OK, we all know how OVERexposed giant robots (much as I love 'em) and the moe genre are, as an example, but there's also anime genres I feel deserve more attention, and more series.
Though it has some recent additions to it (Ghost Hunt, D. Gray Man or whatever, and Le Chevalier D'Eon), I think the supernatural/paranormal genre needs a boost. There simply aren't enough of these types of series out there, and even Hellsing has people divided, opinion-wise. |

Zombies. Anime needs more zombies. And when I say zombies, I don't mean super-powered technically dead people like in Zombie Loan or Shikabane Hime; I mean the kind of zombies that shamble along making gutteral noises, like in Highschool of the Dead. The Japanese seem to be able to do supernatural horror pretty well, so why not give a little more attention to a zombie apocalypse scenario?

They do a pretty good job of it in video games-- Capcom (the folks behind Resident Evil) is Japanese. But yeah, there is definitely an awkward lack of it in anime. I personally want to see some anime musicals. I love musicals as a genre. Why not animated? Even something that is like some of those older Disney animated movies where it isn't a musical per se, but still a lot of songs. Robin Hood is an example where there are a lot of great songs, and they interact with the story in an important way, but the movie isn't a musical.C'mon guys, make it happen..... |

...I'm not sure if the image of Cats, Little Shop of Horrors, and Phantom of the Opera as anime is either awesome or disturbing.

I don't think I'm thinking of anime versions of existing musicals. Although I suppose the right one done well could be interesting. I was more thinking originals that take cues from the musical genre. |

What about josei titles? These are titles aimed at young women focused on young adult characters thinking of what to do with their futures. Sure, the few that have been out like Paradise Kiss, Nana, and Honey and Clover have a great fan following. But, I haven't seen very many other titles of the genre made into anime.

I would like more paranormal/horror. Heck, I'm growing fond of that scene but I still get (too) freaked out at live action
![]() I like dark comedy, or whatever you call it. I think that would be nice to see more of that, or satire. ._. |

I agree, with both the horror statement and the dark comedy one. I think that, although there is a good amount of horror out there, it doesn't get the attention that it deserves. I mean, when was the last successful anime horror (not counting that awful Dead Space movie)? Paranoia Agent maybe? I think we need more horror anime to become big. Now that I think about it, I think that the next shot for this will be Higurashi, we need more people to go buy Higurashi DVDs! I would also like to see dark comedy to become a bigger genre. It doesn't seem to be on the radar of most fans. A well done dark comedy can be some of the best work out there. I think that Satoshi Kon has done good work with this genre so far. But there needs to be more. |

Agreed. Definitely, Anime is missing dark humor...yeah, the sort of thing you watch and are suppose to gasp and cry, "Oh my god! That's horrible!" but instead you laugh and realize you're going to hell.
Like Dai Mahou Touge, for instance. Last edited by foxnewsnetwork on Tue Jan 13, 2009 8:23 pm; edited 1 time in total |

A show I find needs more exposure is " The Wings of Honneamise ", this movie could be a little slow for some, but the characters are excellent and the story is amazing. It's mostly dialogue but most people wouldn't mind that. LOVE IT!!@!

As a major fantasy fan, I wish it would get more exposure in anime. I mean, I enjoy sci-fi and the like, but give me wide open fields and forests, swords and bows/arrows, and an epic quest any day.
![]() Plus, I've always said Wheel of Time would make an awesome anime adaptation (if they omitted the pointless focus on tons of minor characters the latter books love to do). I mean, certain characters like Mat and Nynaeve just scream "anime" charcters. A Song of Ice and Fire could work too, though I would have preferred seeing what HBO could've done with it (but that got canned, so......yeah). I know these will never happen, but nothing wrong with wishful thinking, right? |

Needs more Vampires.
And by vampires I am certainly not talking about whats popular in vampire fiction today. I mean a good old horror story about evil vampires who are evil and vindicative and kill people without a thought, hatch awsomely wicked schemes, and are very conniving and manipulative. In short, lets see some vampires as classic villains instead of this Vampire Knight quasi romance erotica teen flick melodramatic crap. (and heaven forbid I dont want an anime version of Twilight) Also not really talking about a Hellsing gore and action fest.... Im more meaning traditional vampires. Suave and seductive, but ruthless and cunning. Vampires ala Dracula. And good lord please no more good vampire who is all angsty and self conlifcted because he's a vampire, but good, dontchaknow, and oh woe is him. Iv made a point to see every anime ever made that deals with vampires, and Iv yet to see one that satisfies my notion of how vampires should be treated. (Although I really do like Hellsing, but not for my vampires fix) Last edited by Eruanna on Tue Jan 13, 2009 9:51 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Really, this genre is so neglected. In my collection, I have: Escaflowne, Magic Knight Rayearth, Scrapped Princess, Rune Soldier, Lodoss, and really, that's about it. I really wish I could say there were more well-known fantasy-style anime, but lo, it ain't that way. |

This. Vampires weren't my favorite horror characters, but with the exception of Hellsing, I hate most modern vampire stories and cannot help but roll my eyes. I should probably go and read the original Dracula novel to at least somewhat redeem my opinion of vampires. I would also like to see more historical series that aren't set in Japan. I will admit that I cannot get enough of Shinsengumi fiction, but honestly, I am sure that there are so many stories outside of Japan (though I admit that I am particularly interested in seeing more European history) that could make fascinating anime and manga series, like, say, the legend of Anastasia, the American Revolution (as well as other revolutions), or, hell, even Napoleon. |

One thing I would like to see is the type of idea which will either be a great success or it will crash and burn in a fiery wreck with 2 dead and 2 in critical condition being rushed to the hospital. (They didn't make it.) Literary adaptatations have promise if chosen carefully. I think an OVA "Faust" or Coleridge's "Christabel" could work out really well.
And Eruanna is absolutely right about Vampires. What in the world have we done to them? They went from being powerful entities unto themselves with their Jedi mind tricks and meticulous planning to becoming dime a dozen "dudes with fangs". I guess I'm just old fashioned. |
