread appeal of something like Iron Man, the early marketing did nothing to really explain the movie or introduce the characters and while it may be fairly faithful to the source material, at the end of the day it was never going to be a huge blockbuster because it's not a "mainstream" story. It likely will end up making profit but just not as much as something like Iron Man.

Oh believe me, there can be worse and have seen worse. Frankly though, I can't imagine the thing behind mecha first off, and the storyline was cheesy to me. I have my preferences, you have yours.

Because we totally have a good history of live action anime adaptations to--oh, wait.

That's not really fair. The forray into live action anime movies made by hollywood is fairly new. You'd be hard pressed to find a decent live action comic book movie when hollywood first began to pioneer that route, and here we are over 20 years latter from their first crack at it and they're just now starting to get that right. I guess my point is with every bad live action movie that comes out there's more of a chance that someone will eventually come around and do it right (and with the amount of crappy anime live adaptation movies coming out they've got plenty of templates to learn what not to do from).

Yeah, you definitely got a point there... the question is... are they actually willing to invest the time in research this new phenomenon, and finding out what worked and didn't work in the live-action adaptations that have been made so far? If they actually did, then it'd be a whole different story, and you wouldn't have so much people whining and bitching about it as they are now.

As far as I know... the longer a movie stays in "development hell" the better off we are... that will give whoever wants to take a shot at it enough time to do their homework... hopefully, anyway.

After watching most of the High School Musical movies (I have a little sister), I really do not see how Zac Efron would fit anywhere in the Full Metal Panic! world. I do not think he can pull off the battle-hardened teenage guerrilla/soldier/Milthril specialist Arm Slave pilot role. Besides, his hair is too pretty. It makes him look a little bishōnen.

ROFLMAO!!!!!

That much is true! He looks like he belongs in the High School Host Club or something like that, with a twin gay brother!

I went to see his picture at imdb--sorry girls... I don't know who the hell this Efron guy is, I'm 24, so I'm a bit too old for the Disney Channel fever... anime is as childish as I'll ever get (oh, and Wall-E)--and that was my first impression.

Furthermore, he'd really have to roughen up a bit MOOOOREEE, and I know a lot of girls will cry blasphemy if--God forbid!--they try to scar his pretty face like Sousuke. First thing to do would be to cut his hair with a Rambo knife... and we can use the same knife to duplicate the scar, but I think it's okay if they use make up... meh... what can you do?

Actually, FMP? Fumoffu slyly takes the piss out of the mecha genre, but in a loving way.

...

Anyhoo, admins, please feel free to ban fighterholic for having the temerity not to agree with my opinion of a specific anime series. Thanks everso in advance.

Zac Effron? I'll give this a chance if they get a good director and all that, but Zac Effron? This is coming from a supporter of DB:E: WTF?

Okay, I admit my opinion of him is jaded because I really dislike HSM, and I understand that hiring a popular actor could bring good financial success, but seriously, Effron's acting skills are up in the air. I honestly can't state whether or not Effron is a good actor. Under the right director, great roles can be taken from piss-poor actors. I'll give it a shot, but, honestly, I think casting Keanu Reeves as Spike is much better than casting Zack Effron as Sousuke. Still, I'm sure he'll grow on me somewhat. Maybe, just maybe, if he pulls off a good job as Sousuke, I can tolerate him as Light.

Ok, I posted earlier in the thread but I didn't have time to really go into my thoughts (I was about to go to work this morning). Anyway, my thoughts on this are that I hope this FMP Live action film does well. I don't expect movies to have anything much if anything to do with the source materials (I learned that lesson as a kid) and I expect this to be no different. I expect names to be changed and the plot to only be based on the parameters of Full Metal Panic the books and/or anime.

The thing with FMP is that they could go several ways with the material. They could go for the laughs (i.e. Fumoffu) or they could go serious or a bit of both. As to the setting, FMP could be set in a private school or simply set in a alternative version of this world - which is what FMP actually is! [While it never seems to be covered much in the Anime, the books make it a bit more clear that FMP is set in a world that has a very different back history than ours after 1983 or so.] Someone was saying they couldn't do the Mecha aspect of this but actually they might be able to. The Mecha in FMP is not used as much as it is in Transformers and other than the individual mechas and the submarine, the movie wouldn't really have to do much more with the special effects.

As for Zac Efron - I haven't seen enough of him in anything to really have an opinion of him. The main thing he brings to this is star power with young females. The action/adventure is going to bring in the guys, even more so if they pick some cute females to play Tessa and Kanome's parts. IMO if you just don't like the idea of a live action FMP then just ignore it. It won't have any effect on the Anime story or the books and how good they are. They'll continue to exist as they are no matter what happens.

That said, the publicity of a potential live action film of FMP could help the books and anime and that's a good thing IMO. The fact a teen star might appear in this film could prod TokyoPop to release/re-release the books. Interest in this film might even get FMP on more mainstream US TV where I feel it should have aired all along (not Adult Swim - FWIW AS has made it clear from comments they've posted at ASMB over the years that they've had plenty of chances to buy it but their programmers don't think FMP would work for them), but maybe Sci Fi or another channel might finally pick it up.

Anyway, I don't see this news as bad. Personally, I really don't know if it can get out of the development stage and the likelihood it could get out of there with Zac Efron still attached is even slimmer (Toby McGuire still seems in limbo with his Robotech movie and he probably had more pull when that started than Efron does now they way I see it). I'd like to see the interest in this property turned into something positive (like getting the books released) and less worrying about something that may never happen (i.e. this movie actually getting filmed).

PS: BTW, for those who have no idea who Zac Efron is, he was used as part of a Toonzone April Fools Joke that Funimation's Blog posted in there April Fools coverage http://blog.funimation.com/2009/04/april-fools/ Twisted Evil

I don't see how this can be bad news. It's not like this will ruin the anime. If you don't like this then don't watch it. and if you do like it it's a bonus. I for one thing Hollywood is capable of doing almost anything right, but they do sometimes suck.

I think they have done a fantastic job with the majority of the comic book character movies, and while they don't stick to the plot in detail they get much of the same themes and even some of the original plot points in those films.

The only thing that makes me worry about this and the Cowboy Bebop film is the apparently terrible job that they did with DBE, but there is no reason pure laziness there has to equate to the same here.

OH WOW! How did I miss this news post?

This is definitly an interesting turn of events.

On the topic of Zac Efron, I have never really seen any of the movies he has been in, however after I did an image search on Google for him, I have to say that he definitely looks likes Sousuke. With a little darker hair, he could easily pull off Sousuke's look.

However, on the case of his acting, I've never seen him act, so I don't really know what to say.

But then again, its Sousuke... Mr. Personality. Not to mention the fact that his actual character is bad act acting. (First day of being an undercover high school student, he accidentally introduces himself to the class as 'Sgt. Sousuke Sagara...')
