if you happen to be a subscriber it may be streamed in either 480p or 720p or both so as a subscriber doubt the quality will be a streaming issue.
but then again unless your computer has a 8800 GTX card or a high end Radeon it wouldn't make a difference how good the stream is.
and even worse is having the good GPU and a second rate monitor lol!

Not quite sure what GPUs have to do with streaming media. Only recent CUDA/UVD-enabled cards and specialised decoders can offload h.264 decoding to the GPU, otherwise it's all CPU based. And flash's h.264 implementation is not GPU accelerated. Not to mention that anything faster than an exceptionally slow PIII can decode h.264 just fine.
But that's moot. Crunchyroll's abysmal bitrates, even for subscribers, means that the quality of their 480p/720p streams is terrible.

480p? Isn't that what most people watched it in originally anyway? Is this another bash Crunchyroll thread?

I think this is very cool, though I find Makoto Shinkai's works to be exceptionally boring. They sure are pretty, though.

I have to ask here, does it really matter about the quality considering it is "free"?

Yes, that's a huge reason why people download high quality fansubs instead of watching it streamed.

There's more to video than just the pixel count. Bitrate and encoding (and to a lesser extent for consumer playback, colourspace & BPP) are also vital.

Yay~!! I've been having fun watching all crunchyroll's official stuff, and because I've been hearing all the buzz about Makoto Shinkai's stuff it's fantastic to finally be able to see them!! I just hope I'm not too busy. ^-^

It's free. If people can watch fansub anime on Youtube without complaining why are people complaining about Crunchyroll's video quality? If they are asked to pay for anime...

Is this for "members" or for "PAYING members"? I'd love to see 5cm per second again. The other two I never saw, so I'm curious about those too.

So even if you've seen 5cm before, be sure to check out the brand spanking-new English dub!

Cheers,

EHHHH?! Shocked

Why did CoMix create a new English dub? Wasn't ADV's dub good enough anyways?

I was reading a few articles on this movie and its author a month ago and read that it was out of print(being an ADV vid); however, i didn't think it was hard to find still, was i ever wrong. I checked out Amazon and Ebay and its going for $45.00. I found it to be a well done heart tugging movie and well worth the $25 i purchased it for.
If you enjoyed 5 Centimeters then you might find these two articles interesting.

your talking acceleration which was not what I meant since virtually everything that reaches your monitor has to be processed by your GPU and a crappy GPU will give you crappy results regardless of CPU or GPU processing the media initially.

sounds more like you want to bash CR more than anything else since streams at 720p are very sharp and clear here so either you have a pathetic ISP or your in a region that gets limited quality from CR streams either of which does not mean the norm.

are people whining about stream quality again? If you’re going to get it for free, don't complain. If you’re paying, fine. But I personally find the quality to be acceptable enough (at least as good as most fansubs I've watched). I just get mad that it wont go full screen without freezing :/ That's my only beef with crunchyroll. That and the obnoxious ads that beep. I don't mind ads, but ads that beep when you’re trying to watch something are really annoying.

Hi All,

Here are our official clarifications:

1) Access is from 5:00PM (Pacific Standard Time) on the 28th to 5:00PM (Pacific Standard Time) on the 29th of February worldwide outside of Japan.

2) Whether you are an anime member, a free member, or not even a member, you can access the videos outside of Japan.

3) Anyone can access the videos in 480P high definition regardless of their membership level.

4) 5cm Per Second has two language tracks: English (new dub) and Japanese original audio.

Regarding the all-new dub, CoMix Wave Films elected to create a new dub to be more true to the original Japanese. This was not an issue of quality of the acting from the ADV Films version, but rather a translation/presentation issue. CoMix Wave Films is looking forward to people's feedback on it.

Cheers,

Rob
