Okay, I originally borrowed this show for use in my book club thread, I've gotten a new paycheck, and it's next on my wishlist.

(I'm frugal and I have a LONG wishlist, yes. I put it on there right after I first watched it, and it's just now "come up next.")

So I finally roll around to buying it...

Well, crap.

Which one?

I can't seem to find any info on whether or not there's any discrepancy in these releases. Is it JUST a re-release or was the first one stripped of extras, what? Should I just wait? Will the price go down on the first release if I give it a few weeks after the second boxset comes out?

It's probably not a real big deal, but I hate buying things twice. For what it's worth, I greatly prefer the box art on the original release.

ADV has been re-re-releasing a bunch of their shows lately, and from my understanding they're exactly the same as the previous box sets, just different box art. I'm pretty sure that's the case here as well.

Both are extraless I think. Kino's Journey didn't have much in the way of extras anyway though, so I'd just go with the first one.

You could always just get the singles + the artbox. You can usually find them pretty cheap (rightstuf has all four in its bargain bin, and you can get the artbox(vol 1) on amazon for $7.38). It'll cost about the same as the thinpak even if you get expedited shipping.

It's still quite cheap in this edition, I don't know if that includes extras, but apparently they aren't really that great according to the other posters above me (and TBH, since most extras on anime DVDs are skimpy at best I don't buy my stuff for the extras Razz)

You can count on ADV digging into their old license archives and rereleasing a lot of stuff being as they really need the cashflow-not to mention knocking the legs out from all those ripoff artists on ebay asking 200 bucks for Battle Angel Alita or the originial Catgirl Nuku Nuku ova series.
