Believe it or not, there is a clear and concise method behind all the madness. It is SO much more than some cool animation and a crazy character, and after the third time watching it, it hit me like a sack of bricks.
To put it very simply, it's a coming-of-age story. Let us discuss the different levels of maturity and "manliness" in Naota's life, what exactly Mamimi is trying to burn down, and the significance of the iron and the hand. GO FORTH AND MAKE SOMETHING OF THIS CREATION OF AWESOME! By the way, I wonder if I could write a book about the deep mysteries of FLCL.... EDIT: OH YES. and SPOILERSPOILERSPOILER. It's probably best if you've seen the anime at least once all the way through. And I should probably start with a topic. What is the significance of Naota's brother playing baseball in the United States? We could probably incorporate Medical Mechanica into this, and Mamimi's relationship with him compared to Naota. |

A lot of it is silly fun times with a great soundtrack...but I'm sure there's some meaning in there. It's been a while, but one of the things I got out of it was about enjoying your childhood and not growing up too fast. Noata wanted to be all mature and whatnot, and Haruko was silly and fun, so she was kinda making him embrace his childhood...or something?

FLCL is actually quite deep for something only six episodes long. I liked all the symbolism and metaphors it uses. And the two Manga sequences are priceless. Talk about pushing the boundaries.
A brilliant Anime; anything that pulls off a response-parody of South Park deserves to be given a medal. As for what it means, it isn't just a coming-of-age story. It is also a warning against conformity, a parody of the crazy goings-on that so often crop up in Anime, coming to terms with the feelings for a crush, the pain of living in another's shadow, a lesson that money doesn't always buy you happiness, and much more. Oh, and it confirms the "facts" that Anime fathers are crazy (grandfathers even more so) and that alien females are very hot and very insane. Ha ha ha. |

FLCL was somewhat random to me, but it also has its moments. Definitely a coming of age story, and pretty funny. Something I would love to watch again if it wasn't my friend's FLCL that I was watching.

Well if we look at Naota's brother compared Naota himself, the importance is that his brother is an athlete, and a pretty good one. One that overshadows him. When you take his relationship with Mamimi it's one-sided and even she doesn't call Naota by his name seeing him either as Takun or Takun's brother. Which is spoiler[why she left him when he stood up for himself.] As to Medical Mechanica in this it's kind of there for an antagonist/police organization purposes, like a customs or M.I.B. kinda set-up. One should look at Armuro as a focus as both he and Naota have a relationship with Haruko(sp?) Last edited by LordRedhand on Wed Mar 11, 2009 7:53 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Brother: The brother was his idol that Naota looked up to (and was jealous of). Now that he's gone he feels that he has to fill his place. spoiler[that's why he puts up with Mamimi and joins his brother's old baseball team.] Medical Mechanica: It seems to take on new meanings (as do other things) depending on the episode. Most of the time it seems to represent a wall that is in Naota's way of his goals. Mamimi and Naota's brother: spoiler[As we saw in episode 1 2 and 5, Mamimi was and still is very dependent on Naota's brother. She said that He saved her from the school fire and that's when they met. Ever since then she has always loved him.] Of course we see that Naota is jelous of his brother because of this fact and it leads to him becoming quite frustrated. |

I don't think you can really explain the hidden details that are present in the story and the reason for them.
I think it's all about growing up, it's a collection of life-lessons and self-discovery that stem from an unforgettable fun part of his life. In the beginning Naota was consumed with the belief that his life was mundane and even when the world was turning to hell he's still convinced that the town is "boring" and that the mist is an "omen" foreshadowing an area that sucks the life out of you. In the end, I think he learns to enjoy life a little bit more and move on. I also believe that its more important to ponder on how you-the viewer- is supposed to react to the situations then on how the characters in the story respond, because they are so wrapped up in themselves that it's hard to understand exactly what is causing thier extreme depression. |

It looks like an okay anime but the one thing I really can't seem to grasp is why the people behind the dub decided to keep the Japanese naming order intact instead of flipping the naming order to fit the language. To me, doing that is just inexcusable unless you're wanting to pander to a handful of the niche crowd that it's aimed for. For me, it just becomes too much of a distraction to enjoy the actual content of the series and for that, it just ruins it for me. Maybe my opinion of the series could change if I watched it in Japanese but as far as the dub, because some douchebag thought it would be cool for the dub to refer to her as Haruhara Haruko instead of Haruko Haruhara just makes it unwatchable.

I had to watch the series two times to try to understand it. For me, I think it is a story about rebelling against the system of normalcy. Naota lives in a boring town with a boring life, until Haruka and Kanti come around and flip his world upside down. In the end I think Naota learns that its ok to be different. At least that what I got.

Good grief, does the order of the names really make the whole show unwatchable? What a childish attitude. |

...you have no soul. And to anyone at all that feels that FLCL has "no meaning," rewatch it. And again. And again. By the fourth or fifth time around, everything should start becoming clear. Or, if that's not your thing, go here and save yourself some time. ![]() |

Though saying it has no meaning whatsoever would be doing the show a discredit, I cannot say that this show left a forceful or pertinent impression upon me. As such, I've no desire to rewatch it: That which would be gained by me doing such would only be additional intellectual insight into the show, as opposed to any additional entertainment. |

The anime is great, it's really many things. It's a creative exercise for Gainax where they can fool around and break all the rules and still mange to impress us with their animation, characters and ideas.
