Hi there. I have a super dumb question. My sis wants to own the Ichigo Marshmallow OVA's because she already owns the series and love Love LOVES it. And I want to surprize her with finding it for her. But where should I try. It would have to be all region w/English subs. Any ideas. Sorry to ask this, but I hope somebody can help. I've looked on Ebay and Ioffer, but nothing. Do I wait till they get liscenced? And what if they are going to get liscenced? How should I try then?

Well, the Japanese release has only been advertised within the past week. The problem with the show getting licensed is that Geneon licensed the original series, and they are no longer in business. So now the OVA being licensed will be up in the air. Who will get it? Who will be willing to spend the money to acquire the license, especially in this day and age when the economy currently is in a state of low incomes, panic on the stock market, and loss of jobs. It will be hard to tell.
So you might have to wait on it for a while. And unfortunately there's no telling how long it might take, but ANN will surely be on top of it. But I definitely would not look on Ebay, because there will be bootlegs on there. Right now you'll just have to wait until it gets licensed. But a good place to look when it does though, is Rightstuf International. |

Yes, that would be for the original TV series. But the OVA is the one that is just coming out, and probably won't be seen in North America soon. |

Geneon licensed odd titles in their time, and this was definitely one of them. I can't see any other licensor picking it up aside from possibly Media Blasters and even then I would say it's unlikely.

That's why I loved Geneon.
Now with them gone I'll probably never see Manabi Straight, Kaiba, or Mononoke R1 DVDs. |

I'm thinking that the OP is talking about the first OVA series, not the "encore" that recently started coming out.
anime#6684 I wouldn't hold your breath waiting on an R1 license, as the Strawberry Marshmallow TV series doesn't seem to have been particularly lucrative for Geneon. Any DVDs you find out there with English subtitles are likely to be bootlegs. And what's so wrong with the "Strawberry Marshmallow" title for this series, anyway? |

For the thousandth time people Geneon is NOT out of business. They license, dub, and publish dvds.
The only thing they no longer do is physically manufacturer their own discs, they now outsource that to Funimation. So once again. Geneon is NOT out of business. Do the most basic research before posting blatantly wrong information please. |

Yes, yes, we got it- but please understand: they aren't putting their logos on the new titles hitting the shelves, or the liscense annoucements- Funi does that. Save for the rescued shows, their catalog is out of print and only available secondhand. They might as well be out of business for all the presence they have in the current market- which, by the way, is 'the most basic research'. Case in point- the recent announcement that laserdiscs players would no longer be manufactured. Everyone I've told that too reacted the same way- "you mean they were still making those?" why should they think otherwise- you can't buy one at Wal-mart or Best Buy, let alone the LDs themselves. Anyway, on-topic... the OVA stands a slightly better chance of getting liscensed since the TV series is out. Lucrative or not, it has an established fanbase, and that matters in the play-it-safe market we currently have. However- since you could techincally call it a moe titles without fanservice, it doesn't have a lot of selling power outside of the established title angle. In short- don't hold your breath. But I don't reccomend buying a bootleg, either- the quality is usually so bad you'll feel like you wasted your money, even if it's the only DVD available. |

Actually their logos are on the new titles hitting shelves. I got 4 boxsets from them they released in the last 6 months and all have the big Geneon logo, and a small little distributed by funimation logo. All they really did is consolidate their portfolio and decide to focus on the shows that are making them money, if we count their titles their are probably more unique shows they are producing then ADV which takes the exact opposite approach and constantly reprints their shows over and over again for no reason. |

I could be wrong on that, since I only had web photos to go on- the titles that weren't cut off mid-release and rescued (like Karin and Shonen Onmyouji) don't have any logo art on the online shop photos. Which goes back to my whole point- without any presence, people will continue to assume they're dead and gone, unless they start putting out DVDs themselves again (or at least until they have reps at cons again.) |

I need to check with a mod to see if i can make a thread on this. Physically manufacturing a dvd doesn't really mean anything. I mean no one buys funimation titles because they burn dvds really well and ship them to stores in a great way. They buy it based on the quality of work that the studio does which Geneon DOES do. The only thing Geneon has outsourced is the physical manufacturing and distribution of the discs which is a smart move. Let me send one of them a PM, i don't want to get off topic here. |

WOW. I didn't think I'de get any hits at all. THANK YOU. I was actually looking for the OVA's before Encore. According to wikipedia, they were:
Episodes 3 Released February 23, 2007 - April 25, 2007 Runtime 25 minutes each Encore started: January 23, 2009 - scheduled BUT THIS IS NOT THE ONE I'M LOOKING FOR. I know since its barely coming out, it'll take a while. I'm just surprized they haven't offered selling it in those imports box sets. I usualy buy those. It's cheaper and better than waiting for the series to get liscenced. Then release the box set collection which is usually expensive. Oh well. I guess I do have to wait. Unless anybody know anything else. I do appreciate it. Thank you very much and all of you, have a great day. |

Yeah, those are bootlegs, and they're not better than anything. Just download off a torrent site if you don't want to pay retail. It's free, and you know what kind of subs you're getting without wasting money.
Oh, and you're not supporting organized crime, or whatever. |

Sorry, that doesn't have anything to do with the OP's question really does it? If you want English anything, you're only hope is bootlegs or fansubs, unless the R2s have some features I'm not aware of. Sadly, we'll probably never see any more of Strawberry Marshmallow licensed unless Geneon does it or Funimation grows even more and decides to do something else that makes me worship them. In other words, if you are looking for an official release that isn't from the Japanese, for right now you can't get that. If you want to see a future release, I'd suggest contacting the R1 companies most likely to put out something like Strawberry Marshmallow. While I doubt most of them actually pay any attention to fans anymore, it couldn't hurt and doesn't take much effort. |
