You've pretty much nailed it right on the head: Pumpkin Scissors ends right as when looks as though it's about to get really good. Everything's set up for it, but then they ran out of episodes, I guess. It was a real let-down.

Is this based off of a manga that continues further? I may want to read it.

Though I can't say I have an interest in the series, what I'm more curious about is why FUNi has handled their releases so poorly lately -- I think it would behoove them to switch to half-season sets entirely, because the delays between their single volumes sound like they have been ridiculous (though I've watched neither series yet, there seem to be inordinate amounts of waiting times between Claymore and Darker Than Black DVDs, and of the two, I was most interested in Claymore and was planning to wait on the complete collection, but Lord knows when THAT will be out). It's times like this when I wish Lance could give us some kind of indication as to the release screw-ups, though I don't know if he's allowed to reveal the corporate workings of how and why these things happen.

Agreed. This was one of those series (another that comes to mind is Amatsuki) that seems to be begging for at least another 12 episodes, because otherwise what was all that leading up to? It's rather frustrating (in my opinion), although I understand that it's probably assumed that anyone wanting to follow the story further can pick up the manga.

Not sure what you're talking about here. Claymore had nine weeks between its first two volumes and has only seven weeks scheduled between vols. 2/3 and 3/4. Darker than BLACK is also running 7-8 week gaps on its releases. That's very typical for individual volume releases.

The attempt to go straight to a set when the show had one volume left is certainly odd. The reaction was exactly what Funimation should have expected, lots of upset people posting messages and sending them emails. I also am very curious why the individual volumes would be delayed when the discs are already being made for the set anyway. The only thing that wouldn't be made already would be the cases.

IIRC, Funimation HAD to release Claymore in volumes in order for the license deal to happen. Not sure about Darker than Black or Baccano (not that I mind, since I've got the artboxes, and they're SWEET!).

I personally thought the whole show was boring throughout by repeating the same ideas and never really getting inventive with the world. It could have been much better but lazy writing can really destroy a world. The finale especially would a letdown but I wasn't particularly surprised.

It's nothing new that an anime adaptation would pick a certain spot in the manga as its own closing, especially if the manga is still long-running. But like Theron said, it really felt like the series directors didn't plan it the whole way through and really stretched out the climactic finale when it could've been summed up in just two episodes. So it surprised me in a disappointing way, but I guess it's all the more reason why I should read the manga since it would continue where the anime left off. For all its good aspects, I really liked the concepts and the characters, and Alice especially, there really aren't too many genuinely strong heroines in anime like her, so the could've-been-better anime ending didn't turn me completely off from wanting to find out what happens next. I nearly didn't want to read the 'Alien Nine' manga because of how much I hated the anime, and was surprised with how much I liked it when I did.

It shouldn't be all that surprising. This is a Gonzo production, remember, and HEAVEN FORBID them from going past 24 or 26 episodes to continue with the manga. Trinity Blood's ending really annoyed me as well. They left it on a cliffhanger, probably never to return to do a sequal, while the manga is still rolling along.

They've recently done it with Special A, the manga of which I adore. The manga is still going, but Gonzo just left it at 24 eps. (I do still hope the anime gets licensed, though.)

Uh... didn't the manga's author die and leave the manga unfinished?

And Gonzo's not the only studio to do that; take Fruits Basket as one of many, many examples. It's expensive to a long-running, ongoing series unless you're sure it'll have an audience, and you're liable to catch up with the manga and be forced to restort to filler if you take that route (think Naruto, Inuyasha, Bleach, One Piece, Dragon Ball and its many variations). And while it might be great to wait until the manga is finished, then you're up against the worry that people will be less interested in the anime, what with the manga being over. In terms of marketing, sometimes doing a short "read-the-manga-if-you-want-to-know-the-rest" series isn't always a bad idea. Pumpkin Scissors just picked an awful place to end - though I'd rather have that than something the terrible anime-original ending to Chrono Crusade.

what I don't get is that Funi released a single to complete what ADV started with Kanon, so what was keeping them from doing the same thing with Pumpkin Scissors???

Damn, I actually started watching this series a couple weeks ago and just got to the part where the conspiracies and what not are coming out. That's too bad it fails to impress with its ending.
Bumped down on priority list...

The original creator and author of the novels died. The manga is by a different author based on the novels and it's still going.

Yes, but Fruits Basket had a good ending. There wasn't any giant cliffhanger or allusion to a possible sequal that will likely never come (ie: the opposite of what Gonzo usually does). At the same time, they can easily pick up Fruits Basket right where they left off (which is still the opposite of Gonzo, for, as you pointed out, they sometimes create their own endings).
