Beck is a great example of translating the music in the anime. the main reason they did it that way is because it would have just sounded weird to have the characters sing in a completely different voice than that of when they are talking.

Bought Nerima Daikon Brothers a while ago. I have to say they did a pretty good job with the songs.

The translated Fruits Basket OP is one of the things that drove me to become a sub fan. Just compare the very first sung notes of both versions, and you'll notice that the dub version is out of tune. Also, later on, they significantly alter the melody for no good reason, changing it to something less catchy.

I tend to agree with a lackluster japanese song will usually make for a better english version. What i can't stand is when the English version really forces lines from the japanese version to the point where it's just akward at times. I found that a lot in Sobakasu/freckles (rurouni kenshin) which is why since then i tend to stick with subs

Having a song in Japanese in the middle of an Enlglish(or any other language) dub is weird, if you think about it. But how many times have you thought, "I wonder what that song would sound like in Enlish. On the contrary, When the opposite happens I think to myself. How the original would sound like.
Rarely do translated songs maintain there quality. I understand words not fitting but changing the tune is pointless. |

I agree with this sentiment. Really translated songs don't really get on my nerves, much like Rock Band's release of "Last Resort", didn't bother me... although I will say that the version they released was a "rawer" version of the song. So with that in mind it's a hard and tricky thing when it comes to translate or not, but I'm of the preference that at least in the show portions to translated everything, including the songs, as with Steam Detective I didn't like what they did. |

it is ok to translate a song into different languages. but the sad thing is, sometimes the songs are not translated very well, and some misunderstood the meaning of the song.

Like someone here said, it really depends. Although, with all honesty, I have heard very few good English translations of OP/ED songs. On the other hand, I've see some old shows in German, and I thought the OPs they did for, for example Ranma 1/2 and Inuyasha were brilliant.

I vote for original version
I think the language as a part of the 'art of music'. So far I haven't seen any anime with nice dubbed song, maybe i'll try beck. |
