Wow, I have to say I was not expecting this to be reviewed here. As far as her voice goes, which was addressed a lot in this, it's a matter of preference. Most of my non-Halko fan friends like her lower voice more (as I think a lot of "normal" people do). I'm weird and masochistic hence my preference for her higher voice and UNDER17 (where her higher voice was much more prevalent). As far as this album goes, it was good but not her best. Halko does better at original songs than doing covers IMO.

Halko Momoi singing "Give a Reason" and "Invoke"?
I've got to get this now!

While I love the Gamble Rumble, I couldn't really swallow her version. Her voice is far to high pitched for my liking and it just gave the song the wrong feeling.

Quote: | The opening theme for Initial D: Third Stage, “Gamble Rumble” by m.o.v.e., speeds into second place. Once again, Momoi's vocals are higher-pitched compared to Yuri's, though motsu's rap is still used. |
Hmmm, Halko covering a song by m.o.v.e.? Strange coincidence: Both artists were guest stars in 2007 at the german anime convention "connichi" in Kassel and had live performances (not together). Maybe the initial idea for a cover song started there.

As big of a fan as I am I wasn't even aware of this. Tough I do think her voice would have worked well in something like a cover of the stawberry marshmallow opening and not some of these.

I'm amazed to see people actually liking this screeching harpy's voice. I've hated her so-called "style" ever since Under17, and she still sounds as terrible as ever. How she's making money is beyo--oh, right. Otaku. MOE MOE MOE.

Loved both CDs with a passion. I personally liked her Famison 8-bit CDs more, but in all honesty, I could listen to her read a phone book and be completely entertained.
Her high voice is adorable. I actually prefer it. And I wouldn't even describe it as 'high' and 'low'. She's pretty versatile in all ranges.
Keep singing! All hail the goddess of Akihabara!

I didn't know about this until this review... and I love Momoi.

Err... she doesn't always sing that way. And sometimes, like with covers, it's awesome to hear a reinterpretation.
I think that this review was too harsh on her, actually. One of the biggest elements of this album is that it's a cover album. It's for people who want to hear new versions of these songs, and especially people who want to hear MOMOI versions. Considering that aspect, it was a huge success.
If you're not already a fan of Momoi or the voice she's usually known for singing in (the high pitched one)... then it's easy to find things you don't like about the album.

I'm actually not a fan of her 8-bit CDs... I love Momoi and and love anison covers, but I don't really like 8-bit music, and most of the songs she chose were obscure to me. (But the kind of stuff most adults have probably seen in Japan.)

Just placed my order.
I liked her 8-bit CD's. I'll admit it took me a while to get used to the sound, but the more I listen to them the more I love them. The fact that most of them were pretty obscure didn't bother me – in fact, it took me quite a while to figure out that they were actually pre-existing songs.
Hahah, I would expect there to be people who don't like Momoi's high-pitched voice. While I'll admit that there are some songs where she goes a little too far even for me, most of the time her voice sounds cute, and she usually tunes it so that it fits right in with the backtrack.

I agree. I prefer her higher pitch, although her lower voice in Wonder Momo-i and even her cover of Tough Boy still gets me through the day. I think that's what makes her so awesome. Her vocal range is versatile enough to avoid blandness, without compromising her UNDER17 denpa roots. I'm definitely sold on both albums!
I wonder if paranda posted these albums in his blog. I check his blog every now and then and I don't recall ever seeing these albums there. This is the first time I've heard about these albums. Thanks, ANN!

I see what you mean - I was there myself that day but next year, after she performed at the Connichi *again* (but this time with band) I gained some background info: move and Halko are both artists by avex, the same label. Connichi's future artists will also be avex artists, as they have a kind of promotional deal. Late night at the con I met & spoke to Brian, the pr-manager for avex European Market (very cool guy) In a funny drink-session of the leftover con-workers tried to convince him to bring the "bigger" artists over, haha Hillarious night, really.
So because Avex owns the rights to both move and Halko songs, it's very simple to cover songs without paying extra licensing fees
Back to Halko: I personally like her complete range just as much - the squeeky voice just belongs to her, as painful as it can sound. It took time to get used to it, but after seeing a really fine live performance on youtube I got attached - and after *really* seeing her live, twice, I must say she's a really fine performer and entertainer with lots of energy, especially with live band. She reminded me that a good performance doesn't neccesarly need perfect vocals. ^^

There is almost a strange and creepy irony to Halko singing "Ai Oboeteimasuka" from Macross. Can't really place what that is, but I definitely want to hear it.

Well, the'yre both Avex artists, I knew so far as I was assigned as volunteer support staff/translator for m.o.v.e. in 2007. The thing is, although both artists are from the same label, they still were sort of competing against one another for getting the best and longest stage time, as far as I got the impression. So I'm glad to read that Halko's covering a song by m.o.v.e, even if that may have nothing to do with their initial meeting at Connichi 07 in the end. It softens my impression of rivalry I sensed among both.
Btw, I agree that Brian is a cool guy. I wish I'd participated last year too as supporting staff but had my final exams for my university degree.

I prefer her lower voice actually.
Her God Knows cover was interesting too. Actually she sounded better live than aya hirano. But the whole OTAKU MOE MOE! Thing is a bit off putting to me too sometimes. It's like I have to pretend that the annoying possessive 2 ch posters aren't fanboying somewhere.
But um has anyone heard her cover of Video Killed The Radio Star?...All in english. Why Halko why?

:: Oh yes.. I did.. live, even. But it was so far into the concert, that I didn't mind. But looking back it was maybe the rock bottom of the concert in terms of quality And I'd cringe at the thought of hearing it casually in studio-version. IYAA!!
